It is composed of over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands stretching for over 2,300 kilometres over an area of approximately 344,400 km2. It is larger than the Great Wall of China and can be seen from outer space, because it is the world's biggest single structure made by living organisms. The reef is located in the Coral Sea, off the coast of Queensland, Australia, separated from the coast by a channel 100 miles wide in places and over 200 feet deep. This reef structure is composed of and built by billions of tiny organisms, known as coral polyps. The symposium was largely a snapshot of the Australian government’s Reef Restoration and Adaptation Program, but as that program enters the first phase of a transition to deployment, we took the opportunity to present the @reef_restoration_foundation Resilience & Recovery program. Our program is designed to produce billions of additional coral larvae every year. NOAA has recently declared a global mass bleaching event, a consequence of warming oceans stressing coral reefs. I witnessed this firsthand weeks ago when I visited reefs near the Great Barrier Reef; compared to seven years ago, they’re now significantly impacted, with many reefs dying or already dead. The photos I took reveal the bleaching and deteriorating coral, a result of our collective inaction towards rising global temperatures. Coral bleaching occurs when heat stress prompts corals to expel vital algae, leading to their eventual death. Coral reefs play a crucial role in the ecosystem, providing habitats, breeding grounds, and feeding areas for marine life. Yet, there’s still hope if we act promptly. Taking steps like using public transportation, conserving energy, and adopting a plant-based diet can make a difference. On Saturday, I was invited to attend the Savannah Sounds on the Reef, a special music concert performed on the Reef Magic floating pontoon at Moore Reef, 30 kilometres off the coast of Cairns. Kairos Kin, Max Jackson, Lee Kernaghan and Sheppard all performed to an enthusiastic crowd. It was the first time a concert has been performed on the outer reef. Event organisers invited 100 local heroes from Far North Queensland and across the country for an all expenses paid music experience. Participants went snorkelling and viewed the reef from glass bottom boats in the morning, before the concert started at midday. It certainly was unique experience to listen to top musicians with the Great Barrier Reef as the backdrop. Last few days have been amongst the toughest of my Senate career I reckon. Strange, considering I was visiting a tropical island in paradise. I came to the southern #greatbarrierreef to bear witness to the devastating impacts of what will surely be the biggest mass coral bleaching event in our history (there have been 7 events since 1998 when it was first ever recorded on the Great Barrier Reef). It’s haunting and confronting swimming over fresh coral graveyards, especially when you have spent so much of your life campaigning to raise awareness on the changes in our oceans and the urgent need to act on #climatechange So much for me to process right now, but I woke up this morning - after listening to the sounds of coal trains all night (burning such fossil fuels is killing the reef) - angry, really angry, and more determined than ever to take the fight to the greedy #fossilfuel industry and the government’s they have corrupted.
