. Since the theme for this week seems to be "projects," let's talk about this one, shall we? This particular piece was intended to be the very much more upscale alternative to its utilitarian companion that I featured in last Tuesday's post. But, like Von Clausewitz said, "No battle plan survives its first encounter with lapping compound and an 8 ounce hammer..." The basic pistol featured previously ended up being not so basic after all, so this one will eventually need to be "over the top" in comparison. In my mind, that means we're probably looking at a bit of engraving, a genuine Bo-Mar rear sight, an ivory bead front, a National Match bushing and Kart barrel setup, miscellaneous parts from @108performance, some Harrison bits, and likely a Chen magwell. I also think she'll get a retro style abbreviated grip safety and a ring hammer. Nitre blued screws and pins are absolutely a must, as are top serrations and frontstrap checkering. Not sure if I want to trim the heffalump stocks to fit, but I just might. In hindsight, I probably should have just stuck with the ball cuts at the dust cover, and shunned the front cocking serrations. Perhaps we'll do a second fitted slide without them. Regardless of the selected options, my biggest enemy is time. This particular project has sat, languishing in its case, for eleven years. . Getting ready for the upcoming festivities at the in-laws later this week. Preparations may or may not include listening to copious amounts of CNN, MSNBC, and even FOX, for the next 48 hours. This self-inflicted torture is so I can inoculate myself against some of the bullshit I'm likely to hear at the dinner table. Speaking of inoculations, I'm pre-loading on alcohol now. This is also intended to help me tolerate some of the judgemental statements I'm sure my sister-in-law will have regarding my kids and our family in general. I've oiled and waxed up the Combat Government, because the SIL is also pretty sure either terrorists or dope dealers have moved into the property on the adjacent five acres, and you just never know when things might get sporty... . They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Well, that a good thing, because IG sure won't let you type that many... 😉 So, I went to see my therapist this afternoon, and I took the Series 80 Combat Government Model with me. Lessons learned today: 1) Just because a pistol passes the "pencil test," doesn't mean it's reliable enough for carry. 2) The frontstrap on Pachmayr GM-45 is absolutely a hindrance to a proper rip and rack failure drill. The checkered rubber frontstrap blocks the fingers of the support hand from "ripping" a magazine from the frame. It's getting cut off tomorrow morning. 3) Forty year old extractors have probably been put through the wringer, and either the hook may be chipped, or there's a strong possibility that it just hasn't maintained proper tension over the decades. 4) A failure to extract is less worrisome if you put the first shot right through your assailat's privates... I'll be going over the Series 80 with a fine-toothed comb tomorrow, and will report back forthwith. On a positive note, this thing is precise as Hell. Two five shot groups, two-handed, from the bench. Now, go look up the difference between accurate and precise. 🎯 I may have been pushing it to the left a bit, and the trigger pull could certainly use some work, but I don't want to be seen as making excuses. When I did my part, and kept the sights centered, she basically put every shot into the same f'ing hole. Colt's knew what they were doing when they developed that collet bushing for the Series 70. (This 1983 model is a holdover) If only they'd done a better job educating their customers on proper takedown procedures at the time, that bushing might not have its undeserved reputation for fragility... . I know what you're thinking... Four posts in a row about the Series 80 Colt's Combat Government Model... The algorithm will not be pleased with this. Okay, okay, I get it... You're all tired of seeing this beautiful little time capsule, and you want variety again... Fine! This will be the last pic of the Colt's Combat Government Model for a while. I'll throw it in the rotation and get back to posting different pieces in a day or two... She's wearing different shoes today. I found an older pair of the Pachmayr GM-45C, with the thumb rest on both sides, languishing in a box of orphaned parts on a shelf. The medallions had tarnished in the box over time, and the black rubber had faded grey due to off-gassing over a period of potentially decades. Restoration wasn't difficult, though. Brasso on a Q-tip worked for the medallions. A low-gloss, viscous white "tire shine" product that one of my sons keeps in his detailing kit did the trick on the old rubber panels. The Pachs are glossy black again, but without that greasy Armor-All feel. (Whatever you do, DON'T use the clear tire gel, because that sh*t will never come off...) So I suppose the last question is this: cut the frontstrap off, or leave it alone for the sake of nostalgia? There's no right or wrong answer. Powerful and Accurate! I love the .45 ACP caliber.. The DGFM - FMAP pistol was made in Argentina under License. If I recall correctly... in 1927 Argentina bought for the Army 10.000 units of a Colt 1911 A1 pistol, called Modelo 1927, and with a special serial number range from 1 to 10.000 (that's not the usual for Colt). With the purchase of the pistol, Argentina also acquired the license to produce the Pistola Sistema Colt Modelo 1927. The fist units were manufactured in 1945. The inscription DGFM - FMAP means Dirección General de Fabricaciones Militares - Fábrica Militar de Armas Portátiles (General Directorate of Military Manufactures - Military Factory of Portable Weapons). It's not an authentic Hawaiian print from Paradise Lost, but the military style cotton twill shirt from the @JPetermanCo is similar enough to the khaki shirts that TM occasionally wore. While it's a bit thick for most tropical climates, we're finally moving into cooler weather here, so... . . . The Colt spent a significant portion of its existence at Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center, and while my FOIA request didn't indicate it was ever issued to a SEAL Team, it was possibly held in reserve if needed. (That's my story and I'm sticking to it... 😉) . . . All this pairs perfectly with the vintage style SeaQuartz from @MomentumWatch. . . .
