Police have arrested Assam Congress member, Reetam Singh, who worked as a War Room Coordinator, for allegedly uploading a doctored video of Union Minister Amit Shah and communal tweet. Police said he uploaded a fake video of Shah and made a divisive tweet. Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma took to X saying, ‘Assam police have arrested an individual named Sri Reetom Singh in connection with the fake video involving Honorable Home Minister Sri Amit Shah.’ Talking to GPlus, an official from Panbazaar police station said, "Singh's tweet could have caused trouble and he's been charged under section 153 A of the Indian Penal Code." Further investigation is under way. The case pertains to circulation of videos involving Shah, in which his statements on abolishing quota on religious grounds were allegedly misinterpreted to convey that he was for cancelling all reservations. He had delivered the speech in Telangana. What the BJP leader actually said, however, was that the BJP was committed to abolishing the quota for Muslims on religious grounds. In a public statement on X (formerly Twitter) tagging Assam director general of police GP Singh, Gogoi said, "I would like to inform that a nefarious person is running a fake account in my name in the Facebook. It would be highly appreciable if the police could identify the culprit and take necessary actions against the miscreant within the precincts of law." Police have apprehended two persons, including a minor, for their alleged role in the defacement of a poster depicting Lord Ram at Shankar Nagar in the Lalganesh area, on April 28. They were picked based on CCTV footage. The minor from Dhubri is aged 14 while the other suspect has been identified as Mohidul Haque, 18, who is from Mukalmua. The duo was working as labourers in Guwahati. While speaking to GPlus, an official from Fatasil Ambari police station said, "The accused did not paint on the poster only, but on other properties of the locality too. School (Right) of 125 Patharkandi, Karimganj, has sparked controversy. However, upon receiving the complaint, the matter was promptly addressed during scrutiny on April 27 at 11 AM in the presence of the General Observer and candidates/election agents. During the scrutiny, the polling team, along with the Presiding Officer, Nazrul Haque Tapadar, Librarian of Taltala High School, clarified that the video was captured during a mock poll. It was further explained that the Close Result Clear (CRC) process was conducted before the commencement of the actual polling, ensuring transparency and accuracy in the voting process. Additionally, statements from individuals visible in the shared video, including Abdul Sahid, son of Ajimuddin, from Chenjur, who serves as the polling agent of Abdul Hameed, an independent candidate, corroborated the explanation provided by the polling officials. According to the established procedure, polling agents are permitted to cast a few test votes in favor of their respective candidates during the mock poll phase. Locals gathered in protest in Shankar Nagar area in Lalganesh, Guwahati on April 28 after a poster with Lord Ram was found to be painted black. Residents of Fancy Bazar, the business hub of Guwahati that also caters to places in and around the city, have for long been grappling with many issues concerning their day-to-day lives. With no one actually addressing their issues, they are left with no shoulder to cry on. They are particularly angry with both the ruling BJP party and the Opposition Congress party for ignoring the area and leaving them to their fate or, in other words, ‘bhagwan bharose’. Day after day they have to confront traffic jams, poor drainage systems, woeful garbage collection, inadequate drinking water, and the unregulated and ever-mushrooming vending and parking chaos, among other inconveniences. A resident of Fancy Bazar, talking to GPlus said, “We were always seen as a BJP vote bank so when the Congress was in power, they neglected us”. He added that after the BJP came to power, the party’s leaders didn’t visit the area taking the residents for granted as they thought the residents would vote for the BJP. “We are left bhagwan bharose,” said the resident. GPlus conducted an in-depth investigation to uncover why residents in Silsako are uncertain or vowed not to cast their votes in the forthcoming Lok Sabha 2024 elections. During discussions with GPlus, many Silsako residents voiced concerns, alleging that a significant portion of those evicted during the initial phase had not received adequate compensation, though Article 14 could not independently verify this claim. Silsako Beel, governed by the 2008 Guwahati Waterbodies (Preservation and Conservation) Act, prohibits activities such as garbage dumping, earth-filling, and construction in notified areas. Violations are considered cognizable offences under the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973, punishable by imprisonment or fines. The land was historically utilised by tribal farmers, predominantly from the Karbi community, for rice cultivation. Over time, settlements of Assamese, Bengali, and other tribal communities like Mising, Bodo, Rabha, Dimasa, and Deori, emerged in the area. Successive governments allocated land for infrastructure projects, including road development, over nearly three decades. Before the 2008 Waterbodies Act, Silsako served as Guwahati's primary garbage dumping site. The current BJP state government alleges that 396 out of 595 acres of the wetland are encroached upon. Consequently, the administration has conducted multiple eviction-demolition drives, most recently in September 2023, citing efforts to mitigate flooding and preserve the area.
