It’s been a while since I’ve posted work really being made. Life’s been crazy, just as I’m sure it’s been for all of you as well. That’s not an excuse, just a reality. I recently applied to a studio management position and unfortunately did not get picked for the position. That was a pretty big blow to my confidence as well, so just trying to get back to my center making work that I love. Just trying to remind myself that it’s not the end of the world. This was the first ceramic position I’ve really applied to. There will be more opportunities, I know it. But sometimes it can be hard to see the forest through the trees. Good luck to all of you in your endeavors, and remember just because it didn’t work on the first try, doesn’t mean it’s not meant to be. In all my years of throwing ive never tried to throw blindfolded... Until now!! Honestly it was quite a bit easier than I imagined. I think any serious production potter would tell you the same. When we’re making something simpler, like these cups you learn to make them the same way each time, the same moves and the same tools in the same order each time. The moral of the story being: if I can’t do it blind, then I don’t know the shape well enough! 80 minutes of work compacted down into just a single minute. I’ve been working with clay for many years now and it still blows my mind seeing a piece go from freshly throw to trimmed and ready to go through the bisque firing. Seeing all that work being condensed into a single watchable minute’s worth of work is humbling and well as frustrating. This is me throwing a maebyeong styled vase. It is a Korean style that has a small curved rim, short neck, large round shoulders, and much tighter hips. I became intrigued with these from a fantastic potter - @maxadelmanpottery. They’re so much fun to throw because they really teach you to have a delicate and deliberate touch. The large round shoulders cause a lot of torque on the tight waist. Meaning if you apply too much pressure up top the bottom will collapse. What do you guys think of my new logo??? Griffinwareco to me, is so much more than just a name I go by to sell my pots. My first job was working for my dad’s tree trimming company called Griffin Tree Company. So it honestly seemed so fitting to continue that tradition. Well, as I continue to struggle with getting these pictures to really compliment the pieces, I hope you all still enjoy this beautiful marbled vase! I felt that this one was worth showing the landscapes fully because one of my favorite aspects of this piece is how swirled it is on the bottom 😍 I showed this piece a whole back as greenware. It was an example of what could be accomplished with all the clay my students chose to leave out to dry rather than away to use another day. This one turned out to be one of my favorite pieces from the last year 😍😍This was thrown on the wheel then altered afterwards. Hey Friends and Family, I apologize that my posts have become less frequent lately. It’s been rough over here at Griffinwareco unfortunately. I lost my grandmother yesterday and words cannot express the sorrow I am feeling. She was more than just a grandmother to me. She was my guardian and my biggest supporter in all of my endeavors. She was the sweet voice in my ear to help me keep calm under stress and the hug that always let my anxiety fall to the wayside. I’m not sure what life will be like without her, but I know that she would want me to continue doing what I love. So, here’s one of my favorite pieces from the last firing. I must say, I’m a HUGE fan of this big beautiful bowl 😍 this is one of my favorite glazes to work with just because of the amazing variation you get from thin to thick. The blue is beautiful but the brown (when thin) is what I think really pulls out the beauty. The contrast between the two is mesmerizing! Sorry I haven’t posted in a few days; it was a busy weekend! I think it’s high time I give a proper thank you to @nadoceramics /Mrs. Telebrico from Coronado High for giving me the amazing opportunity to take over as her sub for the last Month & and half or so of class! It was just the perfect example of chance and preparedness meeting together. We were introduced through another amazing teaching of mine, @leepuffer, whom I worked with at Grossmont Community College. The two of them took chances on me and I couldn’t be more grateful for that! After discussing with Lee my intentions of possibly teaching ceramics, she told me to take the CBEST and email her good from Kelly Telebrico at Coronado High School. This started an amazing friendship between Kelly and I which has gotten me further into teaching than I ever expected to be at this point. I’m so excited to see where this leads me and once again, I cannot be more thankful for the time I’ve spent learning with both Lee and Kelly. I’m excited for the awesome opportunities that will happen in the future! This is one of the few pieces which will not be for sale as I am gifting it to Kelly for taking that chance on me which has truly opened my eyes to ceramic community! Currently in love with this round beauty 😍 not every pot comes out perfect (this one has a few blistering spots on it) but that doesn’t necessarily take away from its aesthetic appeal. This, to me, is a great example of that! This is made from @aardvarkclay Black Mountain and I love the way this glaze brings out that rustic look of it. It’s been a few days since I’ve been on a wheel making new work, and I’m already dying!! ☠️☠️ Working right now on getting a new motor on my wheel at home so I can get back to it! I won’t lie, I have quite a few favorites from this last kiln. This is definitely one of them. It’s hard to tell from the pictures but it has some very interesting controlled collapsed ripples at the base of the neck. Something I’ve been working on a lot recently and will be spending a lot more time on over the summer! Last glaze kiln finished firing for the semester!! It’s a small load mostly filled with my work, but I’m so excited to unload this guy!! Friends! I must tell you about the amazing experience I had at the @kowalskipottery studio for the @timsceramics demo! This was my first serious introduction into the larger potters community and I cannot be more stoked! Tim is just as hilarious as I imagined. Beyond that, though, seeing him demo his tromp l’oil, you could tell how thorough and thoughtful he is while he’s working. @kowalskipottery was so generous to show us around his beautiful studio. He cares a lot about his studio and he gave us some really cool tips and tricks on how to obtain his studio efficiency and cleanliness. I also got to see that awesome soda kiln Im secretly coveting 😆😆 I was also introduced to some more great artists like @ryanreichceramics and @claytasticvictoria! First time giving some sake sets a try. 5 Sake carafe and 10 sake cups to go with! This is before they’d been trimmed. I’m really loving this dark Black Mountain Clay from aardvark clay! Fires super dark in good reduction and lately I’ve really been getting these @geilkilns firing super well. I messed around with the editing on this one. I wanted you all to see the grittiness of the clay, which I think is awesome looking. I trim this clay a little more than most so that I can show it off 😍 the controlled collapse neck on this is one of my most favorite styles to mess with. If you were curious about why I’m only showing work in progresses, it is because I’m working for my students now, so if all their work can fill the kiln then I push back my work for them. Faceting is a technique that I’m very familiar with from my time in undergrad at @nauflagstaff. It’s been a long time, though, since I actually put it into use. And honestly couldn’t be more stoked to get back into it. This style compounded with bellowing the piece outwards afterwards shows some very interesting attributes of clay that would be otherwise unnoticed. I think most of us assume that the clay moves perfectly in sync the whole time we’re working, but this shows how far that is from reality. And this is one of the many examples of potters pushing the bounds of the field to create new and beautiful pieces of work. I made a funky lil bottle form the other day with a bent neck and didn’t think to check if any of my chucks could work for it 🤪 So, I had to make a chuck from fresh clay and decided I would throw an amphora 🏺 upside down with it afterwards. I’ve decided to aptly name this Amphora: Charles 😂.... (I might be the only who finds that funny 😅). Since I’ve been subbing, I noticed my students tend to leave perfectly good clay left out sometimes. So, I like to gather it all up, wedge it, and throw it myself. Sorry it’s been a while since I’ve posted, but I’ve been in the middle of a pretty weird transition. For those who know me, I’ve always loved making ceramics, but it wasn’t till recently that I actually thought that I could make a living off of it. I’ve been working to make that possible and now I’m a step closer to that! I’m currently substituting long term at Coronado High school for the ceramics teacher and I’m having a blast!
