"oh it's just some unpaid short film, it's not like it really matters" Au contraire, friend. I've been asked to light some really fun commercial shoots because of the effort I put into lighting everything I say yes to. Back in January 2023 I had the joy of working with Jill and Chloe on an unpaid short film, @werewolfmargarita. That film has gone on to win best comedy-horror at one festival, was nominated for best cinematography as well, and it turns out Chloe is the humble owner of an entire fashion business! A line of clothing that Jill was even wearing throughout the shoot without knowing it belonged to Chloe lol When Jill and Chloe inevitably synced up to launch a new clothing line, I was first on the list to come light the indoor scenes! If I hadn't given 100% to "some unpaid short film" last year, then this year I wouldn't have been able to enjoy one of the most infectiously joyful sets I've ever had the pleasure of being on. Maybe that's why so many teams come to town and say, "wow, you're not like the last gaffer we worked with back in nowheresville. How nice to work with someone who is actually excited about the job!" -- This was a rush job - I only had an hour to set this look up! So it was critical to work with Jill ahead of time to establish exactly the look and feel she was going for with this shot. First, this is day for night, so everything needed to be blacked out. A @kelvincinemalighting epos 300 through a 3' softbox with grid acts as the key. This light was positioned at a Rembrandt angle for when our talent walks up into the counter into her B mark. An @aputure.lighting nova 300 panel pointed at the wall and ceiling fills the room with a saturated blue hour wash. A flag helps control the spill from hitting the talent or back wall directly. A couple infinibars were placed on the shelving unit in the corner to help lift that out of darkness, another one was placed the stove for the same reason. Mean Girls (2024) Soft light was the *popular* choice! In this promo interview with @reneerapp for Mean Girls (2024), we keyed with a book light using our @aputure.lighting 1200D, an ultrabounce, and a 6x6ft 1/2 grid cloth. This is one of my favorite cloths—it spreads light very evenly but doesn’t bring down the intensity too much (~2 stop loss). For fill we bounced a @nanlite_global 60b with a lantern towards a 6x6ft unbleached muslin. Peep that contrast on the right cheek. We created a subtle circular halo around the interviewee’s head on a pink backdrop, using an Aputure 300d ii with spotlight mount through a quarter silk and a piece of shower curtain. Sometimes you have to improvise and use what’s available to get the effect you want. Our Director wanted some old school fresnels in the frame to stay with that BTS theme; these and the Nova p600c helped add more depth to the frame. The Inverse Square Law is a general principle of physics because it comes about as a result of the function of the surface area of a sphere. The Inverse Square Law is defined as the intensity of a physical quantity (light, sound, etc.) being inversely proportional to the square of the distance from the source. Simplified, this means that our lights don't reduce linearly with distance, but exponentially. But you knew the math behind this ever since you were a kid! We can derive this same formula from the surface area of a sphere. To make this a little easier, let's redefine "light" as "a certain number of photons" because that's basically what watts is if you dive into the units. So a sphere with radius of distance "r" from our point source would have a certain number of photons covering its surface area, let's say the surface area is 4 for sake of ease. If we double the radius of our sphere to "2r", we don't double the surface area, we quadruple it due to that squared portion. And we now have a sphere with surface area of 16. The number of photons being ejected from our light source didn't change, but we did just increase our surface area by a favor of 4. So the same number of photons that covered a sphere with a surface area of 4 must also cover a sphere with a surface area of 16. Which means, that any corresponding portion of the second sphere is receiving 1/4 the number of photons as the initial sphere! This works whether we're talking about the whole sphere as an idealized point source radiating into space, or we're talking about a specific beam angle of that sphere, which would be more akin to our lights, because units cancel in ratios! A 35° beam angle is really a ratio of 35/360, and since both sides of our ratio carry that same fraction, they'd cancel out, and we'd still be left with a ratio of 1 to 4! So no matter how you want to calculate it, DOUBLING THE DISTANCE REDUCES INTENSITY BY 1/4. Hope this helped you see the inverse square law in a new light!

Do you know the best way to place a flag for the hardest cut? While setting flags, nets, and large frames is primarily a grip's job, every gaffer is inevitably going to find themselves working without one. Here's two simple rules to follow when placing flags with point source lights to achieve the desired effect: - for a soft/fuzzy cut, place the flag closer to the light - for a hard cut, place the flag as close as possible to the surface where the shadow falls The closer a flag and light are together, the fuzzier the cut, which can be a nice way to have light gradually taper off a background. For the hardest, cleanest cut, place the light as far back as the space and output will allow, and then place the flag as close to frame as possible. This effect happens because our point source lights aren't infinitely small dots, but do occupy some amount of 3D space. When you place a flag close to the light source, you may be cutting light from one side of the COB/reflector/fresnel, while light from the other side is still shining unobstructed into the desired shadow area. The further a flag is from the source, the smaller the output area appears relative to the flag, and the more optimal the cut will be as a result. And to make the sharpest cuts with absolute ease, go get yourself a spotlight! ----- An @intellytech mega-8 saves the day in this tight fitting setup, allowing me to fully fill an 8x8 magic cloth within a distance of a few feet. This compact but soft key light setup allowed us to place our talent deep into the golf simulator bay, and more importantly gave the DP the look he was going for. TM-30 has quickly become one of the two new standards for how the quality of a light is measured, but what does it actually test for? Well, there's actually 3 components to reading a TM-30 score! The first is the Rf value, or a light's fidelity index. This is an averaged score from 1 (worst) to 100 (best) that measures a lights ability to accurately reproduce 99 pre-determined colors, a much wider range than CRI or TLCI uses. Lights scoring above 90 generally reproduce colors fairly accurately. The second value is the Rg value, the lights gamut index. The gamut index measures how saturated the colors are that are produced by this light. This is also an averaged score, but can range from below 60 to above 140, with 100 meaning equivalent saturation to a daylight reference. Below 100 means a color appears desaturated by this light, over 100 means a color would appear oversaturated. Lastly, the color vector graph is a visual display of which colors are saturated or desaturated by the light, and also which way those hues shift if at all. This is represented as a circle overlaid on top of a color wheel, with the points of the circle corresponding to the test points, and little arrows indicating shifts of saturation and hue. TM-30 is a comprehensive test that really digs into the nuances of the color reproduction of a light. It's no wonder that it's become the favorite of a lot of DP's and gaffers since it's inception!

My first documentary was released last week on YouTube. Link in bio. Here are some facts about the doc: It was produced on a budget of 6k. I handled the filming myself, being on site for 12 out of the 25 days. Approval to shoot was granted just a day before the project began. I had to get O’Shea certified to be on the lifts with the artist. Due to the lack of pre-production, it was challenging to anticipate the direction and outcome of the documentary. Grateful I was able to enlist @joosbox for drone shots and @onthesearchforpineapples for editing. Despite the lack of pre-production, I’m happy with how it turned out for my first documentary.
