A roll bar occurs because a LED or LED display is out of phase with the camera. We often measure things in Hz because, what is important is the frequency, the amount of times it happens in a second. Hey guys what's up? Hope y'all are all doing well! Today I just wanted to get this off my chest and felt like sharing my brutally honest opinion with you all about what's gone wrong with movies. Why are movies turn so dumb and futile? Why you don't feel anything when you watch them? I have a lot of things to share with you all, trust me, like brand new ideas, more knowledge about the things we misunderstand and take for granted etc, more nuanced and some really fresh opinions on real life and the true definition of wisdom and all. But yeah don't interpret this as a negative post 😂 this is just my opinion, you agree, don't agree let me know in the comments what you think, would love to hear from you Alright, so without further ado let's dive right in to the topic According to scriptwriting gurus, movies are bad if they disregard the basic rules of storytelling, which were developed by the ancient Greek playwrights. However, movies are also bad if they blindly obey these rules without showing personality or originality. Streaming services like Netflix briefly revitalized artful storytelling, but no longer. When was the last time a movie made you hold your breath, shed a tear, or jump from your chair? Everyone has experienced these visceral reactions before, but they tend to be the exception rather than the norm. Most movies flash before our eyes without provoking the slightest thought or feeling, and within months, weeks, and sometimes even days, we forget all about them except maybe their lead actors. Why? Many successful filmmakers, including Charlie Kaufman, strongly dislike the gurus. In Adaptation, a semi-fictional movie about his own experience with writer's block, Kaufman attends a storytelling seminar from Robert McKee. Another dramatic horror grade. I went for a gritty, contrasty look with lots of texture to really put you into the headspace of the character. As the scene progresses, I wanted to push the grade even further. For the last part, which is basically a supernatural possession with seizure-like events, I decided to have fun with it and played with the idea of an additional monochromatic red and a black&white look triggered by the seizure like events and emphasizing the state of mind, rather than pretending the room light is changing. I purposefully also let those looks have different tonal values to make the switch between them more jarring. Lighting a virtual space isn’t as hard as you might think. The first step is to shoot plates or design the space you want to create (and that’s someone else’s job 🙃) Once you know what you’re trying to replicate, lighting is essentially the same process for green screen replacement with a video, or a virtual background designed in Unreal Engine. The most important thing to create a realistic set in the studio is balancing values and dialing the direction of sources. You can be as simple or complex as you’d like. When filming scenes under the forest canopy in Avatar, Russel Carpenter, ASC used dozens of moving stage lights with rotating gobos overhead to replicate the swaying leaves and dappled light of a living forest floor. Once you know the direction and quality of your lights, it’s pretty much just vibes. Trust your eye and make it look good. VFX and color teams can add layers to make the subject appear to be truly in the virtual world you created. We have some pretty talented colleagues in post who often don’t get enough credit for the work they do. We didn’t have a James Cameron movie budget, so we used two Arri Skypanel S60s in an 8x8 overhead softbox with 50º control grid for a toppy fill and a third Skypanel on the ground with a Chimera for the key. A 4x4 beadboard on the key side helped wrap the light and lift the shadows. Shooting narrative in Amsterdam with @levantsik 🎥 I’d only managed to recce this location the day before shooting due to schedule and flight timings. I’d done some pre virtual recce on Google maps, so already knew that lighting from outside wouldn’t be possible due to the second floor location and no permit to close off public walkways. On the physical recce, me and the gaffer hatched a plan to treat the space as a studio, blacking out all off camera windows. There was a small, slim balcony outside, camera right which allowed us to place a single light and @thelightbridge reflector to mimic direct sun. Ideally I’d have been able to recce earlier and have some extra time in pre-production, but cinematography is all about doing the best with what you’ve got. I’m pretty happy with how this one turned out in the end 👌🏻
