On the easternmost point of Oahu, you’ll find what I think is one of the most breathtaking hikes in Hawaii. With a conveniently wide path winding all the way to the top, Makapuu Lighthouse Trail (Kaiwi Shoreline Trail) is a relatively easy and great hike to go on with friends, family, kids and it’s even pet-friendly! The drive there is exceptionally pretty, and the hike is the perfect midway point during a circle island ride on Kamehameha Highway. In my opinion, walking on the Makapuu Lighthouse Trail is one of the best out there if you need a flat surface. It’s a smooth path all the way up, but it is a steady incline so it may make you sweat depending on your fitness level. There are plenty of viewpoints as you go up (basically each turn has a viewpoint), but the path is wide enough that you can stop on the side and enjoy the view if you need a breather. FUN FACT: If you’re lucky enough to be here during the winter, keep a lookout for humpback whales in the ocean. They come in quite close to shore and the best way to spot them is to continuously scan the water looking for their spout (it’s a puff of mist that shoots up vertically as they come to the surface to breathe). Have you seen the Gold Dust Day Gecko in Hawaii before? Geckos are a special childhood memory for me. In Hawaii, as children, we’re taught that geckos are a good thing. They eat all the annoying gnats and small bugs that fly and crawl in and out of your house (I just wish they ate more of those flying cockroaches!). They are known as aumakua, a sort of guardian spirit for your house and family. As ancestral gods, most locals will leave them alone to do their job of eating the bugs and personally I find that their coos and clicking noises are comforting no matter where I am in Hawaii. Plus, look how adorable they are! FUN FACT: The gold dust day gecko is actually from Madagascar and is what we call an invasive species. Although, all geckos are actually non-indigenous since Hawaii did not have any reptiles at all before humans arrived. Lanikai Beach is a beautiful stretch of pristine sand and clear ocean waves in Kailua and is right next to the also very pretty Kailua Beach. While not as accessible as Kailua Beach, Lanikai Beach is noted as one of Oahu’s most beautiful beaches and year after year makes the top lists for most beautiful beaches in the world. If you definitely want to get a spot on Lanikai Beach, make sure you come early (I’d say before 10 AM) and on a weekday. The weekends get exceptionally crowded since this is such a popular beach. Where I Stay?! Usually, no trip to Maui is complete without a stop @dakitchenmaui Unfortunately, the original location permanently closed down due to covid. Luckily, they have a pop-up for dinner daily 4pm-8:30pm @pikocafemaui in Kihei near Longs! Menu & seating is limited, but they get all the favorites! My go-to is their fish tempura, fried musubi, katsu cutlet and the mixed plate with all the goodies! It was pretty empty when we went, but word is getting around and the takeout line is building! Hope they stick around! Piko Cafe is closed nights, but Da Kitchen stay open and they use the same phone number to call in your order. You save $50/ticket if you just do 1 park a day. Kids under 3 are #FREE. 2) if going more than 3 days, take a break-day to keep it exciting. Kids go bored of it after the first couple days 🤦♀️ 3) 📲Download the #DisneylandApp to check ride wait times, closures, character viewing times, show/parade times, height limits. It rained while we were there and forced some rides to close, including #RadiatorSpringsRacers 😫 4)🌬 🌧 pack layers of warm clothes and ponchos if travelling in Rainy season! It made it hard to travel with kids, but as long as you are covered, you can keep going. The rain thins out the crowd and lines are short! 5) 🥡pack lots of snacks to save on food costs. Outside food is allowed. Water cups available for #FREE. 6) 👶bring a stroller for kids that may need a nap or even just to push around your stuff and packages, especially if you will be staying til closing. 7) 🚗stay close enough to walk to the park or catch a shuttle or uber. Parking is $25/day and not on-site. See previous post for hotel suggestions #ebatesHawaii. 8) 🙅♀️ Avoid #DisneyCaliforniaAdventure on the weekends! The lines for most are 1 hour+. One of the toughest decisions when visiting @Disneyland is where to stay?! I use @Kayak to research the best prices of all the travel websites. The best option for us was to stay within walking distance to the park at a reasonable price with free parking! (Many nearby hotels charge for parking and daily parking at Disneyland is $25!) We loved our extended stay #HowardJohnson #Anaheim @hojoanaheim right outside Disneyland on Harbor Blvd. Free parking and just a 1/2 mile, 8 minute walk to the park entrance! It wasn't the cheapest at $200/night before taxes, but it was clean and loved the bunk beds for the kids in renovated Building 1. It was too cold to make use of the mini waterpark. They even had balloons for the kids everyday. Once ready to book, we use @ebatesShopping to get up to 5% additional #cashback on the cost.
