Cowboy Gumby has returned! ⚡️💪⚡️ Today I entered Gumby into his first car show, in the category of 70s-80s Trucks. 🤩 The last three days after I got off work, I stayed up til 1:30am buffing, polishing, and detailing ol Gumby to bring some life back into it, to get ready for this debut. Around 200 vehicles attended, as a fundraiser for a local church’s youth ministry and onsite automotive shop. Talked with some old timers who reminisced about an old Ford truck they used to have. Had to make a quick u-turn after seein this beauty! 😍 A ‘79 F-250 Custom crew cab that the current gentleman has had for a couple years now. He said when he got it, the truck had its original styleside bed that was well beyond beaten up. The back glass had also been broken out, to which the prior owner said it made loading lumber easier! 😳 He also mentioned the previous owner was probably a partaker of some special concoctions 🥴🤣 Interior has been completely redone in a nice blue, bed replaced with a stepside and the whole truck repainted. New year, new tie rod! 🤩 Ol Gumby has had a shake in the steering, when going about 40mph, since the day I picked it up from @bumpin_uglys. After recently having two guys, on two different occasions, drive up alongside me pointing at my shaking front tires and shouting, “Your wheel’s about to fall off!!” . . . I figured I best start gettin to work on the front end. 😅 So today the old )( bent tie rod was retired and replaced with a brand-spankin new beefier one! And after the first test drive this evening, the shake has subsided quite a bit! Happy Thanksgiving from the historic Outlaw Station! 🦃 Decided to go visit this Texas landmark after hearing rumors of its possible demolition. Built prior to the National Prohibition Act of 1919, the then operating gas station expanded to include the sale of moonshine. At one point, selling more moonshine than gasoline.🍺 Built using stone and arched bands of red and white brick, the structure also includes petrified wood sourced from the nearby town it sits on the outskirts of. It’s even rumored that the legendary outlaws, Bonnie & Clyde, were regular customers of this law-breaking establishment. Nature is slowly reclaiming the building after it was abandoned in the ‘60s, but is still standing strong on this ol backroad. Stopped in to take a look at this sweet rig today, a ‘71 F100 Sport Custom! Some great patina on the paint (Swiss Aqua maybe??) but there are some Swiss cheese holes on each door and fenders. Must’ve had a bed liner in it because scratches were scarce. Absolutely love the spot light and diggin the ol stickers above the rear window that you can see if you zoom into the window pic. The owner of the car lot said it was another guy’s, but it runs and drives. Out with the old and in with the new! 😎 With a new alternator and belts in hand, I had my fingers crossed that this would resolve the starting issue . . . Once back together, I went to go start Gumby aaaand still nothing. Hooked the battery charger up, only to have it say it was “charged-maintaining charge.” Figuring that maybe there was still something wrong with the battery, I took it over to have it tested only for them to say all looked good. 😵💫 Gotta be a grounding issue! Looking throughout the engine bay for any possible suspects, nothing was jumping out at me. Looked at the recently installed horn, still didn’t see an issue. Pressed the horn button just for funzies, it worked. . . decided to try to start the truck again . . . voila! Never would I have thought that Texas would be so dang picky about vehicle inspections! I knew having mufflers would be a necessity, and that I’d have to get a horn hooked up to pass. After driving Gumby to work on a fairly daily basis now for about 2 months (and not having plates 🤫) I thought I’d try to get inspected without the horn . . . but at least it was visibly sitting on the floorboard 😅 Fail . . . no functioning horn and e-brake doesn’t hold 🙄 So, finally got the horn installed after tracking down all the parts they don’t tell you might need, and my dad MacGyvered a clasp to shorten the too-long cable for the brake. Monday morning came aaaand . . . PASS!!! 🎉🥳🎉 Now off to the registration office! Driving over I noticed how empty the parking lot was, but thought, “Great! I bet there isn’t a long wait!” Oh no, just closed on Columbus Day 🤦🏼♂️ A brand new morning, and I knew it was gonna be a good day! Hop in Gumby, crank it over and nothin 🤣 Geez! After locating more unused wires than a bowl of leftover spaghetti, we figured one of these loose wires was grounding and draining the battery. Taped them off and jumped the battery, and I was off to registration. Little bit of paperwork and Gumby is now FINALLY registered! Go back out the truck, click click click. Dead! Ol Gumby was in dire need of a new exhaust, and since the dang exhaust kept falling apart at some of the connection points, it was time to just rip the hunkajunk off. I betcha Stevie Wonder could’ve done a better welding job than whoever did this👨🦯👀 And 2 mufflers in-line of each other?!?! What in the world! Now with straight pipes, I was pretty certain I wouldn’t pass Texas Inspection to get the truck registered. Luckily I knew of a muffler shop that could get me legal again. First thing Monday morning, @chrisservicemufflertx, in Weatherford TX, put Gumby on the lift and got after it. I considered doing the exhaust on my own, but these guys already have all the right tools and know how to get it completed in a few hours. 🤷🏼♂️ After a slight change of plan on how I wanted the dual exhaust to exit, we settled on dumping them just before the rear axel. Clean and simple. Put on a couple @flowmastermufflers Super 10s to keep it on the louder side with some grit. All said and done, I’m lovin it! Welp, even with two hints nobody correctly guessed what was in the box . . . “Buckle up” and “hip” . . . but y’all made me realize all the additional parts I need to get 🤣😳💸 New seatbelts!! 🥳 Maybe not the most exciting new parts to get, but most likely something I need to pass Texas inspection. Plus, Texas has the worst drivers you’ve ever seen, so safety wise, not a bad thing to have. Gumby currently has only the drivers side retractor & latch plate but no buckle, so I still can’t buckle up. Passenger side has neither. You’d be amazed how hard it is to find original green seatbelts! One company had them, but you had to wait over a month. The next morning, my dad and I started diagnosing what the problem could be. Was it starving for fuel? Could something have dislodged in the fuel tank and was now plugging the fuel line? Or maybe it was flooded due to something stuck open? 🤷🏼♂️ Crawling under the truck, it was noted that Gumby probably used to have a second fuel tank when it had an original bed. My dad noticed the old gas tank transfer valve dangling below the cab on the drivers side. What initially appeared to be a breather tube, we then noticed was actually dripping fuel. It ended up being the fuel line that went to the second tank, which had been cut and left resting on the frame rail. No longer in need of this valve, we removed it and reconnected the fuel line in hopes that maybe this could’ve been the culprit. Probably leaking fuel the whole trip home, it may have sucked in air at some point . . . We checked to see if the fuel pump had failed, but it was still working fine. After a couple of tries, the ol Highboy fired back up!! 🎉 Oh yeah . . . remember how I said I thought the truck sounded louder near the end of the trip home?? Gumby Goes To Texas: Part 18 — I couldn’t help but smile as I rolled into my town’s downtown square! What an amazing trip we were just about to finish. 1,900 miles across 7 states! The truck did great, other than using over 13 quarts of oil . . . yes, you read that correctly, 13! 👀 I called my dad to tell him I was about 5 minutes out, and to take a video as I pulled into the driveway. The grand arrival! Coming over one of the last little hills, I hear bluh blup bluh bluh blup bluh . . . 😫 The truck dies so I put it into neutral and coast into a parking lot just ahead. DANG IT!!!! Not more that 2 miles from home!!! We were so close! Ugh!! So I pop the hood, let my dad know that it just died and try to figure out what the heck is going on. Could I be out of gas? No way, I just filled it up a little over an hour ago . . . But it almost sounded like it ran out or was starving for fuel??? So I added the 5 gallons (the first time I used the gas can the whole trip 😒) and it took the entire can. My dad showed up and tried to get it to turn over, but the sputtering continued. Finally on another crank, it fired up and ran “ok” enough that we tried to drive it the remaining 2 miles. Pulling out of the parking lot and onto the main road, I got maybe a hundred feet before bluh bluh blup bluh and died again. So we hooked up the tow strap and proceeded to limp it home. I will say, fortunately for all the miles we covered and the desolate areas we drove through, I’m very thankful that ol Gumby finally had enough this close to home. 🙌 Beats being in the middle of Nowhere, Wyoming! Gumby Goes To Texas: Part 17 — The next morning I went out to the truck, and sure enough, we were still sitting on the shoreline of Lake Gumby! 😅 Yuuup, more dripity-dropity all through the night. Guess I’m gonna have to find some 3XL Depends for ol Gumby 💦🫣 After a couple cinnamon rolls and more oil added, we were back on the road for the final stretch. A little ways down the highway, I thought I saw what looked to be smoke . . . thankfully not coming from the truck!! Up ahead I could see the beginning of traffic backing up due to something on the side of the road that had caught on fire. Y’all gotta be careful when you’re traveling through Texas! Gumby Goes To Texas: Part 16 — The sun was setting on the Texas panhandle as I rolled into the town of Childress, TX. I’ve always been fairly lucky with getting a hotel on the first try, without making reservations beforehand. So I figured this one wouldn’t be any different. Weeelllp, apparently my luck ran out . . . no rooms available. The place next door, also full. 😤 After a little googling, I was able to book a room an hour away in Vernon, TX. So we made a beeline to avoid driving in the dark, in case of any breakdowns. Before getting out of Childress though, I knew of another sweet photo op . . . a converted vintage Spartan travel trailer, turned into a motorhome! How cool? Driving into the night, I felt like the truck had steadily gotten louder 🤔 hmmm. Or maybe my ears were just getting tired. More on this later. 🤣 10:15pm we finally crawled into the hotel for the night. Let me tell ya, the air conditioning in that room was pure bliss. Gumby Goes To Texas: Part 15 — FINALLY! The Great State of Texas! 🥳🇺🇸 After a short drive through Oklahoma, seeing the Texas welcome sign was like seeing an oasis in the desert. We made it! 😌 But the drive wasn’t over yet, as 7hrs / 430 miles still remained. Although still quite warm without A/C, luckily it was only 100° at the time compared to the 115°-122° we have had recently. 🥵 Stopping for gas, and adding more oil, I finally broke down and bought a little foldable cooler to keep my drinks in. The truck was still running well and didn’t seem to mind the increased temperature as long as we were moving. Oh, did I forget to mention that none of the original gages work besides the jumpy speedometer?! 🤣 Luckily someone, before @bumpin_uglys , had installed 3 cheapie gages for oil temp, engine temp and battery charge. Gumby Goes To Texas: Part 14 — Mountain ranges began to fade away and rolling hills with wide open plains took their place. I guess with being born and raised in the mountains, there’s a lifelong love for being higher in altitude. ⛰️ A little over 2hrs down the road, the town of Lamar, CO came into sight. It didn’t take long for me to spot some photo ops and whip the ol Highboy around! Check out this art deco style movie theater! **Fun fact - the Lamar Theater opened its doors on November 15, 1946! 📽️ Then just around the corner, a railroad goliath . . . Steam Locomotive No. 1819 proudly on display! 🤩 How incredible would it have been to see this crossing the countryside back in 1906. So of course, Gumby insisted on taking a photo with it! Back on the road, the views went on for miles and miles. My hope for the day was to reach Childress, TX, roughly over 5hrs / 330 miles from Lamar. At this point, I think either the heat (or somethin in the air from y’all in Colorado 👀) was getting to me. On the bright side, I didn’t need to worry about doing an oil change on this trip, because there is constantly fresh oil being added! Win-win! 🤷🏼♂️ Were any of y’all a @hotwheelsofficial addict as a kid (or as an adult . . .)? I sure was! To this day I still keep an eye out for sweet die casts or HotWheels. Gumby Goes To Texas: Part 12 — Do you remember that feeling as a kid when you’d try to get a big rig to honk for you, and they’d oblige by lighting off them air horns? I had two truckers pass me (obviously) giving me a wave of approval and honk for ol Gumby. I tell you what, I was giddy as a kid again! 😂 As we rolled on into Denver, CO, we couldn’t have timed it better in joining the rush hour traffic. 🙃 Although it was stop and go, Gumby did well and didn’t show signs of overheating. Finally through the thick of it, it was time for a pit stop . . . not for gas, but to add more oil! Golden hour was now upon us, and man did the countryside look pretty having a Highboy shadow roll across it. 🇺🇸 The over 357 mile trip for the day was coming to an end as we pulled in Limon, CO for the night. Gumby Goes To Texas: Part 11 — Gettin on down the road, my goal for the day was to make it to Limon, Colorado. Staying there for the night would still put me over 11hrs from home. Still driving in Wyoming, I glanced in my mirror to see another old truck gaining on me . . . obviously I was being passed by everyone as I stayed at the comfortable speed of 50mph. 🤣🤷🏼♂️ An older GMC pickup couple, hauling what looked to be a home built teardrop trailer! Sweet setup to travel the country! As I approached Cheyenne, WY, I could see a pretty large rain storm moving right across the highway. Just before I reached city limits, I could’ve swore it looked like a funnel forming out to my left.🌪️👀 Then it happened . . . 🚨🚔🚨 Yuuup. I knew for a fact I wasn’t getting pulled over for speeding! 🤣 Officer walked up, said it looked like I was having a hard time keeping it out of the shoulder. To which I replied, that it’s hard to keep this old rig in a straight line & I was concerned / watching the swirling clouds next to me. Then I saw an old truck parked out front . . . so I just had to go take a gander! I can say for certain, this is the LARGEST Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck I’ve ever crossed paths with! 🤩 Gooodness they were big! Gumby Goes To Texas: Part 9 — Walking out to the truck the next morning, at first glance I thought there was water puddled up from the storm earlier that night . . . but then I realized that nothing else was wet, anywhere. 😳 Drip, drip, drip all night long💧👀 It was now very evident just how much oil was leaking from this old rig. The whole underneath had some amount of oil on it, whether old grime or fresh droplets forming. Shoot, there was even oil dripping from the rear mud flaps. The MUD FLAPS!!! 🤣 Loaded up my bags, and you guessed it, added more oil, then it was time to get some fuel. Gumby Goes To Texas: Part 8 — Once I got back on the road after dinner, it was almost 8:00pm but still a bit of daylight left. Earlier that morning, I was planning on trying to get to Limon, CO, but since it was over 7hrs away still, no way was that happening! As the miles went by, I couldn’t help but notice how calm it felt driving. Hardly any other vehicles on the road, scenic rolling hills all around, cool air and a glowing sunset. All was well. With the sun now set, my goal was to get to a hotel before complete darkness. Each exit sign I passed would say “No Services” which made me worry a little, knowing I needed fuel soon. Finally found an exit with a gas station, got fueled up and grabbed a candy bar. I asked the young lady at the counter what the next big town was, which she replied, “How big are you talking? It is Wyoming for that matter!” I said I was just looking for a hotel, which I learned was still over an hour away. 😅 With the pedal to the metal . . . still only keeping it at 50mph to keep everything happy, I made a beeline for Casper, WY. It was now completely dark out, and as I cruised down the highway I would catch the glimpse of antelope standing near the shoulder 👀🙃 Hitting a deer or antelope in my new-to-me truck was the last thing I wanted! Coming over a hill, I could finally see the city lights of Casper in the distance. We made it to the hotel, got checked in and only minutes later we were hit with a downpour of rain! Gumby Goes To Texas: Part 7 — My next destination for the day was 4hrs / 280 miles away, in the town of Sheridan, Wyoming. I think I surprised one of my oldest friends when I texted him that I was headed his way in a couple hours! 😁 We haven’t seen each other in over 5 years, which would’ve been at his wedding. I cruised throughout Sheridan’s downtown as I waited for my friend to get off work and was surprised to see all the western signage, statues and murals everywhere you looked! And around the corner, BEHOLD not one, but 2 old Fords sitting out in front of this house!😍 Shortly thereafter, I got to reconnect with Daniel, Miranda and finally meet their baby boy! Thank you guys for taking some time out of your evening to treat me to dinner. Great seeing y’all after so long! With some daylight left to burn, we said our goodbyes and I continued heading south. Wasn’t sure where or how far I’d make it that evening. Gumby Goes To Texas: Part 6 — The next morning, it was time to check the oil before hitting the road. Not so surprised, the truck had gone through a bit . . . well more like a lot of oil. 👀😳 Since the auto parts stores weren’t open yet, I thought I’d cruise down Bozeman’s main street. Coming around the corner I saw a fellow VW enthusiast, who had parked to grab their morning brew. Comment which would you drive home: the Bug or Highboy. I know what I’m choosing 😍 Enough time had passed, so headed over to get some more oil. Gumby Goes To Texas: Part 5 — If you’re ever on a road trip, it’s a must to stop at cool things to a get a photo! Look at the size of this longhorn!! 🤯 If it hadn’t been so high, I woulda strapped that sucker to the flatbed! 👀🤣 This was actually only my second time being in Montana, the first time being just a month earlier for my friend’s wedding. But this area I hadn’t driven through before, and again, so beautiful as you cross over the Continental Divide. The first day of driving was over 6.5hrs and 415 miles, and Bozeman was finally coming into sight! Met up with my friends for dinner at a local restaurant in town, then headed back to their house.
