Photography lecturer Jerry Galea is one of four international exhibitors showing work at ‘Ulaanbaatar Photo Week 2024’ photography festival. The exhibition ‘Displaced’ explores the complex relationship between truth and photography. It seeks to interrogate the past depictions of Mongolian herder society taken by foreigners to Mongolia (which Jerry is one), through a recontextualization of his earlier photographic project, ‘A Wandering Life – Journey with Nomads’ taken in 2001. The photograph is never a fixed representation as it unfolds across various histories of photographic practice and the exhibition invites the viewer to explore the idea that photographs are not finite statements of fact but offer subjective perspectives that can change over time and who views them. The photographs depict Mongolian herders and urbanscapes, combining two series of photographs captured seventeen years apart during a period of time when Mongolian herder society has undergone drastic change.
