This is the Built In Sun appreciation episode! Released on August 7, 2015 via PIAPTK Records, Built In Sun is my first and currently only solo record. BIS began as an instrumental idea, with inspirations landing somewhere between John Cale’s Fear, the punker vibrations of The Wipers, John Reis and my favorite soundtrackists, John Brion and Clint Mansell. Recorded both at my studio in Seattle and with the late Richard Swift at National Freedom, I made a point to collaborate with my friends and former bandmates. I frikkin love this man, one of the only musicians I looked up to as a teen and as an adult who always motivated me to play music in a band. Custom Floor Clear Day U.S. Tour 1994 - Part 21 Thursday, June 16, 1994—Northbound we head on a five-hour trek from Cincinnati, Ohio to Ann Arbor, Michigan. On the way, we stop at the Neil Armstrong Museum, but unfortunately it's already closed. A medium-sized crowd greets us at the Blind Pig. It's Drive Like Jehu bass player Mike Kennedy's birthday and he quickly proceeds to acquire one of the shittiest faces I've ever seen. Whoever buys him a shot can request a song, so Jehu has to bust out a bunch of old ones that they haven't practiced in quite a while, but they manage to pull 'em off anyhow. By the end of the set, Mike is raging so hard, he throws his bass out into the audience repeatedly. Needless to say, it's way out of tune. John Reis keeps unplugging Rick Fork's guitar and Rick starts a dogpile on stage. After the chaos subsides, Mike is seen smiling, staggering around, throwing up, passing out and almost dying. Onward we proceed to the ever-present Interstate. Michelle and Adam blow up at each other in the cranky heat of a "It's 4:00 a.m. and we can't find a motel room anywhere!" episode. Adam storms off and stays with Jehu somewhere, while Michelle and I find a cheap $24 Ramada Inn in Kalamazoo. Custom Floor Clear Day U.S. Tour 1994 - Part 19 Tuesday, June 14, 1994—During another “chaos while driving” episode in our caravan, Drive Like Jehu's bass player, Mike Kennedy, leans out of his window and slaps a huge firework on the hood of our truck—creating a big, loud, colorful rooster tail for all to see and laugh at. After Ottawa, our next show is in Toronto at The Rivoli on Queen Street, where Adam is seen getting a backrub from some random fan girl. Ah, the perks of being in his other band. After the show, an impromptu jam session forms out back in the alley with John Reis on acoustic guitar, Gar Wood from Tanner on electric guitar and a mini amp, someone else on acoustic guitar, Dirty (Jehu's roadie) on garbage can percussion, and Tanner’s Chris Prescott on a little marching drum set--all topped off with a car headlight show and bottle-breaking accents. This is a pretty amazing moment of spontaneity and is actually just as fun as the "real" show we just finished. Next up, we pass through Niagara Falls in the dark, misty cold of early morning and experience its amazing roar, which is such a powerful force of nature. Then we head out on an all-night hell drive to Columbus, Ohio. Rocket From The Crypt - Born In '69 (Elemental, 1996) The first single from 'Scream, Dracula, Scream!' and also the band's first for the Elemental label. RFTC had already been on my radar for a few years, but I think this was probably the first song of theirs I actually heard, when it initially appeared on an NME freebie cassette a few months before this single was released.

While best known as a musician with Drive Like Jehu, @hotsnakesband, Obits, & Pitchfork, he was also a prolific visual artist who not only created the fliers, posters, & album covers for all of his bands (& others) but also exhibited his graphics at more than a dozen gallery shows.
