Nancy Fowle will be teaching this class on Saturdays, December 2 and 9 from 1 to 4 pm each day. Lace knitting opens a whole new world for the knitter. In this two session class, you will learn many of the basic lace stitches used for creating lace garments. This course is designed to teach you how to read lace charts: how to add beads to lace patterns; how to create your own lace projects; and how to finish and block you lace pieces. We have a couple of spots available in our Beginner Lace class this Saturday March 18th from 1-3:30 with Cheryl den Hartog. The pattern is “Crescent Beach” designed by Cheryl and knit using Maiden Hair a luxurious blend of silk and mohair hand dyed by @fleeceartist_handmaiden. Our hero structure this month is lace knitting. Lace knitting is a traditional knitting technique that has origins in Europe in Shetland, Estonia, Orenburg (Russian lace), and further across the globe in Japan. It creates a delicate and intentionally holey fabric, that can be used for clothing, shawls and household items. Lace knitting using very fine yarns and more complex stitch structures allows fabrics as fine as woven cloths to be made but without the limitations that weaving on a loom presents. While knitting lace can be considered extremely complicated, in reality, as with most textile work, it can be as simple or as complex as you’d like it to be. Using simple knit, purl and basic increases and decreases, it’s possible to knit stunning lace designs. It’s also essential to have a pencil and paper to keep track of where you are in a row or round, so that you don’t get lost! The lace pattern in the image is one that I knitted up, to get a feel for how the combination of various knitted decreases and yarn overs can create a basic lace structure that can zig zag! Whilst this may look like a crumply hair net at the mo, i am busy doing the last few rows of my lace stole sampler to show the students what they will be capable off after my forth coming Lace knitting class @the_loom_shed 🧶 how exciting!
