Thank you to the honorable Chancellor I’Aesha Myles for swearing me into my seat to serve as interim representative until official election term ends in August. Thank you to all the amazing ladies for welcoming me with open arms/heart/mind. I look forward to serving under the incredible Dr. Battle. 📚 I am honored and elated to begin this journey. As I reflect, I can’t help but feel immense gratitude for the pivotal role Mrs. Shields (my 6th grade teacher) played in shaping my life. Mrs. Shields wasn’t just a teacher; she was a beacon of passion, compassion, and unwavering dedication. Mrs. Shields saw potential in each of her students, and made sure to nurture that potential. Her belief in us was infectious, igniting a fire within me to strive for excellence not just academically, but in every aspect of my life. We weren’t just students; we were individuals with unique dreams and aspirations. Her impact didn’t end with sixth grade. The lessons she imparted about perseverance, empathy, and the power of education stayed with me through the years. Villa collected over 2,600 socks for the homeless in the Philadelphia area! Double what was collected last year! Mrs. Kathy Hadden, a volunteer for The Joy of Sox, visited this week to help the fourth grade to sort and bag up the donations, and thanked them for helping to lead the project for those in need in our community. The third, fourth, and fifth grade girls made cards for WWII veteran Lieutenant Ralph Perkner, who turns 103 this month. The girls wished him a very happy birthday and thanked him for his service in the Navy during WWII. Lieutenant Perkner lives in Delaware County and there will be a big birthday party for him on February 25 at a local Mission BBQ. Today, we had a visit from the founders of The Joy of Sox foundation. They spoke to the girls about their foundation and the service project that we will be participating in during Catholic Schools Week here at school as a way of giving back to others. We will be collecting new socks for the homeless in our area. Students and teachers took part in a presentation that helped to show the girls how important it is to give back to those in need and just how important a pair of warm socks is to those less fortunate than us. Ask your daughter! The Joy of Sox is a locally founded nonprofit mission of giving joy and new socks to those experiencing homelessness. There are 10,000 men, women and children experiencing homelessness in the Philadelphia region. They are desperately in need of new socks that are rarely donated. There are few shelters where new socks are available. Those experiencing homelessness suffer the extremes of hot and cold weather. Socks can be more important than food. Villa will begin collecting new socks beginning Monday, January 29, and any student who brings a pair on Monday will be able to participate in Crazy Sock Day! Last year, Villa donated over 1300 pairs of socks and we are hoping we can beat that this year! The third grade Girl Scout troop participated in a Christmas Service Project this year. The troop sponsored 20 children from Saint Agnes Day Center in West Chester and purchased a few Christmas gifts for each child. The girls personalized the gift wrapping and parent sponsors delivered the gifts over to the Day Center. Villa is sharing the warmth this season. The Parent Guild collected donations of men's, women's, and children's winter hats, gloves and scarves on behalf of the students as an entrance into the Christmas Bazaar this week. The donations will be sent to Mother of Mercy House in Kensington, PA. The team at Mother of Mercy House works each day to meet the spiritual, physical and emotional needs of the people of Kensington with love, as they share the mercy of God. Second graders sorted the donations for veterans this week. During the month of November, the second grade collected items to support local veterans. The items will be delivered to the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Coatesville. The students collected almost 300 items of deodorant, body wash, and shampoo. Each second grade homeroom also created a welcome home cart for two veterans who are getting new housing. The letters they wrote to veterans will accompany the donations to the medical center. The fourth grade recently performed a play based on their reading book, Ranita the Frog Princess for the third grade. Dramatic play helps children and to build their comprehension. Acting out and/or retelling a story helps children make that story their own. We are grateful for our Villa Traditions, like Mission Day, that are so valued and looked forward to by our students. Sponsored by the eighth grade to raise awareness, money, and goods for various mission projects, students take on leadership roles to create an event that the entire school can participate in. The gym undergoes a transformation and becomes carnival-like event with karaoke, games, face-painting, story tents and more. Students in each grade take part in the celebration and the funds raised from the event benefit local charitable programs in the community. This year, Mission Day benefitted the IHM Literacy Centers and canned good collected will be donated to the Saint Agnes Day Room. Ours 3s class visited their fourth grade buddies this week to share a retelling of their Pete the Cat and Brown Bear books. The fourth grade students then took turns reading their personal narratives to their buddies, and walked our 3s down the hall to see each decorated pumpkin to go along with their stories. This past week seventh grade began their presentations for Theme Day Thursday, a semster long group project where seventh graders take on the responsibility of teaching their peers about an assigned faith word. These presentations were on the word of goodness service, and the presenters decided to use service projects to help their peers understand the importance of living out service. This included making blankets for project Linus, making candy bags for ACCESS, and writing letters to veterans.
