I really really liked this book. I’m not sure why it’s being compared to ACOTAR as the book is most definitely the hunger games with vampires. And there are plot points directly taken from the hunger games within the trials. HOWEVER, I loved the hunger games and I loved this. I’m a sucker for vampires, and this is no exception. If I could describe this book with one word it would be addicting. I could not put it down and I read it in three days (WHILE STUDYING FOR FINALS) The romance and the tension was soo good and I loved loved loved the love interest. The plot twists were crazy and I did not see them coming at all. I feel like I don’t speak enough about Secrets of Winworth and for that I am truly sorry. I still think it is one of the best things I ever wrote, but it is also one book that has parts of me I have tried to forget in a way. A lot of things Skylar is doing in Book 1, for better or for worse, are the things derived from my own experiences and experiences of my friends. Not everything, that’s for sure, but a lot of the scenes in Apathy were I guess my own way of dealing with the mistakes I’ve made as a teenager. Maybe that’s also why I put too much pressure on myself with the other books, and maybe that’s why Dominion still didn’t come out, because as much as I love that book, I feel that I should have given it more. A lot more. Maybe it’s also the fact that SoW belongs to a darker spectrum of my writing, unlike the things that came out later. I think we can all agree that TPS is not as messed up as SoW, and I don’t know, I feel like I am in a way running away from SoW because it is a reminder of a time when I was extremely angry. Anyway, this is not a sob story or a sad party, or whatever you want to call it. Dominion will come this year, it has been written, The End has been put on that last page, but there’s something missing I guess, and I’m working on fixing that. BOOK REVIEW • Dating You/Hating You - Christina Lauren ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A chance encounter at a party leads to Evie and Carter dating each other. They are both agents at competing firms in Hollywood until one day their worlds are turned upside down and their firms merge and they are now in competition for their job. They both try to keep things professional as they navigate their new reality but they keep pissing each other off. In the end they realize they are not each others’ enemy and they come together to go after the true villain of the story. This was a fun rom-com story. I loved the way the characters immediately hit it off but then had an obstacle thrown at them that made them become temporary enemies. It was like a lovers to enemies to lovers trope! The competition and downright pettiness between Evie and Carter kept things interesting and off course like any good rom-com it all works out happily in the end. I read Bookshops and Bonedust. 🍕🍕🍕🍕 4/5 pepperonis. I enjoyed this, but not as much as I liked Legends and Lattes. This prequel follows Viv as she recovers from a battle injury in the small seaside town of Murk, helping revitalize a bookstore as she does. I loved Potroast and Satchel, two new characters, but none of the other new characters really sucked me in like Legends and Lattes did. Would still recommend it if you liked the first book, though! Briefly putting the woof back in awoofandabook, I borrowed Lilly Anne from @thebond_between for the weekend and she was an absolute dream. She was potty trained, the best snuggler, loved tummy rubs, and couldn't have cared less about a single dog we walked past. She may have a bit of anxiety as she didn't let me out of her sight all weekend and was absolutely insistent going to the bathroom was a team sport, but that could also just be her adjusting to a new place. With the exception of one experimental chomp each at my snake plant and my rug, she didn't get into anything she wasn't supposed to, and let me pick three ticks off her with absolutely no problem. Hiii! Long time no post. Where to begin 😩? I think a lot of hype ruins books for me. The blurb on the back of the book( which you'll see in the next slide) and the editors effusive praise in the book made this book a little bit of an underwhelming read. I bought it because of the blurb 😭 but it put me in a reading slump ( was stuck on it for about 14 days). Overall, it's a fairly good book, the intention behind deserves some applause. The book touched on some really important points like the treatment of refugees in the UK and the oil war in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria (although,as a Nigerian, I strongly feel the writer could have done much better research about Nigeria). Another good thing about this book is how well the writer assumes two different female characters and gives them each unique voices. The book is also very descriptive but the descriptions tend to pull your attention away from the plot for too long at some point. At some point I even got bored. I might try Chris Cleave again sometime, I've heard good things about Incendiary, it might be better than this. Oh, one more thing, if you're an annotation girlie or boy (I'm not really), you'll find some gems here to highlight. Swipe to see the ones I did. Listen for the Lie by Amy Tintera is A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder meets Vera Wong’s Unsolicited Advice for Murderers, and I ate this story up. Lucy, the FMC, is absolutely hilarious and also incredibly relatable. I cackled reading this story… when I wasn’t shouting NO at the characters’ choices, when I wasn’t gasping when the characters did something that they would maybe regret later, and when my jaw wasn’t dropping at the latest plot twist. I will say I thought I had it all figured out, and I was wrong, and I’m kind of sad I was because I feel my theory was more crazy and salacious and I loved it. BUT all that to say, Listen for the Lie was a good freaking time, and I want more. I NEED MORE. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

One doesn’t fall into catastrophes. One takes many small steps of seemingly little importance to eventually stumble into catastrophes. This book tells the slow but obvious fall of Austria in 1938 with the Anschluß. I’ll be honest, this book wasn’t for me because I knew way too much about this topic for this book to spellbinding. However, I think it would be fantastic for someone who is a novice on what happened in Germany post 1933 but before 1941. The writing is well done and moving. The story is an important and all too relevant one. Unless you know a ton about Germany and Austria in the 1930s, I’d recommend this. 🌍 FILM REVIEW 🌍 Back to Black (Dir. Sam Taylor-Johnson, 2024) Between the controversial director choice and the question of whether it was too early to make an Amy Winehouse biopic, the opinions on this film were divided before it had even been released. Back to Black follows Amy Winehouse’s rise to fame alongside her turbulent relationship with her lover, Blake Fielder-Civil. Amy is played by Marisa Abela, who embodies her perfectly. There were a couple of clips circulating TikTok that were met with negative reviews, but I really do think Abela did a fantastic job at playing such an iconic woman. In certain scenes, she was identical to Amy, both physically and emotionally. Blake is played by Jack O'Connell, who kills it as usual; his character is very reminiscent of James Cook from Skins. Regarding the story, I do wish we learnt more about Amy’s upbringing. This seems to be a recurring opinion with multiple people I have discussed the film with. It focused a lot on the negative parts of her life and didn’t do much to enlighten the audience on how the real Amy differed from the tabloid version. The music was amazing, as expected, but it is very hard to replicate a voice as distinct as Amy’s. I think they should have done what they did in Bohemian Rhapsody and mixed both Abela’s voice and Amy’s so that it sounded a little more like her. The performances were what took me out of the film a little bit; I've seen enough Amy Winehouse live shows to know that Abela’s felt almost like a parody but the rest of her performance made up for it. Overall, I’m tired of the Back to Black slander from the people who haven't seen it. I do agree that it might be a little early for a biopic of someone who passed away 13 years ago, but I genuinely don't think they could've got a better actor for the part. If you’re a fan of Amy’s music, I think you’ll like this. Book Event Last week I booked myself onto an author talk at @ink84books. I had picked up @juanodiazartist book slum boy a few weeks earlier, and despite not reading it knew it would be an incredible talk. This was my first author event and it definitely won't be my last. Hearing both authors talk about the writing process, for Juano having to relive trauma from childhood and for @andrewohaganauthor investigating and entwining himself into the lives of all the different characters in his book, was incredible. At the end one of the audience asked why do you think Glaswegian writers are emerging thick and fast and gaining lots of recognition. Between the two men they spoke about Glaswegians having a resistance within them to get through the worst which gives them the tools to write a powerful novel seeped in sadness and hardship. I thought this was an amazing quote. It was also fantastic to see the strong bond between the two men, this was Juanos first public event and it was great to see a more seasoned author helping to guide him through it and bring the conversation back to his fantastic memoir. Slum Boy is Juano Diaz first book and hopefully not the last. Caledonian Road is Andrew O'Hagans newest novel and I can't wait to get into it after finishing Mayflies earlier this year. A P R I L R E W I N D ⏮️ My first month of my bookstagram and my first month I’ve pushed myself to read in a long time! I actually set myself a target of reading one book a month as I’ve always enjoyed reading but never found books I love or I was too lazy to look if I’m honest. But I promised myself I’m going to make time for myself daily which involved reading and here we are 13 books later 🫣 I am so shocked I’ve done it but I’m keen to put no pressure on myself or others. I’m sure there will be some months I will only read one. 5 Stars ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I loved this book. It was action-packed and wildly amusing. I went in knowing nothing, and that was the best way to read this book. The beginning is confusing, but in a good way that makes you want to know what the heck is going on. There are murders, secrets, and rivals and it is absolutely twisted. I love that the MC is given several different hosts, and is forced to combat their individual personalities, it adds so much depth to the mystery and adventure. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Have you read it? ✌🏻for Tuesday, ✨ library tbr edition ✨ Listen, I love the library as much as the next bookworm. I work out of the library all the time, because I love the peaceful, quiet atmosphere. If there’s a specific book I really want to read, but have not yet purchased, of course, I’ll go check it out. My struggle with the library is when this happens: I go browse one aisle, and suddenly I have 10 books checked out that I’ve never heard of, that I am now dying to read, when I have a million at home I should read first. Who can relate? 🙋🏻♀️ I found these two on a pass through today and I am shooketh. First, The Unseen World by Liz Moore. Her book Long Bright River lives rent free in my head for all time; there are no words for how much I love it (I should make a post about it at a later date). But I didn’t even realize she had two older books published before LBR; the library had one of them! I must read it! Please See Us by Caitlin Mullen: I’ve never heard of this author, but wow does this book sound incredible! Missing girls? Atlantic City? A tarot reader with disturbing visions? I’m so down. ❓ What was your last unexpected library gem?
I recently read in Atomic Habits by James Clear about the two minute rule. I had a great ah-ha moment and wanted to share. He begins with this— “We are limited by where our habits lead us. This is why mastering the decisive moments throughout your day is so important. Each day is made up of many moments, but it is really a few habitual choices that determine the path you take. These little choices stack up, each one setting the trajectory for how you spend the next chunk of time.” “Even when you know you should start small, it’s easy to start too big. When you start a new habit, it should take less than 2 minutes to do.” One of his examples of scaling down a habit to take less than 2 minutes is “do 30 minutes of yoga” becomes “take out my yoga mat.” I really related to that. It’s tough working out at home and for me, yoga is a home practice. I love that, although it is harder these days with two little boys 🫶 I decided to shift my mindset to “just stretch for 5-10 minutes” vs “let’s do yoga for 20-25 minutes.” With my old mindset, I was failing almost each time I would get on my mat because I wanted a 20 minute chunk of time but was lucky to get 10… especially uninterrupted 😂 All this to say, start small. Read just a page and before you know it, it’s 5. Starting somewhere is the key to getting started. And for me, I’ve been more consistent in my yoga practice after changing my mindset to a smaller and more achievable amount of time. Anything after that is a bonus 🤩😂 I definitely recommend the book. It’s probably nothing you haven’t heard before, but the way he packages his thoughts and ideas really clicked for me so had to share in case it can help you too 🙂🫶 Happy reading! 💖
