Back at Columbia University again - but this time with my 9 year old son Aydin - to support the amazing (and what I have witnessed repeatedly as only) nonviolent, peaceful, love-filled protests. I spoke to Aydin about the fact that he, like me, is genetically, ethnically, and religiously the combination of Muslims, Christians and Jews, simultaneously the heir to both Arab Nationalists and anti-colonial leaders and holocaust survivors, and thereby, that he is proof that peace can exist, because he himself is it in bodily form. We stood a long time before the main gate speaking with The Orthodox anti-zionist peace activists. Sadly, the only non-peaceful and intolerant thing we heard was an angry Zionist Jewish person who tried to provoke them, screaming “Shame On You!” at the exemplary anti-Zionist Jews, who were peacefully assembled and only smiled in response. While we spoke, our children smiled and joked together. Their desire to be free, to play with each exuding from their bodies, bursting with hope for humanity. They just want to be free to live as one. And they would if we only let them.
