This is a public service announcement: The snail artist has claimed the chonky star! 😆 • When I started my art account I focused on paintings a lot more. They took weeks and months to finish, and I did sell few to very nice homes 🙂 But mostly they just sit on Etsy, and the more I think about it, for the amount of work that went into them (because I’m a good old perfectionist 😅) and what I feel comfortable pricing them at, they are just not worth selling. Especially when I might not make many more. A small 3” simple outline design inspired by Vajnory ornament of Slovakia. I varied the thickness of the strands, which is barely noticeable, and used 3865 floss instead of pure white - it gives it muted and vintage look. I was worried it might be too simple, but now that it’s done I think it works. How do you store your WIP’s? I usually find a suitable vessel and put all my floss colours for that project in, along with some beads or paint. I’m still alive biiishes! 😆 • Just been feeling low, and highly unmotivated for all of this ridiculous living 😅 But I keep going 🤪 If I’m quiet on here, I’m just having some nice, sometimes sad, “me time” 🏖️ 😀 • I’ve been switching gears to work on my book in the mornings, and I’m making sure that the embroidery is not going to high jack that effort again. In the past, the idea of the art biz would take me away from writing, and created an identity I did not fully align with. In a way, I’m lucky that nothing ever “took off” and made me ridiculously busy. The whole unsuccessfullness of it helped me not to care much about followers, or algorithms, and I also got tired of trying to figure out embroideries that might be “popular” and sell. It just got a little overwhelming, so the best thing was to step away from it for a while, and let the writer do whatever it wants! Which it did! 🤩 • I’m happy to report that the identity transition is going well. I feel more of a writer again, I’m reading lots, and I’m working on a chonky sci-fi outline. The book is a stew of 3 different, but connected stories, and I know it will be a lot of werk 🫠 Soon, a huge cork board, and index cards and strings will come out, like in a stereotypical crime investigations. This is actually not a joke 😆 • I decided that the embroidery will be here for fun! 🥳 I will keep the shop, and add my creations, be chill about posting, make more gifts, stitch more of crazy husband doodles 😆, maybe make stitching instructions, so I don’t have to do all the work 😄 But I will not push it to the point of a burnout again. I have blasted through this chonky book in just 4 days 🤩 Thank you @doctorchrisvt! It was a fascinating read, and made quite an impression - so I want to dedicate today’s post to spread the word! If you are curious about what’s in our weird “food” and how it affects our health and our planet, and how shady companies are fighting to keep selling it to us, then this book is for you! 🤪 Uneasy but an essential read. • It wasn’t surprising to find out, that there’s lots of nasties in the highly processed food, and learning a connection between slimy molds and filler gums didn’t gross me out as much as it probably should’ve 😂 But learning about how most of the ingredients haven’t been tested properly for safety, and about the damage to the environment, native cultures, plastic pollution + crazy lawsuits these companies take part in, just to hold onto profits, was where it got to me 🤨 • We try to eat relatively healthy because of our ongoing fertility problems. But this year we decided to get even better, because we don’t have many years left for success, and cook from whole ingredients and be more veggie. This book has helped to strengthen that resolve, and I’ve now became a food label investigator 🔍 👀 I’m not sure I’m keen to do a 80% UPF (ultra processed food) diet experiment as the book suggests, and I’m sure I would feel like a 💩 if I did 😆 I’ve done that kind of eating when I lived in the UK and I can recall quite well how I felt & how depressed I was. • However, for me, I think the biggest motivator is that I don’t want our money to go to greedy companies that knowingly feed us crappy foods, and lie about it, while destroying the environment. Happy New Year 2024! This year we stay cool and classy 😎 • Usually I write some kind of thoughtful New Year essay, but the standards are slipping, and I just cannot be arsed this time 😆 • Something new I would like to start on here this year however! …is to create a weekly conversation around a different topic! You can join in when you feel like it, or don’t. I will be here anyways, rambling to myself throughout the year. We go funny, we go sad, we go deep… nothing is sacred, and we do not fear the feels… 🤨 • And if you are curious as to why, well, I’ve made some very close new friends on here, which I’m so grateful for, and that only happened through open and honest deep conversations. World needs more of them. We go through the same difficult things in life, but we make them secrets and taboos, when really they don’t have to be (unless you did crimes 🤣) They are what makes life what it is. They are part of us. And we need to embrace our insides more *squish* 😆 • So, since it’s Week 1 of the year, let’s kick off with the first topic: Yearly challenge! I’m not talking about resolutions. I’m talking about a hard, chizzled in stone, badass challenge you’ve set for yourself that is ideally a daily affair! 🤨 • It should be pretty simple and do-able, easy for the first half of the year for sure, to make it a habit. Some examples include: walking certain number of steps or stairs, no phone time, affirmations, daily skin care routines, journaling, meditating, relaxation, reading - anything, but making it small and still challenging to keep going all year. It’s not too late to set one now if you’ve got the sudden urge! • I decided to do a squat challenge 🤨 I still need to figure out the math, because I don’t want to end up with 300+ squats a day in the last few months of the year, but I still want to reach decent numbers to get the buns of steel 😏😆 • And I will be reading the Daily stoic. I’m loving all of the art vs artist posts from everyone. I’m one of the stubborn ones - I don’t do trends - I prefer to complicate my life instead! 😀… so I gathered all the art completed in 2023 (minus few items sold or given away) and decided to do a group photo! 😎 • Stats are looking good… I completed most art this year, and almost every project was new to figure out, which adds to the creative suspense 🤨 I’ve got about double the amount of wip’s in different stages of completion and I have to remember that too… 😅 • From a business perspective, it was a sad year for the snail artist 🐌 I have only sold few things, and if it wasn’t for the support of my husband, I would be a little skeleton artist, already starved to death ☠️ 😆 • But it’s ok, it’s the reality of the process of growing as an artist, and I make no secret of the fact that I can make very pretty art, but I’m currently very rubbish at selling it 😅 • There’s a little voice at the back of my head that tells me that this is exactly how it should be, because I need to realize that I’m putting lot of hard work into wrong places. I always think I have sooo much time to plan for the New year, but it always sneaks up on me so quickly 😆 • I used to be crazy about planning, the new beginning, it had to be THE perfect plan! It never works out, your plan can only be as good as who you already are in all your lazy and procrastinating glory 😅 • Of course I still plan. Everyone needs renovations and upgrades 😄 but I also plan for the failures, and prepare for the plan not going to plan at all…because life is weird, and you can’t predict what is going to happen. And you won’t magically be a completely new person from the 1st of the new year. You have to layer the good shit on, year by year 😎 • These days I kind of set the “theme”… It’s a much softer approach. And I re-set the course based on what worked and what hasn’t for me in the past year. Soooo… the end of year project plan totally went out of the window when I was picked as a juror for a trial. I did not plan for a crime time in December 🤨 • While we are never allowed to talk about the case, the judge wanted everyone to know that serving as a juror is an awesome thing to do, and everyone should do it 😄 If you are someone with anxiety from unusual situations like me, you will not enjoy it so wholeheartedly, but now that it’s done, I’m glad I did it, and had this very unique life experience. • But I’m glad to be adjusting to regular life! Christmas came so quickly for me this year, and I missed all the excitement of the build up to it. The Christmas baking battle plan has been completed! 🤨 For just 2 people I do seem to bake a lot of cookies 😅 but I like a selection, just like it used to be growing up. Everyone you would visit had a different assortment of baked goods to offer, and sometimes you would get a takeaway pack too 😀 I usually give half of my baking away, so don’t worry about me too much 🤣 • I calculated my ingredients and already got most of them, and baking shall commence pretty soon around here! 🤩 • I highly recommend the book Advent by Anja Dunk. It’s such a cozy Christmas book even just to look at, and reminds me a lot about Christmas at home. There’s lot of similarities between all European Christmas traditions and recipes. This year I’m trying Hazelnut lemon hearts from the book for my “something new” cookie. There’s 4 staple cookies that I always have to have, and the rest can change yearly. All together I make 7 or 8 types of cookies for Christmas and mince pies and Christmas pudding for husband. 👻 Happy Halloween! 👻 • I may seem excited, but to be honest, I would be quite happy to spend it with my googly eyed pumpkin muffin, just doing art this year 😅 • It might be a bit of a crime to say this, but… I’m not really feeling it this year 🎃 • I never had this fun holiday growing up, and I embraced it after moving to Canada (husband didn’t 😆) but it really works best when you are a kid, or have kids. I’m not in either of these categories & just sit somewhere awkwardly in the middle, being a weird cat lady, feeding stranger’s kids candy 🤪 • Without kids, it is only half the fun. So I think it’s ok not to enjoy it every time. Or not to participate, if it makes you feel more sad than happy. This year, it kind of feels like a chore. • But, I already got my candy! 🍬 And I got it early! It was a good idea to ditch the embroidery I no longer enjoyed working on, because I’m absolutely loving the replacement! 😍 The peach background and pink colours, plenty of stem and leaf therapy, shiny features! ✨ • I’ve just completed all the greenery, and I hope the rest will go just as smoothly.
