Please disregard loose threads etc all will be tidied up; I was just excited to see what it would look like after thinking about it so I used a clothespin to attach . Only 71” more to sew together and the borders are assembled, ready to be ironed and sewn on to the edges. Lots of scrap fabrics! Of course I had to stop because my sewing machine decided to jam… and just before it jammed, my spool of thread completely ran out and I would’ve had to change colour so I took that as a sign. I spent a few hours working on this today. I painted out the first breaching whale who just wasn’t working and put in the new guy in consultation with the whale researcher herself. I was so grateful that she had time to speak with me on the phone and give me feedback about what she sees. She actually wasn’t bothered by the old whale. She said it looked like a calf to her because it was small, apparently (this was news to me) calves look exactly like the adults they don’t they’re just smaller versions. Anyhoooooo I wasn’t happy with the composition and spent a lot of time looking at it backwards upside down and in black-and-white and I think now it’s working better. It will look good or better when it’s in a very bright place because it’s a very dark painting except for Janie Wray, who looks like an angel in the light. I got some feedback from an interesting group on Facebook where you get actual criticism. It was really helpful. So I did a little bit more work on this piece and I do think it’s better now although I still might do more. I’m waiting to hear back what else they find wrong with it lol - it’s been really difficult to get this work to be where I want it to be. I don’t think it’s quite there yet but it’s getting there. It’s a portrait of Lisa Mintz with endangered brown snake, chimney swifts and fragrant sumac ( and a red fox for colour) and represents la falaise St Jacques. I took some fabric scraps I was given and up, cycled them to make a leafy border for one of the pieces for #voicesforthwwild. It took me three hours to cut all the leaves and sew all the pieces yesterday. I hope to get back to the studio today to add the border to the edges because the artwork is 60 x 56” so quite big. I will leave the topic on garnished because that will be attached to a foraged piece of wood for hanging. These are the kind of things to keep me awake at night thinking about how I’m going to handle the way I want things to look. I’m pretty happy about how the textures look together in the end.
