Joseph Beuys was a German artist who is regarded as one of the most influential figures in contemporary art. Joshua tree bioart restoration project in full swing! This long term experimental work is to develop a protocol for the CA department of fish and wildlife to have better success for transplanting trees into damaged areas. To do this, I am working with a community of multidisciplinary artists, my students at Reed College, mycorrhizal fungi, nurse plants, and waste materials. We are growing compostable planters to reforest burned habitats and give those little seedlings a fungal boost. My previous years of work with desert fungi coming in handy! In restoration work the transplant success rates for Joshua trees are sadly low (less than 10%). But we have hope with these new mutual aid transplant systems that we are developing! Bright Lights of the Forest • Koalas are the stars of the eucalyptus groves. They shine bright & are at risk because of human made factors. The neon lights surrounding this Koala represent the human influence, both good & bad, that are affecting this vulnerable species. Koalas are soft & sweet. They also have great big teeth & a bark that scares away predators. Like all of Mother Nature's creations they contain a balanced multiplicity. Koalas were my favorite animal as a child. It started as a toddler with a fuzzy Koala pencil holder & a Koala shaped backpack that my sister had the good fortune of picking up with our ma from Toys-R-Us before she lost custody. I am not sure where I got the pencil holder from, some forgotten foster home or maybe a box of donated toys. It did not really matter, they were both wonderful. We tucked the fuzzy pencil holder into the pouch of the Koala backpack & pretended they were momma & joey. Later, as a teen, I embroidered a Koala on a pillow in my home ec. class & wrote a speech on them in speech class which I illustrated with poster sized drawings. That’s when I learned that Koalas are protective badasses while being sweet/soft. I also learned how Koalas struggled to survive deforestation, wildfires, disease, & cars in their forested homes. These sweet badasses are surviving among factors beyond their control. I found this very compelling. As a teen who could see only the vague outline of a better life at the end of an abusive childhood I could relate to the Koala. As an abused child I kept my sweet/soft side towards the surface as a way to make friends & allies. My sister & I were known as polite & studious kids. To my mind this helped us survive as adults rewarded us with food and/or freedom throughout the school day, both things we were lacking at home. Meanwhile, on the inside, I was a big toothed, loud barking creature waiting to get out. Out of my home, out of the act, out of my angry mind. Just like the tough Koala. The #bristolbroadmeadow boxes are turfed and the meadow is starting to put down roots. Plant close ups are of Common Vetch (Vicia sativa), a member of the pea family and has pinkish purple flowers from May onwards. Did you know? Giuseppe Penone is interested in the relationship between man and nature. To create "It Will Continue to Grow Except at That Point," the artist attached a metal casting of his hand to a young tree in 1968. He returned 35 years later and took a casting of how the tree grew around the metal. My “prayer flag” banner fell apart by the time spring came, just as I hoped it would. The fabric faded and became so soft after months of exposure to the elements. Rainwater and snow transforms. So I’ve taken it apart and I’m making new pieces to hang outside and continue their evolution. (ongoing) Experiments in ongoingness: Location One Format One: materia prima Studio experimentation 4: Imprimatura Part 3 Once the earth tones have been laid down, the imprimatura moves to the diad or triad, in some cases split complementary colours to the natural hue of the subject and the imprimatura. This corresponds to James Elkins’ writing on the Alchemy of Painting "In painting, this materia prima is the full chromatic spectrum of the palette in all its force and incoherence" (Elkins 2000:52-53). In this instance I opt for shades of violets and purples instead of the expected complimentary reds to the greens of the foliage. For me violets and purples has always signified decay. Doesn't everything in nature take on a slight Violet tinge once decay sets in? "The alchemists’ interest in putrefactio is shared by contemporary artists, many of whom see something beautiful in natural decay. " (Elkins 2000: 54) Elkins’ investigation into the alchemical materia prima and how it relates to decay bears strong connections to Anna Lowenhaupt Tsing's research on decay as it relates to mycelium. This is a concept I look forward to exploring in my theoretical research. Created using the most recent data, the installation portrays the frequency of boil water advisories in Broward County during the months of February and March 2024. LIVE ON AIR! I’ve just finished a live interview this morning on @harrogatehospitalradio where I was asked why I create my form of environmental art. I explained to Mark, the radio presenter how this particular piece is meant to shock the audience. It’s similar to my previous “Tree of Life” collage, but this time I’ve added pieces of plastic bag, sweet wrappings and a torn piece of bin liner to create an uneasy reaction. Plastics are really harming nature. I explained how my interest in the environment started as a young child when I liked to clear parks using a litter picker. I became a volunteer for 2 @nationaltrust sites and later an ambassador for @thetreecouncil. My next hope is to become involved with @nationalhways and their “Lend A Paw, Bin Your Litter” campaign.
