Started long in 2 1/2 foot of water with soft pellet and fishery micros using a Tn f1 wire, managed around 5 fish for 10lb in the first hour while I primed a shallow line down my left hand side. Dropped in shallow for 2 small f1s which wasn’t great so had a drop in the edge for a decent f1 but things were quiet on all lines. Managed 3 fish short in the last 30 min with maggot and micros using a Tn f1 carbon for a thanks for coming. Maggots 🪱🪱🪱 Not just a ‘beginner’ bait……..personally we think this type of bait is massively underrated, underused and undervalued. One of the ‘natural’ baits available, different colours suit different approaches such as bronze / copper for river fishing to red / white for still water fishing. There are different ways of using maggots, and the numerous ways to present them on your fishing method / rig such as straight on the hook to being included in Spod mixes and feeders. I really can’t praise the double maggot technique enough and actively encourage my boys to use this when maggots are involved. They really are a F1 / carp-catching wonder bait! Obviously the variety of fishing baits available suit different styles and methods and some baits perform better than others, not dissing or ruling out other baits such as pellet and fishmeal base products as we’ve been successful on them too, but maggots have never let us down and so far, almost guarantees us to catch a fish. A simple small handful of maggots really can bring back life into your swim. Maggots are such a versatile baits and they can be use plain or boosted, dead or alive. Dead maggots can be a deadly option and will still deliver the fish on to the hook. There are various bait additives that you can mix with maggots to give that additional ‘edge’ such as krill meal and probably the most classic maggots powder additive, Turmeric as well as other powdered base groundbait. Today I went to partridge for the 5th round of the individual league I drew peg 123 which has been good of late but there are some good pegs in the section aswell. I’ve set up 11m to the island in 3ft using the same rig down my left hand edge both fishing and feeding maggots, 16m towards the bowl in the middle fishing and feeding maggots, a track rig at 5m for maggots and a rig at 13m on the slope fishing 4mm expander and a bag em 4mm expander on the hook. Also I’ve set up a dobbing rig for bread and maggots. First 30 minutes I tried dobbing but just got pestered by silvers. Then I went across 11m on maggots once again getting nuisance fish. So I’ve tried down my margin at 13m and 2 f1s but then foul hooked 3 and lost them. Then after that I couldn’t get a bite off that line so I went 13m on my pellet lad and ticked over catching the odd f1. With 90 minutes to go I’ve gone on my 16m and started catching steady and decent size f1s. Last 30 minutes I’ve gone short and had a few more f1 and a couple of skimmers. I’ve weighed 58lb which has won the section. So with one round to go I’m leading the league on 7 points and a decent weight so hopefully I get a good draw in 2 weeks when it’s the final round. Well done to all framers and section winners. If you’ve been out over the weekend hope you’ve caught a few. Brilliant bait off Gary as always from absolute angling. 4th round of the individual partridge winter league. I have drawn peg 115 on covey 5. I’ve set up 2 lines at 11m in 3ft left and right fishing and feeding maggots, a track rig at 5m fishing and feeding and a shallow rig with a 4 x 10 strung rig set about 3ft. First hour I’ve tried my 11m lines and just got bitted out by small fish which was the same down my right edge. Then for the rest of the match I’ve fished shallow at 5m getting steady bites. I’ve weighed in 79lb to win the section and 4th overall. This has put me on 6 points in total with two rounds to go so probably in the top 3 I won’t know for sure until results come out. Only one outing this weekend I went to newbridge for the winter league I drew peg 3 which if I’m honest I thought I might just be off the fish. I’ve set up a rig at at 16m on the deck for fishing and feeding maggots, a dobbing rig at 16m for dobbing bread and maggots and a strung out shallow rig set 4ft deep for fishing maggots incase they wanted to come up. Also I’ve set up a rig at a top kit plus one on maggots Infront of me. I started dobbing on bread and missed a couple of bites so started pinging maggots and had a decent f1 and changed to maggots on the hook. For the next 4 hours I’ve stayed shallow swapping between 3ft and 4ft just changing rigs. Last hour it has gone iffy and couldn’t really catch shallow so I’ve gone on the deck and had a decent f1 and a tench. Last 15 minutes I have gone shallow again and had 2 small f1s. It was very close between me and ste Lacey on peg 1 who has caught shallow against the aireator and fished a really good match. Ste weighed in 70lb 3oz and then I’ve put my fish on the scales and they have gone 70lb 3oz so we have been joint first. I’ve lost a few fish but so has ste. Round 3 of the partridge individual league I drew peg 19 on willow which can be a nice peg but more in the summer months. I’ve set up a dobbing rig for dobbing bread and maggots, 3 lines in 3ft 13m left and right and 11m infront of me, fishing and feeding maggots against the island at a line at 7m into the bowl. First hour has been steady catching 4 f1s to the point of the island dobbing. The second hour I had 6 f1s dobbing at 11m and lost a carp between my keepnets for the second day in a row! Bad angling. 3rd hour I’ve gone on the deck at 11m and it’s been solid I’ve had 9 f1s but then it just completely switched off. I kept rotating lines for the next two hours but all I could catch is roach. I’ve weighed in 64lb some huge f1s to win the section. So that puts me on 5 points with 3 more rounds to go. 3rd round of the cunneries teams of 5 winter league. I was put on 19 hawk, I’ve never been on this lake but I knew it is shallow and a lot of gudgeon. I’ve set up a 3 lines at 11m infront of the reed beds left and right, a line straight infront of me at 9m, I used same rig to fish down the left margin. A dobbing rig and also a rig at 5m all on maggots. First hour got bitted out dobbing. Then for the next 3 hours I’ve rotated with 3 across lines and margin getting the odd bite but had to keep moving due to silvers coming over your bait. Last hour I’ve fished down the track and had a steady run of f1s. I’ve weighed in 66lb and 3rd on the lake with peg 1 and 4 having 90lb each which I couldn’t have caught. Liam fell on peg 1 has fished a mega match dobbing and won the match outright well done mate. Team wise we have come back with 18 points to win the day and puts us front in the league. My rotation was for High and Arles, with only one peg left in the bag on Arles I was hopeful to draw on High Pool…. Peg 6 on Arles it was. Kept things really simple tapping in maggots on a couple of lines around the ice. With a more positive line loose feeding in open water. First hour went okay managing a few fish around the ice, before it started shifting. I then decided to drop the ice breaker into it and tie it off to a tree to stop it moving back. After this it was a struggle for bites, had odd fish here and there but no real runs. Finished the match fishing around the ice sheet tapping in maggots. At the all out I’ve managed 37lb 8, enough for 3rd on the lake and a section win 🏆 Happy with that from there to be honest, hard day but managed to do okay in the end. First round of the cunneries winter league today with absolute angling team. Team draw was decent overall but myself and Mike didn’t have the best of pegs. I was on 22 kestrel I’ve set up 5ms with maggots, 16m on maggots both on the deck. Also I’ve set up 2 rods one for fishing the bomb and bread. My second rod was a waggler rod to hook maggots. First 30 mins I’ve fished Bomb and bread for nothing. Next 30 minutes I’ve fished the waggler and I’ve had 1 carp and a f1. Next 3 hours I’ve fished long but just couldn’t string fish together and getting a few skimmers which isn’t a great sign. Last hour I’ve come short and had 8 f1s but only very small stamp. I’ve weighed in 28lb for 8/10 on the lake which I’m gutted about tbh. Looking back I’m not sure if I should have loose fed with a catapult with it being so deep or fished a heavier float to get it down quicker i thought 30lb would of been a good weight but it’s fished really well. As a team the lads have done great and had 2 section wins, 2 5ths and my 8th got us 20 points for second on the day as a team. Having a night in yesterday I decided to fish the open at blundells fishery. I haven’t been for well over 10 years so before I went I spoke to Chris Weeder to give me an idea of what was needed. I drew peg 15 on trio not where I wanted to be I’ve set up 13m on maggots, 5m on maggots and a bomb rod for bomb and bread. I started the first hour on the bomb and bread for no indications at all. For next 4 hours I’ve fished 13m catching small skimmers and an f1 but just couldn’t get a run of bites even off the silver fish. Looking around no one was catching around me so I decided to go short for the last hour and I’ve had 2 f1s. The last 10 minutes I’ve started getting like bites and lost an f1 foul hooked I’m sure they have come off the bottom. I finished the match with 15lb and the section was won with 18lb so abit gutted but was nice to go to somewhere different. Today WO1 Roberts and Cpl Imeson both visited a wet and windy Spalding and fished the River Welland that runs through the town centre. To start off they both fished pinkie over ground bait. WO1 Roberts moved in to his hemp line later in the day. And Cpl Imeson started feeding red maggots with the same on the hook. Both methods produced a better stamp of fish. Even though they he venue was in flood and the water was towing through most the day, it has fished really well. December round of the newbridge winter league I’ve drew peg 26 which is a consistent area so was reasonable happy even do yesterday there was a blank off it. Kept it simple with my set up a rig at 16m towards the island fishing and feeding maggots in 3ft, a dobbing rig for dobbing maggots and bread and a line at 5m fishing and feeding maggots. Also I did set up a 13m line feeding nuggets of bag em xp groundbait with the odd pinkie and maggot mixed in. I’ve started dobbing for the first hour and have a decent size f1 and a small chub. Second hour I’ve fished on my groundbait lime just to try and put fish in the net but got pestered by tiny fish. Back to Shearsby for the 3rd and penultimate round of the Mini Individual Winter League. It was my turn for Hurricane lake, at the draw I picked out peg 17 which is around the middle of the lake. Set up 2 short lines at different depths, an edge line, a 11m and a 13m line plus a feeder chuck across. Caught mainly on maggots in spells on the 11m meter line until the last couple of hours when 13m lines kicked in. Only 1 bite short but picked the odd fish on the feeder while resting the pole lines, the pole was the best method by far today. Ended the day with 95lb to win the lake. Saturday I was at newbridge for the winter weight league. I have drawn peg 4 and with Lee ganderton on peg 1 was always going to be tough to beat. I’ve set up maggots at 5m and 13ms. Also on my 13m set up 2 shallow rigs at 3ft and 18 inches. Did set up bomb and bread which did end up in the tree twice so didn’t bother with that. I’ve had a lovely day fishing 13m switching depths catching 6 f1s, chub and ide. Last 10 minutes I’ve gone on my 5m line and had a tench. I’ve weighed 39lb 4oz Lee has weighed 39lb 14oz well done mate. I finished second and a good weight for this month. #frenzee #maggotfishing #bagemmatchbaits

Today I’ve fished newbridge fisheries for the winter league. I’ve drew peg 23 got to my peg started to set up and realised I forgot my top kits so had to drive home and get them. Was ready about 30 minutes after the all in but just kept it really simple and fished maggots to the island at 16m and maggots at 5m. I’ve basically fished 16m all day catching the odd f1 and the odd carp. I’ve weighed in 42lb to win the match and boost my weight up on the board.
