I’m trying something a little different for carrying my IFAK when I’m working OT supplementing our patrol dudes on the road. Instead of a Fanny sack, I opted to carry chest seals, gauze, compression bandage and an emergency blanket in my cargo pocket. In an attempt to minimize the footprint, I flat folded the compression bandage and arranged everything else so it can be stored with the chest seal wrapped around them. All the contents were then vacuum sealed in clear packaging and tear open points were made and marked by glow in the dark tape. To keep the package as small as possible, I secured the edges with 100 mph tape and dog eared the end and marked it with more glow in the dark tape. I’m pretty sure I can get it even smaller with different stuff but this is what I had on hand at the time. I’m curious to see how everyone else is doing it. BASELINES The academy is where baselines are established. There, the foundation for success is laid. Upon graduating, it’s up to the officer and his/her agency to build upon their skills. We’re happy to hear often that police academies are giving their recruits some sort of active shooter training, to include some discipline of Close-Quarters-Clearance (CQC) more often than not. This particular academy in New Jersey gets one full week of CQC training. Prior to that, they receive several days of stop-the-bleed training on top of their regular first aid. The recruits are issued training tourniquets at the beginning of the academy, which they are required to carry on their duty belt at all times. Toward the end, they are given realistic training scenarios that encompass their CQC skills and their stop-the-bleed skills, amongst other disciplines. That particular part of New Jersey’s police academies are all teaching the same style of CQC in an effort to get all agencies in the region on the same page. This is imperative during large-scale incidents where multiple agencies would have to come together to accomplish the mission, such as an active shooter event. HYPOTHERMIA: Hypothermia is the decrease in body temperature. Even a small decrease in body temperature can interfere with blood clotting and increase the risk of bleeding to death. Casualties in shock are unable to generate body heat effectively. Hypothermia is a problem for casualties with hemorrhagic shock, even with warm, ambient temperatures. A lower body temperature may not be an indicator of hypothermia; it may be due to exposure to a cold environment. Know your environment. Different mission sets require different attire. What feels like 55° on land may feel like 35° out in open water. Having a sound understanding of how to layer appropriate clothing could prevent hypothermia due to exposure to a cold environment. On the other side of the coin, blood loss can also cause significant drop in body temperature. Keeping the patients body heat contained after stopping the bleed is crucial in these situations. Using the patients clothing to keep them warm even after trauma stripping them may help. If it’s a police officer, consider reapplying their body armor to contain some of their body heat. CURVEBALLS: While participating in active shooter training, these officers were given an unexpected “downed officer” scenario mid-run. The “downed officer” was moved behind cover and concealment and treated by a fellow officer while two additional officers provided them with situational awareness and lethal cover. Having the ability to get the downed officer off the X and also provide life-saving interventions sometimes means that your team must have sufficient personnel to continue pushing forward toward the threat. I don’t like having an IFAK attached to my gun belt for the simple fact that I might not be wearing one if something happens and I need to rapidly respond. I can easily throw my @emdomusa Recon Waist Bag over my off duty rig and go to work. This a great option too if your agency doesn’t allow you to carry a belt mounted IFAK. VEHICLE TAKEDOWNS: In today’s climate, it is sometimes safer to think outside of the box and take “time distance and cover/concealment” to an extreme by waiting a subject out and taking them down away when they aren’t within reach of the comfort of their home. These takedowns require a lot of discipline, as there are a lot of angles to cover and a lot of room for mistakes to be made if this particular discipline isn’t practiced regularly. Some variable can include, but aren’t limited to: position of the vehicle, front/back/side approach, environment, and number of occupants. ⚔️ Got a chance to take the family up to Niagara Falls where we spent a few days camping and hiking around the area on both the US and the Not US side. I’ve been using an OG Kit Bag from @hillpeoplegear to carry essential stuff like medical items and my gun. The Kit bag is awesome but I needed something that blended in a little bit more. I recently picked up their Belt Pack hoping that’ll fit that need. It’s essentially their Kit Bag but in a waist bag configuration. I opted to carry it cross body like all the cool kids were doing, no cap, FRFR. Here’s what I carried specifically for that trip. I couldn’t always carry my gun but I still had my knife, Streamlight Microstream USB light and the bag itself (think old lady swinging her purse around).
