Pittsburgh has a lot of public steps — more than any other city in the United States, over 800 sets of them across the city. Some are part of sidewalks, others signed as streets (with intersections!), with a few providing the only access to given residences. While they may not be used as frequently as the days of the masses walking to factory work, for locals they provide vital connections between neighborhoods and friends. Unfortunately many of the concrete structures of the stairs are well past their serviceable life, and we are slowly losing these connections as pieces fail, with many past the point of band-aid repairs working much longer (check the last photo - yikes!). In 2017 the City of Pittsburgh's Department of Mobility and Infrastructure did an extensive study and subsequent City Steps Plan and there have been marked improvements to the situation since, even if it resulted in official closure of some deteriorated stairs. One can hope that when infrastructure week finally lands on the national scale the city can fully fund and get on top of preserving and rebuilding the stair network for the next generation. #stepsclosed #pittsburgh #pittsburghsteps #stepsofpittsburgh #cityofpittsburgh #pedestrian #mamiyaflex
