Do you know the story behind these pieces by Margaret Tomkins? This group of works from the 1940s-1960s were pulled from the artist's sketchbooks. You might notice the charred edges on a few of these. Several of them predate a devastating studio fire in 1959. The fire unfortunately destroyed much of Tomkins' early work as well as that of her husband and fellow artist, James Fitzgerald. We are thankful that some of these small gems survived. Works on paper as well as several large-scale paintings by Margaret Tomkins will be on view through September 17th as part of our Northwest Influencers Exhibition.

Margaret Tomkins was a force within the Northwest Influencers community and a catalyst for the first artist-owned gallery in Seattle. Her surrealist works earned her considerable national attention during the 1940s and as her work evolved in the 1950s and 1960s, she came to be known as a pioneer in Abstract Expressionism. Margaret Tomkins “Untitled” 1960, Oil on canvas, 67.5 x 67 inches Margaret Tomkins was one of the leading painters of the Pacific Northwest. She is best known for her Surrealist works of the 1940’s that earned her numerous national and regional awards. In the 1950’s and 60’s, her work evolved into an abstract expressionist style that she continued to develop throughout the remainder of her career. We love it! Mirroring the visual language of the paintings on the wall are a robust collection of bronze sculptures by #MargaretTomkins and her husband, #JamesFitzgerald. The couple produced works in wood, clay, and bronze out of their eventual home/studio on Lopez Island. Their funkier sculptures were a creative jumping off point from their painting practices, while ceramic works served as supplemental income. We cannot wait for you to see these important, gorgeous works of art in person. Pictured: Margaret Tomkins “Untitled” 1963, Oil on canvas, 28 x 22 inches Though she worked alongside the male-dominated Northwest School artists, Margaret Tomkins declared herself completely separate from them. Tomkins was included in national exhibitions of new American abstraction throughout her career; she was a major force in the history of post-war painting. A mid-career Tomkins’ oil on canvas showcases her seasoned aesthetic. Light pinks, sage greens, Naples yellow, ochres, and indigos fill the frame with consideration and spontaneity at once. A mashup of lush strokes and palette-knife-applied bounty exists between landscape and dreamscape in “Untitled” of 1963. #margarettomkins #northwestinfluencers #housewrightgallery #abstractexpression #womenpainters
