Fighting poaching - the upside…! Combatting the plague of illegal gill netting and saving our threatened ecosystems is not all bad news. It gets people talking and co-operating. In the last 6 months on the Lower Orange we have engaged with other operators, lodges, government officials and even private security firms. Everyone wants to protect our waterways and understands the importance of joining forces. In the Richtersveld National Park, South African rangers drive up to 2 hours into Namibia before they can get on river and take part in joint operations with their neighbouring counterparts. On Pongola dam landowners and stakeholders have formed a cooperative body and all sit around the same table to discuss conservation issues. We support all these hugely positive initiatives with hard earned Rands. This year our annual Charity event held in Dullstroom, raised R448 K. A handful of our top clients are invited to fish our private waters and countless amazing prizes and auction items are up for grabs to raise funds for, what we hold dear, namely; anti rhino poaching in the Kruger park and fish tagging, research and conservation on the Orange and Pongola. Orange River Netting Illegal gill netting on the Orange River is on the increase, that there is no doubt, some sections worse than others. What might have been the odd farm hand or goat herder supplementing their diet has become full scale commercial harvesting by some. We simply can’t sit back and watch this destruction of one of our favorite ecosystems. We have recently equipped the Richtersveld National Park Rangers with over R60K worth of equipment to improve their effectiveness in the field. From Jim Green Ranger boots, back packs, webbing, waterbottles, sleeping bags, tasers and torches, so that they may be more effective in their fight against poaching. The funds are raised through our annual Charity flyfishing event (link in bio) in Dullstroom, where our top clients are invited to fish our exquisite private waters to raise money for conservation causes close to our hearts. Anti poaching teams have been working hard on the river since December of last year and we can’t wait to see Mother Nature bounce back. Now heading into our third year of tagging and research on Pongola Dam, we've had 7 recaptures to date, two of which happened during the 2023 Tigerfish Bonanza. The most recent, landed by the same boat as in the Bonanaza - "B-span" on 27 December 2023. Tigerfish 1163 remarkably travelled to the other side of the lake, which is a total of at least 24km. This individual had been tagged for almost a year and a half before it was recaptured. All three tigerfish were released safely back into the water. Reflecting on the 2023 Richtersveld drift trip season brings a mix of cherished moments and challenges. The season kicked off with a bang as the river swiftly recovered from the floods. In those initial three weeks, the water levels dropped and clarity improved daily. The excitement soared as the fishing gained momentum, promising a thrilling season. Unfortunately, our enthusiasm was met with a setback as the upstream dam systems started releasing water, causing a rapid rise in levels and a decline in clarity. In short, there’s no sugarcoating it, the remainder of the season presented tough fishing conditions. Yet, amidst these challenges, our guests persevered, put in the hours and got some exceptional fish. Our love for the Orange River, particularly it's serene and secluded lower reaches where we drift and camp, remains unshaken though. The stars, the stillness, the fact that for 5 days a cellphone has no use other than to photograph the memories of a lifetime. It was a tough season but we also witnessed the river's resilience and how it was beginning to rebound. Increased invertebrate life beneath the rocks, revitalised reed beds and reinvigorated shallows signal a promising recovery from the scars of previous times. Well, that's a wrap! Six weeks with eight anglers per week on what is probably our favourite fishery. This marks our 21st year of guiding on Pongola Dam. We hosted everyone from seasoned veterans to rank beginners, young local enthusiasts to grannies from Great Britain enjoying their golden years. Some of them could only Spey Cast, but let's just say we love a challenge... Our catch returns exceeded 120 fish per group, with multiple double-figure catches. The Spring season record was a whopping 14.1 pounds – lekka Skere! We experienced grand slams and sight-fished bream, fines ran late into the night and we sipped blurry-eyed dawn coffees. We caught chunky pelagic open-water fish while sitting in 16 metres of water, off the sounder. We also nabbed big coloured bream eaters sneaking into water as shallow as 60cm, with our trolling motors. We acoustically tagged the first 18 tigerfish on the Pongola system. In addition, we sponsored lightweight SPF sun hoodies and roll-top waterproof bags for the local SAPS Waterwing team, who tirelessly combat poaching on the lake. Our hearts were touched when a young lady from London witnessed her first wild rhino and was moved to tears. As always, Pongola Dam proved to be a temperamental mistress. We encountered everything from glassy calm waters to fierce gales, with water levels dropping about a foot per week. Why do guides often appear in our photos holding the fish instead of our guest anglers who actually caught the fish? It's a question we encounter frequently and there are several compelling reasons behind this practice. Typically, when pursuing various fish species, guides ensure clients are well-informed about proper fish handling techniques to promote the fish's survival and capture a memorable photograph. In such scenarios, where angling is predominantly done on foot and clients may find themselves in the water, this approach is deemed the safest. However, when it comes to tigerfish, the situation differs considerably. To start off with, we are fishing in blazing heat on hot, hard and dry-decked boats. If the fish decides to give a kick and drop out of your hands by accident and end up on the deck it will cause the fish to lose the slime coat that protects them as well as causing internal damage to the fish. If you've ever caught a tigerfish before you'll agree with us that they have some serious chompers —long, slender, and razor-sharp—which could cause serious harm if the fish were to escape the angler's grip. A mishap could result in injuries, be it to fingers, toes, or even a fly line, leaving them forever altered by the encounter with these fierce predators. In addition, our aim is to minimise the time fish spend out of the water, prioritising their well-being. Hanging over the side of the boat, reviving a fish in waters inhabited by crocodiles presents an unacceptable risk for our anglers. In such situations, we would rather assume the risk ourselves, the fish after all are our bread and butter…! Acoustic Tagging - a first on Pongola. With funds raised from our annual One Fly Charity Event, We have taken our tigerfish tagging and research project to the next level… In the spectacular opening week of our spring season, we began acoustically tagging tigerfish on Pongola. It involves surgically implanting a micro radio tag into the fish which will be recorded should the fish move through a base station gateway strategically placed on the lake system. With time this should shed light on the little known movement and range of our beloved tigerish. To date, we have acoustically tagged A total of 16 throughout the system: 5 in the river, 6 in the river mouth area and 5 on the far side of the main lake in the mountains. In addition, @jonoboultonflyfishing PIT tagged his 100th fish last week. The 5th of which was recaptured by recreational anglers at Nkwazi Lodge, just the other day. What a start! The opening week of our Spring Pongola season was an absolute cracker! We had eight young, keen anglers from the UK all new to tigerfishing, absolutely shooting the lights - out! In total, 103 tigerfish were boated, which included 4, 7 pounders, 2, 8’s and a crowning 9.5 pounder. Not to forget the fistful of hook-bending, wire-biting, finger-burning, double-digit fish that were lost. (The ones that make you come back) Needless to say, celebrations went deep into night and we are pretty confident we have a bunch of returning tiger converts. With multiple generations of rainbow fingerlings going into our waters each season it can be tricky keeping track. We mark triploids by cutting the adipose fins which is an easy visual reference as the fish grows out. One fly charity event We had our annual one fly charity event this past weekend and it was an absolute stunner. Just 35 invited anglers in the morning got to fish the private waters of the Longmeadow farms that have been kept exclusive for many years. The quality of fish that these waters produce is a testament to dedicated scientific management of the farms under the @jonoboulton and the @mavunganaflyfishing team. As a result, many anglers broke their PB's with 4 fish of over 60 cm landed. Fishing was on Walkersons estate in the afternoon, and mother nature played along, giving us perfect conditions on the water. We hope to have raised well North of R200k but will announce official figures once our auditors are done. Funds go towards the conservation of our precious rhinos, as well as the tag and release research program that we are running on Pongola for tigerfish and on the Orange River for both the largemouth and smallmouth yellowfish. We would like to thank every single person who was involved in the event from anglers to sponsors to guides helping out and making this special day a massive success.
