Happy Kerry Wood Day to all of my fellow Cubs fans. In 1998 I was an awkward, quiet, super "non athletic" 8th grader who liked the Cubs, but was more interested in art and music than any sports at all. But thanks to one incredibly passionate gym teacher, his K signs, and one historic game...by the end of May 6, 1998 I was a MEGA Cubs fan. Kerry Wood, many could say, is the reason for my true Cubs fandom, and to this day he is still MY FAVORITE player. 24 years ago today, Kerry Wood struck out 20 batters at Wrigley Field against the eventual NL Central Champion Houston Astros to tie the major league record and set a new NL record. Wood’s performance resulted in a 105 game score – the highest mark of any pitcher in a 9-inning game. Max Scherzer would tie his strikeout record 18 times years later. #may61998 #houstonastros #chicagocubs #wrigleyfield #kerrywood #20strikeoutgame #nlrecord #maxscherzer #may112016 #mlbvault

Cubs fans, as many of you know today marks 20 years since the day Cubs legend Kerry Wood struck out 20 Houston Astros batters at Wrigley. It is hard to believe that so many years have gone by since that sensational day. Many call it one of the most dominant pitching performances ever. The 20 strikeout game set a National League record at the time (Max Scherzer tied it 2 years ago for the Nats) and also tied the MLB record. I was only 7 years old when Kerry pitched that game however I do remember watching it on TV. That was probably one of the coolest things I have ever seen. Kerry became one of my favorite Cubs players after that day and I am sure he is a favorite of many others as well. He has always been a class act. Kerry has done so much for the Cubs organization and from what I recall hearing he is great with fans. It is unfortunate he did not get to win a World Series while he was on the Cubs, however I am glad the Cubs still appreciate all he has done to this day. I hope they retire his number 34 eventually. I know Jon Lester has it right now so it might be awhile. In the meantime, the memories of one of the best Cubs pitchers ever will always be there.I still have a number 34 Jersey T-shirt I got right after that game happened. I'll be keeping it for years to come. :-) @cubs @mlb @kerry.wood34 @wrigleyblog #kerrywood #cubslegend #kidk #kw #pitcher #20k #strikeouts #majorleaguerecord #20yearsago #may61998 #mlb #baseball #cubs #cubbies #wrigleyfield #letsgocubs #history #may #spring
