I went to my first MAG Conversation tonight. It was about Urban Sketching. We learned how to make little sketchbooks out of one sheet of paper (certainly not the first time I've done that, but this one was biĝger!) Then we all wrote "I can urban sketch" on one page and compared styles. Nobody wrote it the same so of coure nobody draws the same either. I managed a very quick, and totally out of proportion sketch while I was there. That's okay. Urban sketching is not about perfection. But I am sorry @pegmeister_art. You are better looking than that! I spent another fun afternoon with the Merrickville Arts Guild's Art Initiative learning to draw with Rachel Houlton. I only heard about this particular class about an hour before it was time to go, so I feel very lucky to have been able to secure a spot. We also worked on continuous line portraits of one another. Today, there was another free class put on by the Merrickville Arts Guild through their Bringing Our Community Together Through Art Initiative. August (Gus) Borghardt was back, this time to teach watercolour. As much as I enjoyed her last class, I had decided not to sign up for this one in order to give someone else a chance. But last night I saw someone post that they had a ticket but could not go. By this morning, it didn't look like anyone had taken the empty space, so I started making inquiries. It was unclear right up until the last moment if there was an available seat or not. As it turned out, the other person had not canceled her ticket so I jumped in and arrived just in time for the class to start. There was a lot of instruction, leaving only a few minutes to actually put all the techniques we learned together and paint a monochrome picture. If you haven't read my previous post, go there first. The second thing I learned today was that when you want to practice urban sketching in Canada when the weather isn't cooperative and you are tired of capturing your indoor surroundings, you can create an imaginary village using an assortment of different shaped children's blocks and some imagination. Today, I attended another free class put on by the Merrickville Arts Guild through their Bringing Our Community Together Through Art Initiative. This time, the subject was listed as Urban Sketching, but it was also very much a drawing lesson. At the beginning of the class, we each received a different picture to draw from, and we drew it 6 different ways. (Line drawing, reverse drawing, continuous line, blind contour, volume, and colour first, line second). This one was actually the reverse drawing, meaning it was drawn with the photo upside down.
