This one is a fairly recent discovery of mine and somehow flew under my radar eventhough this is right up my alley. Cryptic Forest was a side project by members of german viking/folk metal band Finsterforst. Under the name Cryptic Forest they only released an EP and this album called #Ystyr before they put the project on hold. The music is marketed as #Blackmetal but if you expect some "trve", monochrome, lofi shrieks about Satan you won't be happy with this one. Cryptic Forest doesn't shy away from a clear, modern production akin to what Immortal did in later years. They use Keyboards on some tracks- but sparingly to create great atmosphere and incorporate elements that echoe the guitar melodies of classic Heavy Metal or NWOBHM, the skank beats of Thrash and the aggressive pummeling of Death Metal. Is it the most "evil" sounding, dark and eerie black metal album fit for teenage edgelords? Certainly not. But it is very enjoyable and #headbangable heavy. #Blackmetal was one of my favorite genres of music in 2023 according to my Spotify, so let me introduce you to two of the albums they probably mean by that: It's "Autumn" and "Melancholie²" by #coldworld and they are technically within the microgenres of #dsbm (look it up, can't spell it out here) and #blackgaze . Coldworld, which is the solo project of multiinstrumentalist Georg Börner hailing from #Leipzig in germany, also incorporates a vast array of other sounds such as #darkfolk with medieval instruments, #ambient soundscapes and lofi noise elements to create epic, melancholic and sad music. It's the perfect soundtrack for the colder months if you really want to revel in winters blues. I highly recommend this artist and these albums. Anthrax - Vol.8 - The Threat is Real. Okay, maybe it's even the weakest record in Anthrax's discography. It's a great album, as long as you forget we're talking about a band that previously released hits like Spreading the Disease, Among the Living, Fistful of Metal, Persistence of Time and State of Euphoria. It's the Anthrax of the 90's, with another sound, another formation and without looking at its past what we have here.
