We may not have had the outcome we hoped for today- but ended up being lucky just the same. Grady was a little flat and fussy, and turned out to be colicking during his class. A fortunate catch by lynn dombrowski-and the lovely vet from MidRivers Equine Center who treated him immediately. Iโ€™m proud that a sick horse still carried a new young rider through her first National Championship, and that the young rider did a great job of navigating and fixing some mistakes. Most of all, weโ€™re happy Grady is feeling well again, and we live to fight another day, so to speak. CONGRATULATIONS to the winners!!!! #rollwiththepunches #thehorseismoreimportant #luckcomesindifferentways #midriversequinecentre

Mid-Rivers Equine Centre was thrilled to welcome Dr. Julie Klein from Riverstone Animal Hospital this week! Riverstone Animal Hospital is a mixed animal practice, and Dr. Klien is furthering her practice field of equine medicine, so what better place to come than Mid-Rivers? She spent time with several of our doctors, observing and gaining insights into lameness exams, ultrasounds, and 24-hour emergency equine care. We were delighted to have her here and are excited to see her progress as she grows her equine practice. We look forward to providing support for her on this journey! Whether it be advice or just a listening ear, we know that having access to resources is invaluable for any veterinary professional. So thank you, Dr. Klien, for spending the week with us; we wish you all the best! #midriversequinecentre #riverstoneanimalhospital #veterinarymedicine

Tuesday Trivia Answer: What type of equine surgical procedure carries the highest risk of post-surgery complications? Believe it or not, castrations! Despite being relatively common, this delicate operation has a higher chance of difficulties post-recovery. Are any horse owners out there surprised by this info? The most frequent complications experienced after the procedure are generally mild and often subside without intervention; however, more concerning or life-threatening issues such as eventration, hemorrhage, a bacterial infection of the spermatic cord, or peritonitis could occur. Other less severe problems, like scrotal swelling and edema may also present themselves post-surgery. Ever Wonder Why Your Horse's Feet Don't Get Cold During Winter? Horses are resilient in nature, and no more so than when faced with freezing temperatures. Their secret? Blood-shunting mechanisms are built into their hooves that alter circulation patterns to preserve body heat and keep the limbs from freezing despite standing in the deep winter snow! With lower limbs mainly composed of bones and tendons, structures that don't freeze easily it makes the hoof and legs resistant to icy weather. Unlike our own human extremities, which are susceptible to frostbite, horses have evolved extraordinary adaptation tactics for surviving cold seasons. #horsecare #equinevets #MidRiversEquineCentre #hoofcare #instahorse #equestrianlife #photooftheday #positivevibes

White Line Disease: How to Identify, Treat, and Prevent It White line disease (WLD) is an infection found in horses' hooves that can cause severe damage if left untreated. WLD is caused by fungal or bacterial organisms that spread through the white line of the horse's hoof, resulting in lameness and pain for the horse. Diagnosing White Line Disease The most common sign of white line disease is a separation between the outer wall of the hoof and the sole. This separation usually appears as a dark area along the bottom edge of the hoof wall. Other signs include: - Lameness in some cases (based on severity) - Widening of the sole to wall junction. - The inner surface of the hoof wall looks mealy, powdery, or "seedy" Outer surface looks normal. Preventing White Line Disease Maintaining a healthy hoof wall is key to avoiding many common causes of cracking, including: - Substandard quality or conformation leading to mechanical stress. - Excessively wet pastures and/or chronically dry environments. - Horses with long-term laminitis issues. - Poor foot care management practices Treating White Line Disease The treatment for WLD depends on how advanced it has become and how quickly it needs to be addressed. If caught early enough, topical or systemic antibiotics may treat the infection; however, surgical removal of infected tissue may be necessary in more severe cases. Above all else, preventive care is keyโ€”regularly inspecting a horse's hooves for signs of infection can help catch any problems before they become serious issues that require surgery or hospitalization. Take Away Message White line disease is an infection found in horses' feet that can cause considerable damage if left untreated. Horse owners should watch for signs of WLD when picking their horse's feet and with regular inspections by a veterinarian to catch any problems early on before they become too serious. #MidRiversEquineCentre #horsecare #equinevets #followers #equestrianlife #instahorse #whitelinedisease #hoofcare

QUICK TIP: Say goodbye to static-frizzed winter manes and tails! Now, you can keep your horse's hair utterly smooth with a simple solution - all-natural dryer sheets. The positively charged fabric helps reduce the effects of negatively charged hair strands resulting in soft, shiny locks that stay put all day long. Plus, conditioning agents within the sheet help ensure every strand is silky smooth. Have gorgeous horse show-quality tresses in no time without effort โ€“ just one kiss from dryer sheet magic! #photooftheday #equestrianlife #positivevibes #equine #horsecare #MidRiversEquineCentre #quicktip

EQUINE INFLUENZA VIRUS (EIV) During the winter, your horse's risk of developing respiratory issues becomes increasingly likely. As temperatures get colder and horses spend more time in enclosed spaces, their airways become dried out, which weakens local defenses against pathogens that can lead to infection or inflammation. Equine influenza virus (EIV) is a common, highly contagious equine respiratory disease. Recognizing the signs of EIV is essential for keeping them healthy this winter. #horsecare #equinevets #MidRiversEquineCentre #respitoryhealth #equine #equineinfluenza

QUICK TIP: Ground feeding is a simple way to reduce back strain in horses who suffer from chronic issues. Rather than haynets or raised methods of feeding, encourage a more natural healthy posture by feeding on the ground or using slow feeders that keep the horse's head and neck lowered for comfort and put less strain on a horse's back. #MidRiversEquineCentre #equinevets #horecare #instagood #horsecare #equestrianlife #mrec #quicktip #horsehack
