This pretty girl and I entered our first online show today! It was just a walk-only pattern from the ground (and thank God for the “walk only” part - do you all *know* how short I am?!), but it was a really good place for us to start. I love the low-pressure, low-stakes, super relaxed atmosphere of these online shows. I wanted to be as true-to-show as I could, so I gave myself one practice run and then filmed. It wasn’t perfect (there was a barking dog that prevented Magic from giving me her best stretchy free walk), but she really tried. She’s come a long way in just a few short weeks! Our goal for next month is the ridden tests. Koda went to his new home today! We have had Koda since early 2022 when he came to us very underweight and very mistrusting of humans! He spent time with Amber at @wildhorsediaries learning to trust and get over some food aggression and resource guarding before getting back under saddle and gaining confidence. He originally went to a home with a super supporter of the rescue but she decided she needed something with a little less motor. She ended up adopting miss Dixie who has been a perfect match! Here is something we were not prepared for today. Andy had to drive the tractor into the back of the horse paddock. The tractor hasn’t been in the horse paddock since October 6, the day of Jay’s death. On that day Andy worked all day with Flash by his side to take Jay to his resting place. We didn’t think about this today, until Flash got very agitated on seeing the tractor. He needed a lot of distraction to allow it through the gate, and he was stressed, galloping, kicking, approaching the tractor to sniff at it, follow it, and block its progress as it got closer to the spot where Jay’s soul left his body. Last summer and many times in the past, the tractor’s been in the paddock and Flash has had a mild mischievous interest, and he’s seen the tractor drive past his paddock a million times, but this was not that. I stood with him and talked to him about how much we both loved Jay, and how nothing bad was going to happen today. I can’t describe the expression on his face; it was human grief. We shared breath and he eventually became more relaxed. We decided to take the tractor out of the paddock, and I stayed with him for a bit to make sure he was okay. Flash is a deep and special horse. But he’s not the only one who feels grief; all of our residents react to the loss of a loved one. Cows grieve; pigs grieve; goats grieve. Horses grieve. As the man said, the question is not can they reason… but, can they suffer? Every time I think I know enough, understand enough about our residents to be fully present for them, they show me a new, deeper knowledge. I grieve with Flash. I still can’t talk about Jay without bursting into tears a good 50% of the time. rolling out of bed on a Saturday morning, drinking my coffee, doing chores, and enjoying every second of it. I had someone tell me “oh it’s just a hobby” and while that really bothered me, it’s true. But it’s a hobby that drives my passion, gets me out of bed on the bad days, and a passion that knows no calendar or clock. A hobby that you can’t pick up and put down depending on the day of the week or time of year. A hobby that requires constant attention, thought, and planning. A hobby that is the basis of several professional careers in the equine world. I’ve had to do chores in 60 mph winds, snow, rain, while I was sick with COVID, etc. I’ve had to make choices that killed me on the inside but were necessary for my animals. The ever important job of getting fresh water for their working horses. Since the new water company opened most stables no longer have fresh water meters. So we see a constant flow of carts coming to fill up fresh water throughout the day. This is hard work for them and all have easy access to salt water. So this means most do understand the importance of fresh water. Beau (pictured left) was foaled in 2021 and is available as a project horse. He knows the basics; halter, lead, load, and stand for the farrier. Waylon was foaled in 2018 and is considered green. He has been under saddle and needs time to build his skills. He needs someone who is a confident rider and who can continue his ground work. This is Horsey, we just had to say good bye to him in February boy we loved this guy. He lived to about 38, we got to enjoy over 20 wonderful years with him. He was one of 15 found living in their own facies. We were lucky enough to welcome him and another to our home. It’s National Help a Horse Day, which always makes me think of the incredible staff and volunteers of 13 Hands Equine Rescue. This extraordinary place is helping horses heal from such difficult circumstances every day, and they do it with fierce respect, love and joy. I’ve often shared that one of the things I believe makes 13 Hands so special is that the 100+ animals living there all know that they are safe, and that palpable sense of safety creates a ripple effect on all of our nervous systems, even for the humans. While the heart of that safety is the reverence that the caregivers here have for the animals, it’s also inspiring to see how once they feel safe, the horses offer so much care to each other. The horses in these photos both arrived to the rescue with significant neglect and injuries. The mini's name is Morgan, and he often has the run of the farm. Right away after arriving he received such huge amounts of love and care, and quickly got stronger and healthier. Once he did, one of my favorite things to watch was how he would visit the other horses that were struggling, especially Triple King. While Triple King was recovering from injuries (and getting healthy enough to be gelded) he was in a paddock on his own, but thanks to Morgan I don’t think he was lonely. Both of these horses are now physically and emotionally strong. Triple King is part of a herd and has more friends. Morgan still roams the farm offering support where he’s needed. They know they are cared for, and they care for others. Including offering such loving care to many of our retreat participants. Humankind is tremendously indebted to horses, and in ever changing ways they just keep on giving. Mama Horse & Her Baby Saved From Kill Pen Now Face The Consequences Of Their Abusive Past... Young foal, Pippin, came into the world under the most dire of circumstances. Born in a kill pen, her mama, Annalise, had been so horrifically mistreated that she was unable to produce any milk for her newborn. Knowing the urgency of this desperate situation, we rushed to their aid and transported them immediately to the hospital. Had we not gotten to them in time, this mama and her baby could have been sent to slaughter. Both mama and baby required life-saving emergency treatment. Annalise is receiving medication and hormones to help her milk production so she can care for her baby like she desperately wants to. Pippin herself is a little fighter, just like her brave mama! When we arrived at the hospital, Pippin had no glucose and was dangerously dehydrated. She has a great suck reflex and the desire to nurse, but she was very hungry! Because Mama hasn’t had any milk to give, Pippin needed 2 bags of plasma, a tube feeding, diagnostic testing, and wound treatment for a cut on her leg. Additionally, the bumpy ride to the hospital caused Pippin’s umbilical cord to bleed, requiring sutures. We are still concerned about her hydration and glucose levels but we are also watching her creatinine levels. They were a bit high, likely due to trauma during birth. It is nearly impossible to avoid infection after being born in a germ-filled kill pen, so we have started Pippin on antibiotics as well. Annalise and Pippin will likely require several days of hospitalization, but we are critically low on funds and supplies and urgently need your help. Paris is a beautiful mare with nice gaits and an athletic build! She is brave through obstacles and thrives off of having a job with clear direction. This sweet mare loves living outside. Being in the barn can be unsettling. It all sounds different, and she can't see what's happening. But in the arena, she's pretty chill. We worked on learning new corrective exercises together. I had NO IDEA how this was going to go. Turns out, it was easy peasy. She didn't hesitate at all. Have you ever wondered why some horses wear horseshoes and others don't? None of the Sanctuary horses wear shoes (not counting booths for injury relief), and we know that wild horses don't - so what is their purpose and why don't we use them? The answer is surprisingly simple: they don't need them. Horse hooves are complex, but we will simplify it here (see next pic for a basic anatomy). The outer part that we see, the hoof wall, is hard and made up of keratin, which is the same compound our fingernails are made of. However, underneath the hoof, there are the sole and the frog. The sole is more concave and is quiet soft, also made up of keratin. The frog is quite squishy and is the part of the underfoot that can come into contact with the ground and receive sensory information and aids in circulation. Although it is also made of keratin, the frog is softer than the wall because it has a higher moisture content. The hoof does get trimmed a bit while walking, but will need regular trimming by a farrier, including the frog. So, horses that aren't shoed or sometimes referred to as 'barefoot', are so because they don't need them. Sometimes, hoof injury and damage can result in a farrier being unable to put a shoe on. Other times, the horse isn't being 'worked' enough to require them - it's just like us wearing shoes or going barefoot. Horses that are ridden hard, ridden on hard surfaces or pull heavy loads tend to wear shoes to prevent the hoof wearing down too quickly and causing damage, particularly to the frog. Wild horses wear their hooves down slowly just by moving throughout their day. So our horses here at the Sanctuary don't need them. A few have hoof problems and they aren't in 'hard work' so they're not wearing their feet down too quickly. No need for them to have them. Hope this clears it up a little for you! It's a question we get quite often!

Good morning from Momma Mo and her baby girl! Mo started out as a temporary foster here at IFS, and ended up a foster failure--we just fell in love with her! However, our sanctuary's mission has always been geared towards saving animals that are farmed for food, so Mo was our only horse resident. We had been casually hoping for a friend for her, but to no avail. So Mo quite literally made a friend! She will be a lone horse no longer, and she'll never be separated from her sweet girl. What an exciting day at the sanctuary! First of all, it is our co-founder Jered's birthday today! He does so much to create a welcoming space for humans and animals alike, and we are so happy to celebrate him today. 🥳 But Jered's isn't the only birth being celebrated! Our beloved miniature horse, Mo, has welcomed a precious new addition to our sanctuary family. That's right – Mo is now a proud mommy to the most adorable baby horse! 💚 Mo came to us in June from a petting zoo/hobby farm in Wisconsin, and she must have been impregnated shortly before her rescue. Besides a little bit of weight gain over her time with us, we were none the wiser to her pregnancy! Jered sure was surprised to find an extra resident when doing his morning checks in the barn. He and Shawn moved both mom and baby into a stall in the medical wing with a heat lamp, and they have been doing wonderfully. The new little girl is very curious and adorably wobbly on her feet. Mo is being protective, but seems excited to show off the result of her hard work! We are always so excited to have births happen at the sanctuary. We love knowing that these sweet babies will never experience any harm or hurt, and will be loved unconditionally. Congrats, Mo, and happy birthday, Jered! 💚 #IowaFarmSanctuary #CompassionLivesHere
