Mi Pueblo (Novato) A couple from our church in Santa Rosa like to ride the train to downtown Novato, so they asked to meet up at Mi Pueblo on a Monday. I hadn't been there in a very long time, so I was curious how it would be. My husband and I were excited to see birria tacos on the menu, so we ordered that and a wet burrito supreme with al pastor (roasted pork). Both were excellent - the meats were flavorful and cooked perfectly. I couldn't find any guacamole in the burrito, so they brought us a side, no charge. The wife of the couple got a vegetarian burrito on a spinach tortilla, and the husband had a variety of tacos, as well as his first birria taco, which he said was the best ever. They go to Mexico once a year and are Mexican food lovers, but I think tend to stick with what they know. Service was great - personable and prompt. I liked our comfy, cozy booth with a close-up view of the fountain and the cute patio. A group of Novato police officers were having their lunch out there, so we chatted with them on our way out. I will definitely be back!

Throwback Tuesday: "¿Es esta comida un reto?" FOOD CHALLENGE WIN RESCINDED On January 14, 2010, I completed the Abuelo Macho Burrito at Mi Pueblo Novato (Taqueria Mi Pueblo III) in Novato, California. This was my fourth food challenge win ever. The burrito was 20" long and about 6 lb., but I did not get an official weight at that time. It was listed as 8 lb. Being listed as a challenge on a food challenges website at the time, I still asked the restaurant if it was still valid. The waitress did not speak English, so I spoke to her in my rather poor Spanish. I asked her: "¿Es esta comida un reto?" 'Is this meal a food challenge?' She said yes in Spanish. Then I asked her how long I had: "¿Cuánto tiemp tengo?" She said, in Spanish, that I had as long as I want. I also saw previous winners on the Wall of Fame, so I was pumped So I ordered the burrito. It came with unlimited nachos and salsa. It had the usual ingredients like rice, beans, cheese, guacamole, sour cream, pico de gallo, meat, sauce, etc., but I was able to substitute Parmesan cheese for whatever cheese they usually used. I had failed this challenge five days earlier, but this time I was determined, and finished it in about an hour (I didn't keep official times back then either). I became their first female winner ever! But when time came for my reward (free meal and pic on the Wall of Fame), I still got the check, for $19.95 plus tax. I asked why, and they said the challenge had ended, and now this was just a regular menu item. I was not happy, but I paid the bill reluctantly. At the time, I still counted this as a win, because I had gone there thinking it was an official food challenge, and I fought hard to succeed. I would have been not happy to not have this not count. But I a few years ago, I decided to officially rescind this as a win. I just happen to be announcing it now.
