Tara Wilson’s signature wood-fired ceramics pieces draw inspiration from the human form and natural world, creating tablewares that are the perfect blend of form and surface. Her beautiful dishes are currently on display in the latest Radius Clayworks exhibition, “The Artful Table,” through Saturday, June 1st. “Embodied in my wood-fired vessels is the serenity I myself experience in a rich natural environment. My surroundings provide a calm physical and mental space that allow me to relax, contemplate, and focus on the important details of my life: the great outdoors, the company of my dog, the beauty of making pots on a daily basis. I hope my pots also offer their users an opportunity to recognize the important things in their own lives, as quiet pots initially speak softly yet reveal complexity in both form and surface through continued investigation and use.” — Tara Wilson Tara is a studio artist living in Montana City, Montana. She has given lectures and workshops throughout the United States and her wood-fired utilitarian work has been exhibited internationally. When not working in the studio she can be often be found in the south hills on her mountain bike. Tara set up her studio in Montana City after finishing residencies at The Archie Bray Foundation and Red Lodge Clay Center. She currently has a train and a catenary arch wood fire kiln, a Heinz 57 beauty, a very needy mouser, as well as a few chookies. Want to enhance your own dining ambiance with dinnerware created by Tara? Order your own set of dishes for only $100/month! Molly Berger’s gorgeous tableware sets show the presence of her touch through delicately hand-built plates, bowls, vases, and mugs. Adorning the tables in Radius Clayworks, Molly’s work is elegant and eye-catching in the exhibition, “The Artful Table,” on display through June 1st. “Fingerprints mirror brushstrokes, giving both form and surface to the object. The work is simple and unhurried, made through a slow, delicate process of pinching. It revels in the touch of the human hand.” — Molly Berger Molly is an artist, potter and designer living and working in Denver, Colorado. She has a BA in Integrative Arts with a concentration in Psychology from Pennsylvania State University. After getting her hands in clay she quickly fell in love with the medium and began pursuing a career as a full-time artist. Molly completed post-baccalaureate studies at the University of Colorado Boulder, and has been an artist-in-residence at Anderson Ranch Arts Center and Carbondale Clay Center, a coordinator for the Artstream Nomadic Gallery, and a 2016 Black Cube Artist Fellow. She received her MFA in ceramics at Cran brook Academy of Art in Michigan. Molly has shown both her functional and sculptural work nationally and is rigorously committed to both these aspects in her studio practice.  Want to enhance your own dining ambiance with dinnerware created by Molly? Doug Turman works from a place of instinct and spontaneity, coupled with a masterful command of mediums and a light-hearted regard for art history. In his paintings and prints, thought, impulse, process and psyche unite in effervescent compositions that are both playful and deeply felt. We have been thrilled to have Doug’s work in our current exhibit “Each Bright Galaxy,” on display through May 25th. “Observing Turman’s paintings ... it’s striking how clear his ideas are, how unobstructed and available they are, and also how they build on one another to offer a complex, interrelated whole. A series of aphorisms or maxims present themselves: 1) small things matter, 2) little things can carry big ideas, 3) a sustained practice adds up, 4) art is available for everyone, 5) one person can do many different things, 6) the artist gives his viewer permission, 7) these pieces are accessible yet sophisticated, 8) art can be fun, and 9) while each piece has a lifetime of skill and art historical knowledge behind it, the viewer can absorb it immediately. It is amazing how Turman communicates all of this in very short order.” — Brandon Reintjes, Senior Curator, Missoula Art Museum Doug Turman was born in Seattle and raised in Missoula. He received his BA in Art from Oberlin College and an MFA from the University of Montana. He worked at the Phillips Collection in Washington DC before heading back west to pursue his career in painting and printmaking. For 18 years Turman and his wife Mary Lee Larison ran Turman Larison Contemporary, a fine art gallery in downtown Helena. In 2016 the Holter Museum of Art in Helena hosted Here and There: An Italian Journey, a solo exhibition of Turman’s work tracing the influence of his many trips to Italy where he and Mary Lee actively conduct workshops featuring painting and cooking. See Doug’s work on display in the gallery! We’re open Tuesday- Fri (11am - 6pm) and Saturdays (11am - 3pm). Live outside of Missoula? Courtney Michaud’s stunning functional pottery is intriguing in both shape and color. Her work is accessible yet complicated made with the belief that how a pot feels during use creates an intimate moment of synchronicity between a thing and a person. See Courtney’s dinnerware sets on display at Radius Clayworks in the exhibit “The Artful Table.” “By bringing my ceramics to a table setting, shelf or hand I create pieces that can unassumingly shift sentiments and awareness. A pot can comfort, mark occasion or become intertwined with a life. My pottery reflects moments when I’m surrounded by nature and feel singular in the world. Wide horizon lines, vibrant or subtle skies and natural patterns translate through color and shape. Simple incisions invite the hand and soft rims support the lip. Sleek and assertive forms provide a canvas for color and draw the eye. A love of Modernism and industrial design contrasts natural influences, simplifying forms and streamlining silhouettes.” — Courtney Michaud Courtney is the Assistant Professor of Ceramics at Western New Mexico University. Originally from New York state, she has an MFA from Pennsylvania State University and a BFA from Alfred University. Making and teaching in the mountains of southern New Mexico, Courtney strives to incorporate the natural environment, ceramic history, and contemporary art in her studio practice.  Want to enhance your dining ambiance with tableware by Courtney? Dana Boussard’s paintings, drawings, and silk scarves grace the walls in our current exhibit “Each Bright Galaxy.” Dana’s complex compositions weave together two elements central to conscious living: natural beauty and human sorrow. Her work finds a harmonious balance of the personal and political, coalescing into symbolic imagery that resonates in ways at once is enigmatic and profound. “In my practice, current events and social issues often provide the spark that ignites whole compositions-imaginative environments that are at times lush and inviting, at times fraught with chaos and hostility. Personal stories of home and relationships intersect universal stories of invasion and politics, each merging into dynamic visual narratives. I find my inspiration through the process of drawing: it is the solitude of the studio that gives rise to all the work that follows, regardless of the medium I choose.” — Dana Boussard Dana is a nationally renowned artist with artwork in the collections of private, corporate and public buildings throughout the country. She has an active studio practice as well as a long career in public art. Her large-scale work can be seen in the Anchorage International Airport, The Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, Holy Spirit Catholic Parish in Great Falls, and many other venues. Dana is a recipient of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Florence Trust in London and the Western States Arts Federation. She has received the Montana Governors Award for the Arts and the Fine Arts Outstanding Alumni award from the University of Montana. Dana is a vocal supporter of the arts, and has lobbied in Washington D.C. for the NEA. She continues to remain excited about art and maintains her active studio on a sixty-acre ranch 20 miles north of Missoula.  Stop by the gallery to see Dana’s work for yourself before “Each Bright Galaxy” closes on May 25th! Stephanie Seguin’s beautiful hand-built dinnerware sets and vessels are featured in our current Clayworks exhibition, “The Artful Table.” Her porcelain and stoneware dish sets are bound to elevate any dining table— see for yourself, on display at Radius through June 1st! “Dualities and boundaries are my greatest source of inspiration. How can minimal become excess? Where does a reference become a connection? When does nuance become novel? These instigating questions establish a relationship with viewers of my work and create a cyclical rhythm of thinking, acting, and viewing. I have an idea, I make my idea, I see my idea. Viewers look, stay, and contemplate. It’s a flexible relationship that can be momentary or enduring.” — Stephanie Seguin Stephanie is an artist and educator based in Helena, Montana. She received an MFA from Pennsylvania State University, and a BFA from Minnesota State University, Moorhead. Born and raised in the Minneapolis area, Stephanie used her ambitions with clay to work at various production and educational studios across the US and abroad. Stephanie was a long-term resident artist at Carbondale Clay Center, and has taught community and academic classes at Penn State, Colorado Mountain College, Western New Mexico University, and elsewhere. She is currently the Education Manager at the Archie Bray Foundation.  Want to enhance your dining ambiance with dining sets of Stephanie’s? Commission your own set of dishes for only $100/month! Goedele Vanhille’s intimate, abstract bird sculptures grace the gallery in our current exhibition, “Each Bright Galaxy.” Her ceramic and bronze pieces are breathtaking as can be, with carved surfaces and intricate forms that catch the eye and pull at our heartstrings. “These last few years I have made a journey into what it means to be human, with all its complexities of emotions, feelings and contradictions. This journey has inspired my recent explorations of surface, space and form. In the landscapes and canyons of the human heart reside the “Birds of the Inner Heart.” They are travelers from other worlds, unchained spirits, messengers and survivors. In this series of work, the form is activated by the surface; I am mesmerized by how a single line can bring a form to life, a line that contains the rhythm and soul of the piece, a line through space, a three-dimensional line. I keep on listening, responding and learning -applying what I know, remaining curious and willing to go out on a limb.” — Goedele Vanhille Goedele has been making sculptural clayworks since she was twelve years old. After finishing college in Belgium with a degree in Ceramics, she came to the Tuscarora Pottery School in Nevada for a four-month clay-intensive program under Dennis Parks. Once back in Belgium, she made functional work to be sold in shops around the country and created sculptural work for exhibitions. Goedele returned to Tuscarora for another summer of study, and then attended Paul Soldner’s special student program in Claremont, California. She moved to southwest Colorado, and for the last 33 years has maintained a ceramic studio and raised a family. See Goedele’s impressive bird series part of “Each Bright Galaxy” at Radius through May 25th. Live outside of Missoula? Kelly B. Justice’s bright and cheerful functional ceramics have been an eye-catching force in this year’s 9th Annual Ceramics Invitational. Each of her artworks carefully pieced together with decorative slipcast porcelain panels, are a true delight— see them in their final week on display at Radius Clayworks! “I find alluring shapes, patterns and textures in all kinds of things: vintage glassware, old light fixtures, plastic food canisters, silicone mats for rolling out cake fondant. Through the processes of mold- making and slip-casting, I alter these objects and compose them into new forms. Using intensely colored porcelains and glazes, I superimpose patterns over textures and contrast glossy surfaces with sensually smooth matte finishes. The bold surface imagery—floral motifs, sunbursts, geometric and radial designs—paired with the symmetry of the forms, serves to elicit a sense of lightheartedness and play, abundance and multiplicity. I create vibrant wares, confident and assertive, designed to brighten the living space and add a bit of joy each time they are used.” — Kelly B. Justice Kelly is a full-time practicing artist in Rochester, New York. Originally from Marion, Arkansas, she received her MFA in Ceramics from Alfred University. She has been an artist-in-residence at Genesee Center for the Arts and Education in Rochester, where she later worked as the in-house Ceramic Studio Manager. Her work has appeared in group and solo exhibitions throughout the country.  See Kelly’s wonderful ceramic work on display in the 9th Annual Ceramics Invitational before it closes on April 27th! Her delightful ceramic pieces have made themselves at home in our 9th Annual Ceramics Invitational, on display through April 27th! “My work is inspired by the emotional impact of collecting objects— why we collect them, and the significance of the ones we choose. I celebrate the domestic home and the integral use of nature within our living spaces. Throughout my art career I have added light media into my work. I have always been impacted by light and how it affects the world around us. More recently I have rediscovered how important it is to my creativity and mental health. My lamp series reflects my interest in domesticity while concurrently showcasing the importance of sunlight within our spaces and our lives.” — Kate Schroeder Kate is a ceramicist and professional artist residing in Kansas City, Missouri. She earned a BFA in Sculpture and Ceramics from the University of Central Missouri and an MFA, also emphasizing Sculpture and Ceramics, from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Debra Oliva creates colorful, functional ceramics that utilize decorative elements such as form, line, color, and pattern. By incorporating these details, she aims to covey a quiet yet strong temperament in her work. Her visually captivating ceramic pieces can be admired in our 9th Annual Ceramics Invitational exhibit! “Much of what I create has its roots in the utilitarian pottery tradition where functional concerns are paramount. However, it is my belief that aesthetic considerations and functional concerns should share equal importance. Achieving a good balance between the two is my challenge. The objects I most enjoy creating are those that beg to live outside of the cupboard as objects for contemplation and enrichment, until called into service.” — Debra Oliva Debra was born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago. She attended Northern Illinois University, earning a BFA in Drawing and Painting. After graduating, she went on to work in the printing industry for more than a decade. She began taking classes at an area potter’s guild and continued her education attending dozens of workshops. She has now been working in clay for more than 30 years. Oliva’s work has been awarded prizes in several national and international shows, and was selected for inclusion in Lark Books’ 500 Pitchers and 500 Teapots II. She maintains a studio at her home in Michigan. Pop into the gallery to see Debra’s bold and bright ceramics for yourself through April 27th! Don’t live in Missoula? Stephanie J. Frostad’s new show “Sustenance,” explores the many sources of nourishment we crave and require in order to truly thrive: the food and drink we need for survival, our personal relationships, the stories we share, the art we create, and anything else that improves our experiences of connection and belonging. Her collection of paintings and drawings are inspired similarly by one of Mary Oliver’s observations— that the world we inhabit also inhabits us. “As a narrative painter my objective is to present the essential elements of a story: a character or two, a sense of place and time, a moment of connection, tension or reflection. I seek figures and scenarios that are both personally compelling and socially relevant. With measures of clarity and ambiguity I hope to create imaginative space for viewers to bring their own perspectives into the tale.” — Stephanie J. Frostad Stephanie J. Justin Paik Reese creates delicately carved and decorated jars that are influenced by memories that straddle the lines of what’s real and what becomes misconstrued over time. Drawing influence from both his Korean heritage and the downtown Neoclassical architecture of Youngstown, Ohio, Justin’s work is a wonderful addition to this year’s Ceramic Invitational exhibit at Radius! “Growing up in a dilapidated town full of architectural genius, and often traveling to South Korea at a young age to visit my mother’s family, my memories offer up a beautiful clash of opposites. Living through the chaos of the 90s and experiencing pop culture through the lens of two different worlds, I find ways to embrace that turbulence and integrate contrasts into my work, evoking thought and question, tugging at the viewer to experience something odd. I am in pursuit of what makes a thing truly memorable, attempting to forge confusion into beauty.” — Justin Paik Reese Justin has a BFA from Columbus College of Art and Design in Columbus, Ohio. His passions and inspirations involve 90s pop culture, retro video game collections, old school sports figures, and architecture, all of which serve to inspire his current work. He currently lives in Youngstown, Ohio, where he has a family and personal studio. Justin fires his work to cone 10/11 in soda-fired reduction inside of a downdraft kiln that he built in 2017. See Justin’s work on display in our 9th Annual Ceramics Invitational through April 27th. Live outside of Missoula? Sarah J. Conti’s incredibly detailed ceramic birds are not only breathtaking in their realism, but also hold powerful messaging about the state of our natural environment. Her birds can be seen taking flight in our 9th Annual Ceramics Invitational, on display through April 27th! “In my sculpture practice I convey that climate justice is social justice. Birds are particularly vulnerable to the deadly effects of climate change; similarly, environmental issues will first impact the most vulnerable humans—those who don’t have the ability or resources to escape impending natural disasters, despite contributing the least to climate pollution. I use birds literally to reference the dangers they face now and in the future, and metaphorically as stand-ins for people to discuss historic and current social issues. Birds have wisdom and warnings to convey if only we can listen.” — Sarah J. Conti Sarah is a ceramic sculptor who is passionate about ecology, conservation, and social matters, as well as sparking conversations about climate change and the impact humans have on the earth. Sarah is from western Washington and received her BFA with an emphasis in sculpture from the University of Idaho. She did post-baccalaureate work at Oregon College of Art in Portland and the University of Montana in Missoula. With a group of four other ceramists Sarah co-founded Wildfire Ceramic Studio in Missoula and ran the in-house gallery. She now lives in Boise, Idaho. See these works in person! We’re open Tues - Fri (11am - 6pm) and Saturdays (11am - 3pm). Don’t live in Missoula? Jill Oberman’s stunning stoneware ceramic wall pieces are currently on display in our 9th Annual Ceramics Invitational exhibit. Her work explores issues of growth, attachment, affinity, opposition, and experience as they tie to ideas of architectural structures. “People universally establish protective structures, both architecturally and psychologically. In exploring ways they relate to one other through these structures, I am investigating the tension revealed in the spaces between and around objects. My most recent work explores the idea of an “absent presence,” where what is most important is perhaps that which is no longer there. This work attempts to express a feeling of optimism and hope through inevitable absence and loss, and to convey a sense that the horizon might be a point of restoration: a space where there is a convergence of expectation, destiny, desire, hopelessness, distance, and vision.” — Jill Oberman Jill Oberman earned her MFA from the Rochester Institute of Technology School for American Crafts, and her BA from Hamilton College in Clinton, New York. She has been a resident artist at numerous art institutions, notably Anderson Ranch, the Archie Bray Foundation, and Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts. Oberman currently lives in Red Lodge, Montana, where she works as Curator and Gallery Coordinator at the Red Lodge Clay Center. Her ceramic sculptures have been widely exhibited throughout the United States. The series is set to launch in 2025 at the Missoula Art Museum. The series will tour across the U.S. in an effort to make an often intangible but urgent concern more seen, felt and acted upon. Kyle Scott Lee’s impressive ceramic vessels grace the gallery walls of Radius’s 9th Annual Ceramics Invitational. Adorned with traditional shapes, abstract design, and vibrant glazes, Kyle’s pieces evoke joy in anyone lucky enough to view them. “My work is inspired by artists Jean-Michel Basquiat and Piet Mondrian. I’m also drawn to principles of simple design with directional fine lines, as well as the freeform movement of abstract design. I like bold color, depth and the imperfection of abstraction combined with traditionally shaped forms that are at once functional and sculptural.” —Kyle Scott Lee Kyle lives in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn, New York.  He creates voluptuous vessels and well-turned cups that provide the canvas for his unique hand-painting and applied surface treatments. For many years Kyle’s practice has included teaching at the Educational Alliance Art School and other institutions. He has studied ceramics in multiple studios throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn, and has exhibited in solo and group gallery exhibitions in New York and abroad. His work appears in private collections in London, Paris, New York, Pittsburgh, North Carolina and beyond. He is a founding and active member of BKLYN Clay and the first recipient of the BKLYN Clay artist residency. See Kyle Scott Lee’s work in person, on display at Radius Clayworks! Her eye-catching work is currently featured in the “9th Annual Ceramics Invitational” At Radius Clayworks. “I’m a first-gen American, daughter of a Turkish woodworker, and was raised in a design-rich environment that has influenced who I am and my current body of work. I draw upon my cultural heritage to bring a unique, imaginative sensibility to my work.” — Didem Mert Didem was born and raised in Cincinnati, OH. She received her BFA from Northern Kentucky University and her MFA from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. Candice Methe’s grand ceramic vessels show the beauty in the presence of the hand. Each one of her detailed, sculpted vessels shows remnants of intention, a deep relationship with clay, and connection to life, both past and present. “I’m interested in the vessel as a metaphor. Having grown up poor, I’ve never been able to let go of function in my work; everything has to have some sort of purpose. But I’m also interested in so much more than the cup, the bowl, the teapot. ... I don’t always start out with a concrete idea; I build intuitively until something starts to happen. It’s a collaboration between me and the material, and it’s through my hands and the quality of touch that I’m able to honor honesty, vibrancy, energy, and humility.” — Candice Methe Originally from Falmouth, Massachusetts, Candice is a studio artist and educator now living in Gerton, North Carolina. She has been working in clay for twenty-five years and has held residencies at the Roswell Artist in Residence Foundation, The Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts, Red Lodge Clay Center, and Santa Fe Clay. She received her BFA in Ceramics and Art History from Northern Arizona University and her MFA from the University of Minnesota. Inspired by historical objects, she has traveled to Japan, Nicaragua and sites across the US to study various practices of clay artisans. In 2016 she received the Warren MacKenzie Advancement Award through Northern Clay Center to travel to Ghana, West Africa, where she studied indigenous clay architecture and learned traditional ways of working with clay. Nina Glaser’s vibrant mixed media mosaics capture the human figure, telling timeless stories to onlooking viewers. Having had a 20-year career as an accomplished, internationally recognized fine-art photographer, Nina now repurposes her black-and-white figures behind colorful stained glass, creating new stories to tell. “My work has always explored relationships—the timeless conflicts and yearnings of human beings. The visual stories I create are allegorical, often inspired by mythologies. I’m fascinated by co-existing realities, contradictions and the tensions they create.”— Nina Glaser Ninas’s work has appeared in dozens of group and solo exhibitions over the past four decades and is included in the permanent collections of UCLA’s Wight Art Gallery, Triton Museum of Art, Yale University, as well as other institutions.
