Wood Rooster . Clay, acrylic paints, foam board . Size (inches): Height 21, width 7.8, length 7.0 . I am a girl born in 2005; therefore, this piece of sculpture represents me under the Chinese zodiac sign of the wood rooster. I developed the project on the wood surface to emphasize the wood rooster characteristics. I created two people— they are both me— because the features of the wood rooster are very much like me. I am energetic and often like to lead an active social life. The strings are not used to show how roosters’ traits manipulate me rather than enhance my connection with the zodiac characteristics. I chose to build the sculpture on top of a lamp so the lighting can illustrate the positive side of roosters, where they are very loyal and honest. I decided to incorporate the RGB light ball into this design because every single color represents one state of my emotion: red-anger, blue-sad, and yellow-joy. Therefore, the shadow reflected on the roster as the light changes color shows how positive character traits can lead me to different stages of emotion. #art #3d #highschoolart #chinesezodiac #rooster #juming

Pointillism and Impressionism When I design and plan lessons, one of my goals is to create projects that can be interpreted in multiple ways. I like to give students multiple options for medium and inspiration, reaching each individuals’ strengths and interests. This project, the work created by these students, I think exemplifies that best. We talked about the impressionist art movement, and multiple techniques that artists used during that time. Students each made a piece that represents their everyday, modern, or leisure life. - We are starting to wrap up our school year with only a few weeks left, and only a few projects left. It’s extremely bittersweet, nearing the end of my first year of teaching. I relate to my seniors reaching their bittersweet end, but I also relate to my freshmen whose first year of high school is almost over yet still with many more to go. I’ve seen incredible moments of growth in these kids, and they’ve seen moments of growth in me too. - the last slide is done by a student who crochets and sells little creatures! they did their painting of a crocheted bumblebee pyramid, with another one of their paintings recreated in the background. i wish the entire world could see all of these kids’ creativity. - #arteducation #arteducator #arteducationmatters #arteducators #artteachers #artteacher #artteachersofinstagram #artteachersofig #highschoolart #highschoolartteacher

Our second Feature Friday student artist for this week is junior Henry Stibitz, who placed 2nd in the Printmaking category. Our final award winner for All State Art was sophomore Ilsa Robinson, whose feature you may remember from Youth Art Month! Ilsa’s Youth Art Month piece placed 3rd in the Sculpture category. My piece, titled “Moonglow,” depicts a small boat sitting on the waves under the light of a nearby lighthouse. I utilized different areas having positive and negative space with the light and dark, and achieved the yellow glow using the chine-collé technique. Happy Feature Friday, Westies! This week we have two more of our All State Art winners to share with you. Our first feature is sophomore Kayla Swazer, whose digital piece, “Don’t Leave Me Behind,” received an Honorable Mention in the Multicultural Art category. Check out these photos of Kayla’s other recent works and the things that inspire her, and hear more from the artist about her piece below. 🦅 . My artwork is an Eyak woman showing sadness and emotion with her tears, to show how she feels about people not knowing her culture, or forgetting. She is wearing her traditional clothing with a beaded headpiece along with beaded earrings. I created this piece by using ibisPaint X. I used a lot of contrast and shading throughout the hair and the face, to show how she’s looking at an angle, and how dynamic it is. I was inspired by my past summer job. I used to work at the Alaska Native Heritage Center, and we had to give tours and talk about the culture and traditions on Alaskan Natives and my piece was focused on the smallest population of Alaskan Natives which was the Eyak. The whole point of this piece is to describe and show emotion on how awful it would be if people would forget about certain culture and plus spread the word about the Eyak culture slowly becoming extinct. It’s gotten so bad that the last fluent Eyak speaker passed away in 2008 and we have yet to repair and rebuild the language. So during this piece I tried to show a bit of frustration and sadness throughout the drawing. My goal on this piece was to spread the word about the Eyak tribe, and how we can still get to know the culture itself, and to not let it go extinct mostly just to spread awareness. I’ve witnessed throughout elders and other tribes about the knowledge of the Eyak which was very little, I want to know more about them how they danced, what they wore, and how they survived this long. 🏅 . . . #digitalart #highschoolart #westhighartak
