We cannot see the picture they are looking at, only the monkeys and their reaction to the artwork. The artist Gabriel von Max (1840-1915) was mainly active as a history painter, but also a dedicated Darwinist, which is shown in his work as a so-called "monkey painter". Von Max lived with 14 of this kind in his villa on Lake Starnberg and observed, drew and painted them. This painting is based on such a study and was combined from several observations by the artist. At that time apes were considered as a "prehuman-stage“ and human were seen as the pride of creation. Von Max view was further developed: He perceived the apes as an acting subject and showed them that way in his pictures. 🖼🎨🐒 Affen als Kunstrichter von Gabriel von Max (1889), Neue Pinakothek, München. Wir sehen 12 Kunstrichter, die ein Bild in goldenem Rahmen betrachten. Dieses Bild können wir nicht sehen, sondern nur die Affen und ihre Reaktion auf das Kunstwerk. Der Künstler Gabriel von Max (1840-1915) war hauptsächlich als Historienmaler tätig, jedoch auch überzeugter Darwinist, was gerade in seiner Arbeit als sogenannter „Affenmaler“ Ausdruck fand. Von Max lebte mit 14 dieser Art zusammen in seiner Villa am Starnberger See und beobachtete, zeichnete und malte sie. Auf so eine Studie geht auch dieses Gemälde zurück, das aus mehrere Beobachtungen des Künstlers kombiniert wurde. Toile iconique de l’énigmatique et intriguant Gabriel von Max (1840-1915) : Les Singes critiques d’Art… qui n’appartient pas aux Singeries acerbes ou aux détournements simiesques bien connus en peinture, mais au cynisme de l’artiste face au refus qu’il essuya face aux jurys du Salon de Munich. L’étiquette indiquant « Tristan et Isolde » et « 100 00 DM » (revers de toile) et la caisse de transport en sont les indices. Il s’ajoute bien évidemment l’interrogation faisant écho aux regardeurs qui font l’œuvre (celle dont on ne voit que le bord du cadre et que les singes voient ou celle que nous voyons là).
