Terra incognita: Abra de Ilog ⛰️ . Dirt roads snaking through rolling hills peppered with palm trees on either side, opening up to a wide view of the ocean, any rider who dares going east from Abra de Ilog is rewarded with breathtaking views. The connection to Puerto Galera is not finished as of today, and what sparse vehicles plying the roads of Occidental Mindoro, there’s even fewer taking this road. The best thing about working weekends is being able to sneak in a mid week ride when there's less tourist traffic. This was my first ride up the front of the mountain to Springbrook National Park in about 2 years as the road was closed for over 18 months due to several landslides. Day 5:6 Sucre to Colchani Refreshed from a day’s rest, excitement fills me as I depart for definitely one of the highlights of this leg of my journey, the Uyuni Salt Flats. Along the way, I pass thru Potosi. I really wanted to spend a few hours there, but the town squirted me out despite several attempts to penetrate. No matter. Potosi was once one of the largest cities in the world. Bigger than London, Paris, Frankfurt at one time in the 16th Century. It all began when silver was located there shortly after the Spanish conquered the Incas, ransomed and later murdered their King. Combined with new mercury amalgamation technology, the world’s richest silver deposit at Cerro Rico changed the financial landscape of the planet. More than 60,000 tons of silver was removed from the mountain and there is still much remaining. It is estimated that almost 60% of all the worlds silver at one time came from this one precious mine. So many indigenous slaves died in the mining operations, the Quechua people named it “the mountain that eats men”. So exploited, pock-marked with unstable mines, the entire top cone of the mountain collapsed in 2011. It’s an unbelievable city with a fascinating history with many implications on the world stage. Of course, all the wealth removed from this land, didn’t create lasting benefit for the local infrastructure or economy. Today, it is a dusty remnant of it’s former heyday. I continue onward, climbing back to the Altiplano along one of Eric Lange’s @Rideadventures top favorite roads of all time. I understand why. The smooth curves snake thru mountains and canyons amidst breathtaking terrain. Alas, I crest a final mountain ridge to see the blinding white of the world’s largest salt flats spread out before me, as far as the eye can see. (Continued in IG comments below)

Day 5:4 and 5:5 - Quime to Sucre + Rest Day A planned long day of riding ahead. I wasn’t originally planning on going to the Capital City of Bolivia, but @oscarofavin and his daughter @adriceci94 convinced me otherwise. And I’m glad I listened to them. My day starts at high altitude in the low 40’s traveling at super highway speeds (now without my moto jacket). Serena’s small cockpit offers little respite. The bitter cold cuts like a knife. Llamas graze disinterested and quite cozy in their woolen fleece as I ride passed. My hands go numb even with the grip heaters turned up to full. After what seem like a freezing eternity, I arrive in the industrial, commercial hub city, Oruro. I need fuel...badly. The first two places I go to won’t sell to me. Not quite yet on fumes, I continue towards Sucre hoping to find a station on the outskirts of town. As luck would have it, there is one and no other customers present. I pull in and the two attendants talk quickly amongst themselves and agree to sell me fuel. And I’m off again. The clear skies and bright sun quickly warm the atmosphere. The landscape changes, becoming more wet as I continue southward. Proper pine trees begin to appear and the mountain twisties thru canyons, over granite monoliths and over rivers bring on the #blissriding. The last few 30 miles into Sucre are simply stunning. The best scenery and roads I’ve found since leaving Peru. A beautifully preserved hotel near the main square of this colonial city is where I’ll be resting for the next two nights. Bolivian independence is in the air. The universities and medical schools pour young, bright students onto the streets, squares and sidewalks. This bustling city draws international travelers, French, Italian, German. Excellent restaurants, microbreweries, coffee shops and art galleries. In the cool evening air, dozens of troupes practice their performances for the upcoming bicentennial celebration of Bolivian independence. (Continued in comments ⬇️)

Day 5:3 - Irupana to Quime. Dust and fuel Awakened by a predawn rooster’s crow and excitement to be on the road, Serena and I get an early start. The suns rays peek over the surrounding mountains. Today was going to be a challenging day. Nothing but dirt roads ascending and descending over 4 mountain ranges. Switchbacks were expected and steep grades. Shelf roads with exposure rivaling the Death Road. A certain degree of fuel anxiety is anticipated adventure riding long distances in remote areas. It’s one reason I carry a spare gallon of fuel. All together, I should have about 300miles range. But Bolivia takes it to a whole new level. First off, there aren’t that many stations. Most villages too small to support a gas station. But here’s the kicker, Bolivia’s gas prices are half that of neighboring countries. In an effort to curb illegal black market exportation across the borders, they have a strict policy in place. It goes something like this: the price is triple for foreign plated vehicles. OK - I’ll pay triple. But they can only officially sell you the fuel if they have access to a connected computer system to log the sale, matching license plate and vehicle make, model, color. Which most do NOT. So I get turned away many times. No matter that I’m not smuggling fuel in my 5 gallon motorcycle tank. The Bolivian gasoline fiasco I know in advance partly from @ourmotorbiketravels whom I met many months ago in Zacatecas Mx. The game is to find a remote gas station without other cars (witnesses) and no cameras. Large town stations are ‘no go’. The attendants smartly willling to take a cash tip, but not if it costs them their job. Either that or I buy dirty gas out from the guy selling out of a 55gal drum in the alley around the corner a couple blocks away. This time I luck out and find just such a remote station in the early morning hours before other travelers emerge. Relieved and filled up with plenty of petrol for today’s trip, we continue onward. (Continued in IG captions 👇)

8/25/2023, 3:13:48 AM

Day 5:2 - Death Road and Blockages. La Paz to Irupana. Blessed to have @oscarofavin join me for the first portion of today’s ride, it’s as if I have my own personal Bolivian moto guide. Leaving in the cool morning of the world’s highest major city, we ascend even higher over a 15k feet elevation pass on our way to Bolivia’s Death Road. Until an alternate trade route was completed in 2006, it was named as the world’s deadliest road, claiming between 200-300 lives each year. Much like Colombia’s Devil’s Trampoline, it’s a bidirectional, one lane road, in some places only 9’ wide. Naturally, Serena and I needed to have a taste for ourselves. Why? Because it’s there. At time’s wishing for obscuring fog and rain contributing to the danger (like a few months ago on the Devil’s Trampoline - Day 4:5), we aren’t spared any relief from the incredibly tempting vertigo. The crumbling edges of the road tumble down over 1000’. The road clinging to the sheer edge rock cliff faces in many sections. Add in a couple waterfalls directly onto the roadway, it makes for an interesting ride. Luckily, good fortune is with us and we arrive safely in Coroico for a congratulatory lunch. Here Oscar and I part ways wishing each other well and vowing to ride together someday. I continue onward towards Irupana. He returns to La Paz via the new safe highway, bypassing the Death Road. (Continued in IG captions ⬇️)

A special mention to my new rear tire! I replaced the Continental TKC80 before beginning the #blackhillsbdrx ride with a Motoz Tractionator GPS to see what it’s like. Usually I’ll choose the Tractionator Adventure or Rallz but I came away thoroughly impressed with the GPS. It handled everything I threw at it in style and is barely worn after thousands of miles ridden on the way home. I suspect it wouldn’t be as good in deep mud and sand as the others but it worked great in the Black Hills and on the pavement. @motoztires you really make a great product! Day 4:25 Puno, Peru to La Paz, Bolivia - The gorgeous sunrise over Lake Titicaca is unstopped by the curtains of my lakeside hotel room. It obvious why the Incas believed the lake was the gateway of the gods here on earth. The high altitude and thin air make the reflected sunbeams more than doubly intense. Serena and I head to the Bolivian border following the easy shoreside roadway. Arriving at the Bolivian border held a bit of a surprise… I had to apply for a visa for the first time since leaving Littleton. They wanted bank statements, accommodation details, departing flight information and $160; all very official. Somehow it was decided my documentation was sufficient and we entered with a shiny new visa, good for 10 years no less. Onward to the lakeside town of Copacabana, I kept hearing Barry Manilow singing (even if it’s not the same Copa). We stop for a lunch of freshly caught trout. Cruising again to La Paz, the scenery is spectacular. The massive lake horizon defined by jagged snow-capped mountains in the distance. After a fun short ferry ride, we make the drive to Bolivia’s capital city, La Paz. Another wonder itself, the bustling city is the highest capital in the world. It also the most vertical city I’ve ever seen. Spanning heights at over 13,000ft, all the way down to the river bottom which is still over 10,000ft elevation the metropolis is impressive. One of its hallmarks is the gondola system of public transportation shuttling people from the surrounding mountainside to the crammed valley below. Harkening back to Day 4:1, Marco @tjofdreams who I met at customs in Bolivia connected me with a great place to stay and the perfect spot to store Serena in the city. I met up with his friend Oscar, @oscarofavin a fellow adventure rider, and felt an immediate connection. Life is so good. #flowstate

Day 4:24 Rest day at Lake Titicaca - This day starts at sunrise to catch a boat for an all day tour of the Lake. Lake Titicaca is a pretty spectacular sight to behold. First and foremost the lake is high at 12,500ft elevation. The intensity of the sun is easily felt at this height. Second, it’s HUGE. 18th largest lake in the world. As the largest lake in South America, it’s larger than Delaware and Rhode Island combined. Nearly 200 miles long, 80miles wide and almost 1000’ deep it spans the border between Peru and Bolivia. The tour’s first stop is the floating island community of the Uru’s. The reed islands they live upon are literal rafts about 3’ thick which they constantly work to keep from sinking into the water below. This indigenous community comprised of over a hundred small man made ‘islands’, houses about a 1000 people. It was wild to walk on these squishy islands which moved on the wakes of passing boats. They have some domesticated birds which they keep tethered by the leg. These birds catch small fish for the islanders. The homes are built upon even thicker rafts of reeds. Each small island is home to a 3-4 families. After our short visit, we then take the boat to one of the several real islands in the lake. It was reassuring to walk on solid ground again. It was a similar feeling to getting off the boat onto the pier after being at sea for awhile in the Navy. There we are invited to lunch with a local family in their home overlooking the lake. Before leaving the island for our long cruise back to Puno, I climb the stone bell tower and enjoy the view. The unsecured bell tempting me. (Continued in comments below)

Day 4:22 Urubamba to Cusco. Leaving the Sacred Valley, we head up into the high country once again to the Incan capital city, Cusco. The hilled city soars more than 11,500ft above sea level. It’s streets and many buildings were built by the Incans. Huge mortarless, stone walls still in use today remain a lasting testament to this once thriving culture. It’s easy to think of the Incan culture being ancient and thousands of years in the past. But it’s simply not true. The Incan’s were conquered in the late 16th Century… not that long ago. They built modern cities with sanitation systems and roadways laid out in a grid. They were knowledge seekers and deeply spiritual. Truly and amazing culture I want to learn more about. See the large the 12 sided stone? The joints are so tight, it’s not possible to insert a playing card. Truly incredible craftsmanship which modernity cannot replicate. Cusco is also known as an artist and shopping mecca. With just a few days and less than 500miles remaining for this stage of my adventure, I indulge myself. The finest alpaca clothing in the world is found here. I purchased some art to adorn my home and remember my trip. Cusco is obviously the cultural heart of Peru in my brief time in the country. Fine restaurants, incredible galleries, coffee shops, fine jewelry, art and culture abound. It’s a beautiful city and I would return again to soak it all in. Got my moto boots cleaned by an insistent shoe-shine and gladly paid him way too much for the effort. Dinner of Alpaca tenderloin was incredibly tender and delicious. Incan spirituality contains three primary figures of the snake, puma and condor. And the hummingbird as a special messenger.

6/11/2023, 4:30:10 PM

Day 4:21 Ollantaytambo to Urubamba - Despachó and humility The sun welcomes me this bright sunny morning and I enjoy another masterfully prepared breakfast by Angela. Afterwards, I prepare for my despacho ceremony with Narciso. Despacho literally translates as dispatch. Turns out my previous day’s intuition was correct and Narciso is a Paqu (shaman). He comes from a puebla way high in the Andes behind Mt Veronica (the prominent snow-capped peak in the pics). Their first language is Quechua, which was spoken by the Incas. A Paqu is gifted with a deep connection to spirit and the ability to heal spiritual and physical wounds. A despacho ceremony is one of gratitude and intercession with the Apu’s and Pachamama (Mother Earth). The Apu’s are the spirits which inhabit the mountains, rivers and lakes. Each have specific traits and nearly all of them are male. However, Veronica is female and the most powerful of the region. She keeps the men in line, so Carlos explains to me. @stardomeperu is situated with the perfect lookout and vantage point to take in all of Veronica’s power and glory. There we perform the ceremony. Barefooted, I spend a solid 2 hours offering individual prayers of gratitude and intercession. Carlos translating my words to Narciso, who then speaks these in Quechua to the Apu’s. Each set of 3 coca leaves is a kind of key which represents a separate prayer. There are numerous sacred objects and symbols included in the despacho bundle, some of which bear some fortune , or future wish, aspects as they are unknown to the Paqu or participants ahead of time. They are unwrapped and presented to the Apu’s and added to the bundle. Ultimately the entire bundle was wrapped up and tied, then burned. Only the Paqu is allowed to watch the despacho burn and it is to be left undisturbed as it’s sacred. We leave the despacho to burn unattended trusting the Apu’s to work out amongst themselves how they are going to fulfill my prayers and fortune. I am deeply moved and humbled by the whole experience. Day 4:19 This was my first ‘true’ rest day since leaving Bogota almost 3weeks prior. Having arrived a day earlier than I originally planned, I spent the day taking in the sights and festivities of Choquekillka. Thoroughly taking in the cultural richness, I imagine what a similar festival in Colorado may look like. Aurora, Commerce City, Lakewood, Boulder, Colorado Springs, Durango, Grand Junction all showing up in traditional costumes, regalia, music and ‘the dance of their people’. Traveling thru other countries on the ground and off-resort, highlighted where the US lacks culturally. The culture of these other communities is one of connection. This echoes my sentiments about the receptionist excited to illegally migrate to the US back in Colombia. All that glitters is not gold. Walking the streets revealed more treasures in the form of alpaca fine textiles, handmade jewelry, hats, and other local crafts. Once again I find myself feeling like Bilbo in Smaug’s lair. Wanting to take all the treasure with me, but my pockets (pillions) are stuffed to bursting seams already. I tried cuy (Guinea pig) for lunch. It’s been on my list of ‘must-try’ foods since entering South America. Considered a local delicacy by many… quite anticlimactic, tastes like chicken/rabbit. I skipped the head based upon advice from a local. After a professional massage, I headed up to my accommodations for the night. The @stardomeperu is a unique hotel nestled 1,500ft above the valley floor. It’s handsome owner, Carlos, is spitting image of Tom Cruise and is a fellow rider himself. The road up from the town is steep, exposed and unpaved. Normally, guests are taken by the hotel’s shuttle up to the steep mountainside. I declined their offer to provide the same service, explaining that I think Serena and I would be just fine. If we made it from Denver to Peru, I think we can handle a bit of a steep, treacherous drive. (Continued 👇)

Day 4:13 Huanchaco to Chacas - Part 1 Best day of riding ever on this trip since leaving Littleton, Colorado last April. Remember yesterday’s ‘Rule of Thirds’? Well, yesterday’s hard was being paid back in ecstatic spades. This is adventure riding! Well, I was handed the biggest dose of amazing ever! Off-roading, combination gravel roads, water crossings, sand, talc, river crossing, danger, #blissriding, twisties, surprises, beauty, flowers, waterfalls, cliff-side tunnels… what more could you want? We started out early leaving the beach before the heat of the day, excited to head into the high Andes. Plugging into Google Maps (offline), I started eastbound following a huge river valley. The pavement ended and I was directed along a gravel/dir road for about 45 miles on the west side of the river. I found it a bit strange there was little to no opposing traffic. But hey, I’m kind of in the middle of nowhere and roadworkers making repairs where the only people about. After about an hour, I notice cars traveling a paved road on the other side of the river. A fording was unlikely given the depth, width and flow rate of the river. There must be a bridge up ahead somewhere to get over there. (Continued 👇 👇)

Day 4:12 - Las Pocitas to Huanchaco. Littering and racists. Longest planned day of riding this trip. About 400 miles in the saddle. I knew this section of Peru doesn’t have much to offer. Northwestern Peru = (Western Arizona + Southern Baja)/2 + loads of trash. The austere desert landscape marred by complete disregard for Pachamama. Hundreds of miles on arrow straight roads for hours. I had to use my spare gas can from @Rotopaxofficial the distances between any human development were that far… literally hundreds of miles apart. As I notice myself judging these unknown people for being wrong or stupid or careless for littering; I’m like, “Whoa, Scott!” Who are you to judge them? Again, I catch myself viewing people thru the lens of my middle-class, American, GenX upbringing. I still remember the anti-littering campaigns on TV as a child, “Give a hoot. Don’t pollute” and “Keep America Beautiful” with the crying Native American. It wasn’t but a couple generations ago, discarding trash out of car windows along America’s highways was commonplace. There’s generations of people here in Peru who know no different. What was likely commonplace to discard biodegradable or natural trash trail/roadside; has become an environmental disaster because plastics don’t just rot away in a season or two. Day 4:12 - Cuenca, Ecuador to Mancora, Peru After sleeping like the dead, I got up early knowing that I had a big day of riding ahead of me. Examining the damage to Serena more closely, reveals it only to be cosmetic. Same turn signal busted again. Windshield destroyed, but still held on my those trusty washers from @diwancoffee John. Thank God for those washers otherwise I would have likely been without any windscreen. #flowstate. The worst was the right fairing busted apart. Also both Honda badges popped off the sides. All told, I recovered the two Honda badges, the broken fairing piece and the bottom piece of the windscreen. Little bit more duct tape and a couple zip ties, some silicone adhesive later… and she’s back together again. I little rough for wear, but Serena never wanted to be one of those garage queens that only make Starbucks runs. She likes it rough and dirty. Every time I get her washed, she just seeks out the mud, grime and dirt. So we leave the beautiful city of Cuenca and head southward thru Las Cajas National Park. It was stunning. Amazing roads, rocky outcroppings covered in lush high alpine greenery. Lakes, streams and waterfalls. Truly otherworldly. It reminded me of a cross between Rocky Mountain National Park and Taylor Park, Colorado. There was even a proper entry fee to pay and access the roadway. You’re going to have to take my word for it. Today I was tired and didn’t feel like stopping for pics much. Coming out of the southern exit of the park, we enter back into a total cloud bank. Heavy fog, paved roads, but now with traffic in both directions. Twisty high mountain switchbacks and random boulders and landslides onto the roadway shutting down one or both lanes. It was quite apocalyptic and I was having flashbacks to the the previous day. My weary nervous system on edge. Can’t go very fast because random boulders the size of file cabinets are just randomly in the roadway around blind corners. Or I’m dodging opposing flow vehicles which themselves are dodging huge potholes or dirt or logs or landslides. It was surreal and far more stressful than the day prior. (Continued in comments ⬇️)

4:11 - Baños to Cuenca. MUD and Shepherds After a blast canyoneering in the morning, I was looking forward to an easy, smooth ride to Cuenca. A couple hours of smooth cruising on the Ecuadorian section of the PanAmerican highway later, I was rerouted due to a huge landslide which shut the highway down. No problem. Google maps redirected me along with dozens of others thru an alternate route which bypassed the blockade. Plus Serena’s is always up for a bit of adventure especially after a rest day. The suggested route took us high up into the mountains and over around the unknown slide damage. As we gained altitude, the sunny day, turned to rain and then total soup as we entered the clouds. I wasn’t riding in fog as much as we were literally inside rain clouds. The comfort of the PanAmerican gave way to a complete mess. What started out as twisty mountain pavement, soon turn to huge potholes to be avoided to prevent blowing a tire or bending a rim. Then it got worse. The pavement ended and there were many indigenous shepherds moving their flocks. Barely able to see, we had to dodge snapping sheepdogs alarming and chasing me… doing their job of protecting. The slippery, wet gravel road in the downpour and challenged my riding ability already on top of not being able to see more than 30 yards beyond my windscreen. My helmet visor was useless as it gathered rain and fogged up. With the visor open and rain hitting my face directly, I had no choice but to proceed. Stopping at elevation in a relatively unpopulated area seemed unwise. (Continued in comments ⬇️)

Day 4:5 - Pitalito to La Cocha/Pasto ~ Trampolín del Diablo!! Today was a big day of riding. Leaving Pitalito early, I knew there were many challenging miles ahead. Knowing I was likely to encounter heavy rain on this stage of my journey to Patagonia, I packed my good rain gear. And today I needed it. The Devil’s Trampoline ranges from 2,000’ elevation to over 9,000’ as it passes over over the mountains separating Mocoa and Pasto. It is Colomobia’s most dangerous road. It is a single lane gravel road carved out of near vertical cliff sides. One wrong twist of the throttle or lapse of focus (like I had just the day prior) means certain death. No exaggeration here. Leaving the road here means falling thousands of feet. I chose to travel the road on a Sunday to avoid as much traffic as possible. Often opposing flows of large commercial vehicle create log jams for hours on end. So the traffic wasn’t bad and there were definitely plenty of spots where the road was too narrow for a car and a motorcycle to pass one another. And I happened to be doing it in a torrential downpour. I might have been a bit grateful for fog, clouds and rain as I was unable to see the breath-taking views. It was thrilling nonetheless. There plenty of spots where I was looking over the crumbled edge of a cliff into a white, pillowy abyss directly below. It also included the most dangerous water crossing I’ve done. While the video doesn’t capture it well, there’s a cliff to the right of the crossing. The water was rushing fast and hard. The underlying surface was uneven and full of rocks. Some unmarked places the water was almost two feet deep. Deciding I better watch a few vehicles cross first to scope the route, and ask some folks to standby to help just in case, I paused nearly 20mins contemplating this crossing. Thankfully I got across just fine. Serena and I avoided getting washed over the side of the fall. (Continued in comments)

4:3 - Tatacoa to Popayan - Adventure Riding and party in my mouth. Today was glorious day of riding. Perhaps the best riding I’ve done in almost a year. The combination of mountains, rivers, pavement and dirt roads leading from the low altitude of the desert up to the mountain town of Popayan creates for an amazing ride. Nearly 50% of this ride was on dirt roads… my kind of riding. Viva Colombia! Once there, it’s moniker of the “white city” was on full display as I walked the streets of this colonial town. The rather simple architecture whitewashed. The famous clock tower curiously marked with a “IIII” rather than “IV”. After getting a room in an old monastery, turned university, now hotel and fine restaurant, I walked the streets of this wonderful town. The square bustling with people congregating. Along the perimeter, vendors pawned their food and treasures. A dance school hosting public dancing in the square, welcoming random people to join in traditional patterned dance of the region. After wandering in wider spirals around the square, I find my destination a few blocks away… La Fresa Cafetería. This hole-in-the-wall narrow eatery is known for it’s empanadas pipián. Who would have known after walking in to see half a dozen plastic white patio tables with matching chairs and an easy-to-miss sign out front, this place serves one of the best things I’ve ever put in my mouth. Little tiny empanadas, filled with a mixture of herbs and potato, served with a surprisingly spicy, peanut, pumpkin seed sauce… the standard order is 10 of these little morsels. After devouring the first batch, I ordered 10 more to go. Serious yum. I would go back just for them. (Continued in caption ⬇️)

Day 4:1 - Bogota: Reunited. It’s been a long 4 months since I was last with my beloved Serena. Admittedly, the time away has been challenging. Not so much from returning to the ‘Matrix’, but lots has transpired personally. After moving thru a few meaningful, high-quality romantic connections, I learned so much more about the quality of relationship I’m seeking as well as the partner characteristics which resonate deeply with my being. I also came to realize this time in my life remains not one for partnership. It’s not that ‘I’m not ready’ or ‘healed enough’. (Are we really ever ready for the crucible that deep connection brings?) I realized this season of life is such a rich deepening of my connection to myself… oh yeah, and I’m on the adventure of a lifetime pulling me away from home-base nearly 4 months this year alone. My life is vibrant and very full of quality friendships, exploration of new hobbies, and overall this leaves little time and energy to invest in romantic connection(s). Furthermore, my oldest son struggled mightily thru a move and a breakup. I found myself deep in care-taking mode for a child struggling thru lifelong, significant mental illness. My resourcing was stretched to the absolute limits and I found myself in a period of low-grade depression; something not experienced by me for many years. I found solace in many dear friends, new and old, along with attending a support group for families of loved-ones with mental illness. I found my footing once again as I allowed myself space to resource and rest. Admittedly, this was a stretch for me. (Continued below in comments)

Lean in is a bit slower, but new tires always feel unusual until they have some wear or you get reacquainted with them. I went from a 100/90 to a 110/80 so there would be a slight difference there.
