Follow: @senthilkmr.nec .. 🕉️ Kapaleeshwarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to lord Shiva located in Mylapore, Chennai in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The form of Shiva's consort Parvathi worshipped at this temple is called Karpagambal is from Tamil ("Goddess of the Wish-Yielding Tree"). The temple was built around the 7th century CE and is an example of Dravidan Architecture. 🕉️ According to the Puranas, Shakthiworshipped Shiva in the form of a peacock, giving the vernacular name Mylai (Mayilāi) to the area that developed around the temple – mayil is Tamil for "peacock".Shiva is worshiped as Kapaleeswarar, and is represented by the Lingam. His consort Parvathiis depicted as Karpagambal. The Annual Myalpore Festival is held every year in Mylapore showcasing traditional dance, music, traditional games and many other activities that were a part of our culture and tradition since many many years. This also the time that Heritage House walks and Food walks are arranged to let people know about the heritage houses in and around Mylaore which may not be known to many. It was in the Food walk that I visited a small shop that has been selling pea nuts and jaggery for more than 60 years with the decor being the same as before. The Kolam competition is the icing on the calke of this festival where many ladies and at times gents participate to draw kolams of elaborate design. I also got to attend two very interesting talks, one on the culture and cuisine of the thanjavur-maharashtrian community, and one about the heritage sites along the banks of the coovum.
