Against this backlighting, it’s easy to see why some of the Nannostomus beckfordi are var. “Red”. Sourced from @aquaticarts a few years ago. We’ve had at least one spawning incident in this tank where fry survived: we found a juvenile in the AIO overflow surviving on detritus and whatever else made its way past the overflow. Do any of your non aquarium hobbyist friends ever give you a raised eyebrow 🤨 or weird look when you tell them how much you pay for literal sticks and stones? (Let’s not even talk about shipping…) or is it just me? 😅🤓 I’ve been on the hunt for really small, but also very branchy and chaotic looking driftwood for future scapes, but in particular for the upcoming botanical method setup @dyslexicdimepiece has planned for the @fluvalaquatics Flex 15 we won at @aquashella Daytona 2023 this past fall. I found a store on @etsy selling various options of Northern California Manzanita wood at really awesome prices (and they were also on sale as well!), so I ordered two sets of small to medium sized branches, and an assortment of several hundred smaller, nano-sized sticks and twigs. As with stones, I’ve found having an ample supply of various shapes and sizes to choose between and to utilize together aids in the creative process for me. In particular, having the right size tool for the job is also important. Larger pieces of driftwood are all too easy for us to source both locally at our local fish stores, from our preferred online aquascaping retailers, as well as from the many regional aquatics and reptile shows we attend annually; but I’ve found finding large quantities of smaller pieces that don’t cost a small fortune can be difficult to source. Being resourceful as a hobbyist is one of my favorite aspects of the hobby. I really felt like I crossed the line from hobbyist to enthusiast when I started importing aquarium products from Asia via AliExpress years ago. I was attempting to count how many of these fish were in the tiny tank they were kept in on the nano wall at our preferred LFS, @sandyspetshop; when I saw one of the fish tucked into a corner of the tank - near the surface, hidden between some floating plants and nearly 90° vertical like you see here in this photo. When my wife walked up while I was counting, I said “I think this one’s dead or almost dead…” and then it slowly leveled out to a horizontal plane. Already knowing the nature of this particular species, and their particular swimming habits, even I was surprised to find just how exactly straight up and down 90° these fish would linger in the water column. It’s also exactly why I fell in love with and became so enamored with these fish, even without having kept them myself previously. I keep finding them in the shadows just outside the areas illuminated by the spotlight on this aquarium, tucked in between twigs and detritus; or pressed close to the larger pieces of driftwood, hugging the curve and shape of a branch. My dream/holy grail fish! Nannostomus eques or the diptail, brown or hockey stick pencilfish. Scott with @tanninaquatics turned me on to pencilfish through his podcast/blog ‘The Tint’, and later personally suggested them when I was field stocking suggestions for our botanical method aquarium. These particular species were the ones he mentioned fondly, and exhibit its habit of swimming and posturing at a ‘snout-up’ angle—one of two Nannostomus species to do so, the other being Nannostomus unifasciatusmore. They exhibit this behavior moreso than other pencilfish species I’ve encountered, and something that attracted me to this species - between their swimming angle, and full brown coloration; they camouflage in nicely both vertically and laterally with twigs and branches and along detritus. I’ve only seen this fish for sale in person twice previously, and both times for one reason or another we weren’t ready to take them home at that time, so I sadly had to pass on them and wait. I had been holding out that our preferred LFS, @sandyspetshop would have them again, and they’re the specific species I go in there looking for, for months now. Well, fortune shined upon us, and they finally had them in stock again, and we were ready to add them to the botanical method aquarium - so I bought all they had (5 for $30). I was really bummed that one of my pencil fish decided to jump out of the tank the day after my baby rainbow fish jumped. Took me a few days before I felt like posting again. After observing them for a bit today, I am pretty sure it was because it was getting bullied. The tank boss pencil fish keeps going around harassing the others. No fin damage so far, seems like the others just run away. They made it home! I just added them to the tank. Two #dicrossusfilamentosus aka #checkerboardcichlid and four #nannostomuseques aka #brownpencilfish or #hockeystickeypencilfish I am pretty excited as I have wanted both of these species for a long time.
