We caught up with Melissa Barringer as she was stepping off the podium as the new HOA Lady Champion at the 2023 World Skeet Championships and asked about one of her biggest struggles as she was rising to the top of her game. “Last year I had a very rough season,” she told us. “So this year I told myself I wanted to have fun in this sport again. I feel like I…not necessarily considered it a job last year, but I definitely felt it was more like work, and this year I told myself, ‘I want to have a good season, I want to do this for me, not for anyone else,’ so going into the season, I feel like that’s what I did. Over the weekend the 2023 Ontario Open Skeet Championships was held at @oshawaclayandtargetclub The weather was not normal for this time of year, it was cold which made the rain tough to manage (considering I and most others packed summer clothes for the tournament). The club, it’s volunteers, referees and my colleagues on the OSSA board worked tirelessly to hold a great tournament and the Saturday night corn boil/ potluck was a huge success. I’m certain everyone had a great time. From the competition side of things I managed a big personal best. I feel lucky and humbled by the support I felt throughout this shoot. After a rough doubles event on Friday scoring only 91/100, I put my head down and went to work over the weekend. I finished as 12 gauge, 20 gauge, 410 and High Overall Champion. Oh and most importantly Ottawa won the club championship with a combined score of 495/500 in the 12 gauge event. I was able to tough it out in the severe heat and high winds and fortunate enough to take home HOA RU with a 398/400, and HAA 3rd with a 496/500. I know I’m a little late on this post but wow what a weekend the 2022 Kolar U.S. Open was! 14 different participating clubs with all different weather conditions and everyone showed out! I really enjoyed watching some of the junior shooters kick butt (and they sure can do that ☺️)! With rain, humidity, and heat I shot a 386/400 (with two 99s 😅) and a 481/500 w/doubles. Last week I got the opportunity to go to the NSSA state tournament! It was an amazing experience, and I shot someone the best scores I’ve ever had!
