On what is now a grassy field at 6th and Ann Streets once stood the Grund Hotel. Built by George Grund in 1907, it was the premier spot for out-of-town visitors during the first part of the 20th century. Grund, who had emigrated to KCK from Germany in 1855, made his fortune in real estate and wanted to give back to the community with a grand hotel. The Grund was elaborately decorated and had every modern convenience, including a telephone and bath in most of its 65 rooms. The elaborate dining room was 30 by 48 feet, with a marble stairway from the lobby. After the construction of the Town House Hotel and the increasing popularity of motels, the Grund declined in the 1950s and was eventually razed on October 29, 1969. Aquí una fotografía que está enganchada en mis pensamientos desde hace tiempo. Admiro esa capacidad de interpretar el mundo a través de la geometría y el orden matemático que tienen quienes lo observan y lo representan con maestría a través de la fotografía. El blanco y negro nos conduce al pasado, a ese halo de nostalgia que tienen las grandes ciudades cuando sus tiendas y su mobiliario urbano va quedando caduco para una sociedad a la que se le impone una transformación constante, pero que resiste en pie a esa imposición de lo moderno, aunque en su tiempo también lo quiso ser. Me detengo en la moda de la época, en la sofisticación del paseo de los bonaerenses saliendo a mirar y ser objeto de miradas, la búsqueda de artículos de moda que sumaran a esa elegancia en su próxima salida. La detención instantánea de sus desplazamientos gracias a la cámara, que provoca una fortuita confabulación geométrica es digno eco visual de la narrativa cortaziana. Y, cómo no, los automóviles último modelo de hace casi cien años, que circulaban orgullosos por sus calles luciendo un brillo especular en la piel metálica, que invita a querer mirar el mundo reflejado en ella. “Tiendas argentinas”, es el anuncio del local donde se venden aquellos artículos y prendas con los que se soñaba hace largas décadas y que se añoran hoy por el esplendor de un pasado perdido. Situada entonces en la esquina de la Diagonal Norte y Suipacha, e inmortalizada en 1936, es una invitación a un viaje al pasado, por parte de un maestro de la cámara como es Horacio Coppola. Optical fibers come in two types - Single-mode fiber These fibers have small cores about 3.5 × 10-4 inches or 9 microns in diameter and transmit infrared laser light; wavelength = 1,300 to 1,550 nanometers. In a single-mode fiber, all signals travel straight down the middle without bouncing off the edges. Cable TV, Internet, and telephone signals are generally carried by single-mode fibers, wrapped together into a huge bundle. Cables like this can send information over 60 miles. Multi-mode fiber These fibers have larger cores about 2.5 × 10-3 inches or 62.5 microns in diameter and transmit infrared light wavelength = 850 to 1,300 nm from light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Each optical fiber in a multi-mode cable is about 10 times bigger than one in a single-mode cable. This means light beams can travel through the core with a variety of different paths. Multi-mode cables can send information only over relatively short distances and are used to link computer networks together. Bell Labs has done it again!!!!
