Spotlight case: Peaches Peaches sustained a wire wound to her right hind limb, and was admitted to the Rangiora Vet Centre Equine Hospital early in January. The wound was deep to the bone, and cut through both extensor tendons and her superficial digital flexor tendon. She was referred to us for wound assessment and treatment. Due to the extent of the injury her care required surgical debridement and partial repair, long term casting, medication and hospitalisation. Despite her injuries Peaches is expected to make a good recovery. 🥰 This week, after 4 weeks at the RVC Equine Hospital, she was discharged complete with a going home party 🥳. Our equine team loved having her to stay and as you can see, she became quite the hair model! 🐴 We wish Peaches all the best ❤ for her continued recovery and look forward to regular updates from her dedicated owners. #rangioravetcentre #rvcequine #bestpracticehospital #equinesurgery🐴 #nzva #waimakariri #northcanterbury

As many will be around the BBQ celebrating with family and friends this evening, it's time to remind everyone of the case from earlier in the year of Rusty and the kebab stick 🍡🍢 🔴 Please keep a close eye on your pets! 👀 Rusty’s case was challenging. He presented with vague signs consistent with Gastroenteritis; a combination of vomiting, inappetence and soft stools. Shortly after these first signs he was lethargic, dull and had a reduced appetite, he was also starting to show signs of lameness and a reluctance to jump, and expressed discomfort when being picked up. Following this brief period he was 95% normal and tests confirmed he had improved. He remained good for a number of weeks, then deteriorated again. The owners consented to a CT to explore for a foreign body, although previous x-rays had not identified anything. The CT findings were remarkable! A 14cm kebab stick was found extending from his lung, adjacent to the ribcage and into the liver. The last time the family had kebabs, and Rusty was present, was weeks and weeks earlier at a family gathering. Unbeknown to anyone, Rusty had nabbed a tasty kebab stick from an unattended plate or potentially the rubbish. Surgery was required to remove the stick which presented many risks, a careful plan was made to extract the kebab stick, the team consisted of 2 veterinary surgeons, 2 nurses and a support crew. Thankfully it was a top quality kebab stick, with a smooth splinter-free surface. Once the kebab stick was removed, he was then transferred to ICU for intensive medical care. Amazingly, to everyone’s delight, Rusty made a rapid recovery and only spent 72 hours in hospital post-surgery before being discharged eating, drinking, and toileting well. By this stage, Rusty had developed a dislike for tablets, so a feeding tube was left in for two weeks and he was medicated this way. A follow-up CT a month later showed signs of a great recovery and the owners report that Rusty was at that time, and still is, 100% Rusty! #rangioravetcentre #NZVA #bestpracticehospital #waimakarri #northcanterbury #summer

Just like people, all pets can have allergic reactions to bites and stings. Although the risk of bee stings is present year-round, spring and summer bees are more active. If your pet has been stung, you might see bumps, swelling of the skin (like Mila pictured), itchiness, and in severe cases vomiting or drowsiness. In cases where your pet is showing signs of distress from a sting, they really need to be checked out by the vet as soon as possible. WARNING - BARLEY GRASS If you've been out and about in grassed areas today, please check your pet thoroughly for barley grass and foxtail awns. They can stick to fur and can pass easily through the skin. ‼️ Because of the orientation of the minute barbs on the bristles, the awns can travel relatively quickly through the body ‼️ The best thing to do is to avoid it altogether. If you can’t, thoroughly examine your pet regularly, check coats, around foot pads and ears, clip fur as short as possible, brush and trim these areas frequently. 🔸 Pay attention to your pets’ behaviour: 🔸 Watch for shaking of the head 🔸 Investigate excess licking 🔸 Check for any abnormal holes and swellings 🔸 Keep an eye out for secretions or draining tracts. Swimming is a great activity for your dog especially on hot summer days like today 🌞 Please be aware, if water in the ear doesn’t come out, it can lead to ear infections. If your pet has been swimming, watch for extra head shaking or scratching at the ear. If you suspect your dog has developed an ear infection, visit your vet. Toxic algae found in waterways across the country are dangerous if your pet ingests it. Keep an eye out for algae in the water – if you are in doubt about the algae in your local water way keep your pet out. Symptoms of cyanotoxin poisoning in dogs include: 🔸 Panting 🔸 Lethargy 🔸 Muscle tremors 🔸 Twitching 🔸 Convulsions If your dog is showing these symptoms after being in contact with a waterway, contact us immediately. We're really saddened to report that in the last 24 hours alone we have had 1 cat, 1 puppy and 1 adult dog dropped into our Rangiora clinic because they have been found without their humans 😢 Although all of these lovely pets have microchips - the microchips are NOT REGISTERED - so we cannot help them find their way back home 💔 ℹ FACT: A scan of a microchip gives only a number – nothing else. All the places where lost pets usually end up, the SPCA, shelters, or our vet clinics, are equipped with scanners to detect microchips. If your pet’s microchip details have not been registered with NZCAR – there is no way of knowing this is your pet, and making contact with you. ℹ FACT: Registration with NZCAR is a one time thing, a one off $15 charge – details need to be kept current, and can be updated at any time, when you move or change phone numbers, or ownership/rehoming takes place. ℹ FACT: Annual local Council registration is UNRELATED to NZCAR. If a dog is wearing their council registration tags, owners can be found via this. ℹ FACT: Not all vets automatically register microchips with NZCAR. Most vets have pricing options, for microchipping and NZCAR registration or just microchipping without NZCAR registration. There is a fee for NZCAR registration, whether you do it yourself, or if your vet does it. ✅ If you are unsure about your pets microchip and NZCAR registration, bring your pet in for a free chip check with a nurse (mon – fri 9am-5pm). Rusty: the case of the missing kebab stick 🍡🍢 As we enter the warmer months, and the beginning of gatherings and family BBQ’s our team is reminded of a case earlier in the year of Rusty. Rusty’s case was challenging. He presented with vague signs consistent with Gastroenteritis; a combination of vomiting, inappetence and soft stools. Shortly after these first signs he was lethargic, dull and had a reduced appetite, he was also starting to show signs of lameness and a reluctance to jump, and expressed discomfort when being picked up. Following this brief period he was 95% normal and tests confirmed he had improved. He remained good for a number of weeks, then deteriorated again. The owners consented to a CT to explore for a foreign body, although previous x-rays had not identified anything. The CT findings were remarkable! A 14cm kebab stick was found extending from his lung, adjacent to the ribcage and into the liver. The last time the family had kebabs, and Rusty was present, was weeks and weeks earlier at a family gathering. Unbeknown to anyone, Rusty had nabbed a tasty kebab stick from an unattended plate or potentially the rubbish. Surgery was required to remove the stick which presented many risks, a careful plan was made to extract the kebab stick, the team consisted of 2 veterinary surgeons, 2 nurses and a support crew. Thankfully it was a top quality kebab stick, with a smooth splinter-free surface. Once the kebab stick was removed, he was then transferred to ICU for intensive medical care. Amazingly, to everyone’s delight, Rusty made a rapid recovery and only spent 72 hours in hospital post-surgery before being discharged eating, drinking, and toileting well. By this stage, Rusty had developed a dislike for tablets, so a feeding tube was left in for two weeks and he was medicated this way. A follow-up CT a month later showed signs of a great recovery and the owners report that Rusty was at that time, and still is, 100% Rusty! #rangioravetcentre #NZVA #bestpracticehospital #waimakarri #northcanterbury #summer

Do You Batch? Running a business can be mentally exhausting. That's why as business owners, we have to manage our time and resources. Over the years I have learned to keep myself on track by batching tasks. So basically, we batch similar tasks or activities for the day or week to make the most of our time. When we do batching, we allow ourselves to focus on a specific task that we need to finish on a specific day or time. Batching is a key to getting high-quality outputs without running out of "flow" in your business. For example, we need to get a clients social media done for November. In an ideal world, we have all the bits we need from them, and can get straight into it. We spend time creating the copy and the content for them for all of November. It gets sent off to be approved (in some cases, some clients we go straight on to scheduling) Once approved, we go back and schedule the entire month in one go. It's done in batches. When I really have my creative flow going, I could sit here and write, format and schedule multiple blogs or articles for a couple of months out. Batching. I have a client who knows when all of her Facebook Lives will go out for the year, so we create all of the Facebook Events and reminder emails at once, and they all go out at the right time, and it's done. FOR THE WHOLE YEAR. Batching! Get the idea? It creates so much more time when you are able to do big chunks of similar tasks all at once, giving you more mental space to work on the next task.
