This week I had the pleasure of exploring the passion of the @azglovelab! Chris Petroff invited me to his shop to help him craft some photos that will help show the world what he does. Featured in this months @sportsillustrated magazine, The Glove Lab has already been thrust into the spot light! In short, he brings gloves back to life. But it’s so much more than that… he can take a glove and, like he’s speaking to its soul, tell you if it was broken in properly, how you catch the ball, if the pitcher is using and tricks to make the ball stickier… a glove lives a brutal life and leaves behind the story which Chris has mastered the language of. Then he tears it down to refresh and renew the laces, the leather, the glue that binds it all together and even rebuilds degraded parts of gloves. We spent a couple of hours exploring the people, the process, the shop and the tools of his craft and it’s one of the most authentic executions of a pursuit I’ve seen in a long time. During the tour of his shop he shared his humble beginnings and it’s my hope you can see and, more so, feel the dedication he’s given to what he loves! The working name for our new creative community interest company is Creative Rural Art Workshops, aka CRAW The plan is to provide affordable art workshops both at our base studio workshop in Newton Stewart and out and about across the region. Dumfries and Galloway is a very big region in Scotland and the population is quite scattered into little pockets hither and thither. Except for the larger towns like Dumfries and Stranraer, most people live in a rural area which can create issues with isolation, loneliness and lack of employment opportunities. Our aim is to not only bring exciting art workshops to the area but also to provide a safe space where people can come together, connect and create.
