For example, you can make an oath to a certain spirit you work with, to a place or a certain action or intention. The ancient custom of taking oaths has translated over the years into the 'new year's resolutions' that some people come up with around January 1st. But if you ask a while later if people are living up to their good intentions, you are often told that they have already been forgotten. When you take an oath you enter into a magical bond and agreement. Within an oath you make one or more promises and record these in a ritual by saying the oaths out loud. There should also be something given in return for the oaths. So for every promise you magically record, you ask a counter question from the spirit(s), place or person involved. A gift for a gift is a basic rule that we see reflected within Sittan in various ways. This also includes giving offerings, for example. But an oath goes one step further. An oath requires a predetermined period of commitment. The clear frameworks associated with the oath almost always lead to personal growth. Just not always in the way you expect. You can take oaths on a small scale or on a large scale. In that case, you involve several witnesses in your oath. Just like at a wedding. Within the Sittan tradition it is customary to think about oathing during the last days of the year. It is absolutely not an obligation, and it can also be quite a burden to be bound by an oath from time to time. That is why you should think about it carefully and prepare an oath well. Here's a ring given to me by my teacher and friend, Marget before she died . I have one the same that she had made for me and maybe one day I'II pass it on to my magickal heir too. As well as decoration or signs of wealth, rings have been used to swear oaths and as signs of promises and agreements for thousands of years. Religious leaders, monarchs, partners and friends have all used the symbol of the ring to acknowledge a bond, authority, lineage and trust. The circular nature of a ring can symbolise continuity and fidelity or binding and containment. This can be seen in the tradition of wedding rings, friendship rings and rings which signify belonging to societies or groups. A ring could be something that was used in the place of a signature when many people could not write or read. The individual nature of the image on a signet ring would ensure the authenticity of the document. My partner and I each have a ring with a runic inscription about love struck into the metal. Runic rings are found in many parts of the world where the Germanic tribes settled. Sometimes the inscription would be on the inside of the ring which implies a hidden and private meaning or magick intended only for the wearer. And obviously there's the Tolkien saga which I'm avoiding mentioning k @caledonianforge is making me a ring out of some silver from a bracelet that I got in a troubling time; I'm going to use it in some special magick related to transforming those memories. Throwback to an oathring I forged probably a year or so ago. This oathring is depicting Midgårdsormen or Jörmungand, which is the child of Loke, the mighty beast that lives in the world's seas and is so long that it could slither around the world and bite itself in the tail. In the end, Tor and Jörmungand will kill each other. Oathrings were probably used for swearing oaths between people and are described in the Icelandic sagas. A very old tradition in the North. This piece was sold and found a good home! . Throwback till en edsring som jag smidde för säkert ett år sedan. Denna edsring föreställer Midgårdsormen eller Jörmungand, barn till Loke, och är det mäktiga odjuret som lever i världshaven. Jörmungand är så lång att den kunde slingra sig runt hela midgård och bita sig själv i svansen. Till sist kommer Tor och Jörmungand att döda varandra. Edsringar användes troligen för att svära eder mellan människor och beskrivs i de isländska sagorna. En mycket gammal tradition i norr. Den här lilla ormen såldes och hittade ett fint hem!
