In ancient Celtic and Gallo-Roman religion, Cernunnos or Carnonos is a god depicted with antlers, seated cross-legged, and is associated with stags, horned serpents, dogs and bulls. He is usually shown holding or wearing a torc and sometimes holding a bag of coins (or grain) and a cornucopia. He is believed to have originally been a Proto-Celtic God. There are more than fifty depictions and inscriptions referring to him, mainly in the north-eastern region of Gaul. Cernunnos is also associated with the Wiccan Horned God in the modern religious tradition of Wicca, via the discredited Witch-cult hypothesis. Because of his horns. Yesterday was Beltane, the midpoint between spring and summer, and as such I took the time to reflect on the season behind me to make space for what’s ahead. 🌱 Spring cleaning of the soul. Here’s a brief summary of my spring: had an amazing camping getaway with my love, admired all the flowers that Florida spring has to offer, discovered mold in our condo, found my first shark’s tooth, was temporarily homeless, found a way better & bigger HOUSE to now call home, lost my main source of income here, went to Vegas as a bridesmaid (for the first time!) for a beloved, longtime friend’s wedding…. I realise it’s probably the first time I have smiled about her since her passing. I realised that is a huge step in my healing, in my grief. To be able to think of her in her quirky humanness. She was like a female wizard some days, she was weird and wise and wonderful. I always aspired to be more like her, she was my mentor in so many ways. Losing her so young left me feeling so afloat. Yet I know so deeply she guides me. She sits at the table of my ancestors, cheering me on. My message from her today is to be more playful, silly, quirky, weird and wonderful! To allow some of those child like qualities to be present and enjoy them! She always said never forget to play! A huge holy grove of relict trees on 13 hectares in the Caucasus, near Vladikavkaz. There is an old legend that one of the Kabardian princes (Kabarda is one of the peoples of the North Caucasus, these people are Muslims), Khetag, secretly converted from Islam to Orthodoxy, when his relatives found out about it, they began to persecute him. Trying to escape from them, he fled from Kabarda to Osetia, but they did not lag behind. Then Khetag ran into a small forest and prayed to God to save him. The forest closed around him and hid him from his pursuers, Khetag lived in this forest for a whole year, and then stayed to live in Osetia. You can't light a fire in this grove, break branches, or take anything at all. There are festive tables and donation boxes. The grove has many entrances on each side. In memory of the legendary event, tens of thousands of people gather here every second Sunday in July. Огромная святая роща реликтовых деревьев на 13 гектарах на Кавказе, недалеко от Владикавказа. Здесь стоят праздничные столы, урны для пожертвований. В роще есть много входов с каждой стороны. Last July, just shy of my 40th birthday, I received a diagnosis that has given me a new lens through which to view my life: ADHD. This revelation has been a major piece of my ongoing journey towards understanding myself better. For most of my life, I’ve identified as an atheist. Yet, over the years, I’ve felt an increasing pull towards something more, something beyond the tangible—a spiritual stirring within my heart. It’s a complex feeling, especially when you’ve valued the clarity and logic that science provides for so long. This journey isn’t about abandoning logic but about expanding my understanding of the world, both seen and unseen. I’m learning to navigate this new terrain, where logic meets the ineffable, and where I let myself explore the “invisible” forces without losing my grounding. This is my path of self-discovery—continuously evolving, sometimes challenging, but always enlightening.
