These women are sure to have you hootin’ & hollerin’ and dancing. 💃 “We have never played on the Outer Banks before and I am very much looking forward to this performance,” said The Storyweavers lyricist and singer Sheela Fortner. “As a gay woman, I want people to feel represented by our music and I want them to identify with us. Our band consists of seven members, the perfect blend of gay, straight, trans, a bandmate that is deaf, and an ASL interpreter – what we share is our love of music. Firsts are not always easy. Having recently moved to the area, I was at first oblivious and secondly quite surprised at the response from the community regarding the first area #pridefest . There’s no other way to say it, ya’ll…it was ugly. Threats of violence were made and my staff at the time were fearful. Coming from where I came from and pre- extra crazy politicians, it honestly didn’t occur to me that this event would cause an uproar. But as they say, progress isn’t made by adhering to the status quo~ so there we went, into the local unknown. I’m so proud of everyone who was willing to participate. To show up and be seen. I’m also proud of the folks who have continued to develop and grow this event throughout years. I like to think that our community as a whole has become more tolerant and inclusive in the time I’ve been here, and for that I’m proud of all of us.
