We challenged the Immigration Exemption with @the3million as it prevents migrants from challenging mistakes in data and immigration decisions. The Court of Appeal found the exception unlawful due to insufficient safeguards and considerations of the risk to migrants' rights. After a week in wonderful Madeira competing at my fourth European Para Championships, it’s time to dive into the next project. The only thing casting a shadow on this journey was not being able to travel with my loyal guide dog, Max, due to a recent policy change at British Airways. Despite Max and I having traveled with them many times previously, they have now found a way to exclude us and many others. Since February, only guide dogs registered with the International Guide Dog Federation or Assistance Dogs International are welcomed on board BA flights. Many, if not most, Scandinavian countries are not members of the IGDF, but to become a member, guide dog associations must meet certain requirements and, importantly, pay significant fees. Max is no less of a guide dog because our guide dog association chooses not to join the IGDF. British Airways seems to align with the IGDF, creating a scenario where exclusive rights are reserved for only registered guide dogs and their owners, resembling a situation where only passengers wearing Dr. Martens shoes are allowed to travel, necessitating everyone else to buy and wear the shoes regardless of fit. When raising the issue with British Airways, the response I received indicated that this policy will not change. Consequently, the airline no longer has to worry about providing an additional seat on their flights for me and Max in the future, which also applies to many other blind individuals hoping to travel and explore the world. I find this decision profoundly disappointing and alarming, as a company as significant as British Airways should prioritize human rights above such exclusivity. Regrettably, other airlines have begun following suit, creating insurmountable obstacles for blind and visually impaired individuals. Notably, Iceland is a member of the European Guide Dog Federation, yet this affiliation does not meet BA’s requirements. Dear readers, I implore you to help us share our story. MARY MANNING 'We kept going because of Nimrod' - Dunnes Stores Strike Workers 1984 - 1987. .. Karen Gearon, Liz Deasy, Michelle Gavin, Vonnie Munroe, Alma Russell, Tommy Davis, Sandra Griffin, Theresa Mooney, Cathryn O'Reilly, Brendan Barron. .. Speaking from a picket outside the Henry Street store in 1985, the strikers said their protest against apartheid had changed them all and made them more aware of not only the horrors in South Africa, but of other injustices across the world. .. ‘You have to imagine South Africa as a pint of Guinness – the vast majority of it is black and a tiny minority is white – and just like a freshly poured pint, the white sits firmly on top of the black.’ - Nimrod Sejake - .. The Strike lasted for two years and nine months. The Irish government eventually banned South African goods ( becoming the first country to do so in the western world) from being sold in Ireland and this ban remained in place until the end of the apartheid regime. .. After Nelson Mandela's release he came to Ireland in 1990 where he met & personally Thanked the Dunnes Stores Strikers.
