How many have ever visited an abandoned mansion? In the early 1980’s I visited The Otto H. Kahn mansion, Oheka at Cold Spring Harbor, New York when it was an abandoned ruin. Not a window left after numerous fires and vandalism. I often went there with a friend who had permission and we would wonder the freezing empty rooms that echoed with the crunch of fallen plaster, burnt wood, broken glass. Screeching birds lost in the attics and rats in the far reaches of the basement kept one jumping. I will always remember going once after a snowstorm and the once palatial rooms were filled with drifts of snow and icicles melting from the tops of the windows forming diamond like valances. Fortunately Oheka is one of those rare preservation success stories and has been restored and is one of Long Island’s most desirable venues for weddings and special occasions to celebrate.
