Sometimes my favorite things about trees are their structure. In fact, I look forward to the colder months when the leaves drop and all that’s left are the bones of the tree. That’s when I truly see them. I have taken countless photos of this trio of Persimmon trees…all after the leaves have fallen. They haven’t changed much through the years…staying the same size but some years they hold onto more persimmons than others. This year is one of those years. According to folklore believed to originate in the Ozarks, you can predict the coming winter weather by slicing a persimmon seed in half. If you see a spoon shape, there will be a lot of heavy, wet snow to scoop. A fork shape means light, powdery snow and a milder winter. Post Oak in my front yard, from October. I was out doing something in the dark and heard someone a-scrambling up into the tree. Naturally, instead of running away, I turned my cell camera flash on and tried to get some eye reflections. He didn't get me, but I couldn't really make a positive ID either, unless it was that raccoon/ squirrel from Ice Age (feel free to weigh in on what you think it is!). When the fateful day comes, I just hope to have the time and wherewithal to be able to rattle off the latin binomials of whatever creature has gotten the better of me before I breathe my last.
