Potentialla Simplex (common cinquefoil) is a low growing plant that spreads through runners. It may bloom March-August depending on location and is native to much of the eastern half of North America. Jack in the pulpit is a charming plant native to the eastern half of North America. It blooms any time from March-June depending on the location. It prefers moist part shade woodlands, though these were found in full sun on a wetland. It produces a clustered red berry which is enjoyed by wildlife. Fighting plants with plants!! 🔥 We have a serious monoculture of spotted knapweed. I've tried multiple methods to stump this invasive. I hate spraying and cutting flowers/ selective constant mowing is too much work as they just flower and flower and flower etc.... So the next method is using similarly aggressive native plants to outcompete but not necessarily eliminate the knapweed. Ive already planted lots of native rhizome spreading bunch grasses which are strong plants that can hold their ground. Enter northern evening primrose 🌼 It has been growing there for two seasons and this will be the third but I've noticed lots of nice basal rosettes that all self seeded. The plant is edible with really nice flowers and acts quite weedy which i want in this situation. Tiarella cordifolia ‘Oakleaf’ (Foamflower). Planted in the spring of 2023, this little dude has settled in nicely. Depending on genetics, Tiarella cordifolia can be more of a “clumper” or a “runner”. ‘Oakleaf’ is a selection of T. cordifolia var. collina, which makes it more of a clump-forming type. The racemes of tiny white flowers rise about 8” or so above the basal foliage. I’ve noticed mostly smaller pollinators attracted to the flowers. Growing in part shade and good soil at the edge of a bed, this plant would probably prefer just a part sun garden location. Foamflower likes well-drained soil that doesn’t ever get completely dry. Pink Pollen! Yes, you read that correctly- Claytonia virginica, or Spring beauty, is a native spring ephemeral that is lovely in large patches and has pink pollen. It is great for early pollinating bees. It spreads by underground tubers and seeds and disappears after the seeds have set in the spring. If it is located in lawn (see last photo) when it disappears there will not be large gaps of grass. The leaves are in pairs and basilar, grass-like and will grow up to 12". The spring beauty Mining 🐝 is a specialist bee that seeks out the flower. Monarch butterflies and their dependence on milkweed for survival provide a unique opportunity to evaluate various species and habitats for health. Blue as the Skies Above, Wild Irises, Mormon Lake and San Francisco Peaks Bloomed 6-18-2023 30x60 oil on canvas Adventurers have passed this view for centuries. Mormon lake is thirty miles south of Flagstaff along one of my favorite roadways in Arizona. It’s the largest natural lake in the state, and it’s about four miles wide by seven miles long when it’s full (but it’s rarely full). I first came here in the late 80’s to camp. Our neighbors had a beautiful black labrador who was involved in field trials at the lake, which were fun to watch, so we went along. I was still new to Arizona. I kept looking for the actual lake, but all I saw was marsh. Evidence of the lake was everywhere, though. There was a small town along the banks with a lodge and restaurant built originally in 1924 for loggers and ranchers. There were small cabins along what looked like the shore; but again, there was no water. There was also a road that circled the lake that we rode our bikes around, but no lake view. I planted wild geranium (geranium maculata) last year in my shady side garden, and I got my first flower today! The plants came from the @lebonature native plant sale and from @arcadianatives . They should spread if they’re happy and create a living mulch around the shrubs in that area (mountain laurel, viburnum, inkberry, beautyberry, and lowbush blueberries). Native plant communities look very different from our gardens when native megafauna are present. Many native plant advocates encourage leaving dead stems and not to fertilize, but look at this landscape. Aerial vegetation is nearly absent by spring and tons of manure (fertilizer) is present. Using a holistic view is key to creating robust native habitats. Cumberland Pagoda (Blephelia subnuda) has a rare presence in the southeast. Plants have been found in rocky limestone forests within the Cumberland Plateau region of northeastern Alabama and Tennessee. At 1-2 feet tall they flower in late spring and summer. Dense whorls of clustered flowers encircle the stems for about a month. Grown in part shade to dappled shade with good drainage. Too wet can cause root rot. And despite growing in shady conditions, it does not like too much leaf litter in winter. Be sure not to over mulch. Not much is known or written about this plant, so faunal associations are unknown. It is a G1/S2 species. Meaning that it is imperiled. The main cause cited is timber harvesting. [2 of 3 available, $35 each] “fox creek, tallgrass prairie preserve (I)” stone lithograph (ink on cream paper) 8 x 8 in. please dm me if you’re interested! ✨ LAST ONE!! my dad and i took a little weekend trip to the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve a couple weeks ago, which is where these little guys were collected from :) the Prairie is a part of the flint hills and it was really cool to go there and be able to see a different type of landscape. the park had also just done some controlled burns, i found the contrast of the charred ground and the green grass really beautiful — and it was really interesting to learn more about the importance of good fire. i also found a little shell fossil in limestone which was pretty neat, especially considering.. i printed this with a piece of limestone.. pretty crazy. anyway, please dm me if you’re interested in purchasing a print!
