Kind of sad to see how these things are treated in the salvage yards. When I first got to the yard, it looked like the first photo, everything was clean. I grabbed the hatch, hood, headlights and some other interior pieces. Went back yesterday for an A/C tension pulley and possibly the headliner board and windshield.. well, I got the pulley at least. Cool project completed and delivered for a long-time friend of TRP. This ‘85 Omni GLH Turbo came to us with major running issues all around. Almost all of them turned out to be electrical related. After fixing 20+ faulty crimps and soldered joints throughout the harness, rebuilding the cars charging harness and rewiring the car with a @fueltechusa ft450 we were able to finally get rid of all our electrical gremlins. After some shakedowns, we headed down to @efispecialties for a tune, where the Omni put down a safe and reliable 285/360 at 15psi before running out of injector. The owner is going to enjoy the car at this power level for now with plans to turn it up in the future. A few weeks back I dived into the history of the Dodge Omni..I did mention the GLH variant..Carroll Shelby was working with Chrysler during the 80s and made a few sleeper models based off existing Chrysler models at the time. One being the GLH Turbo. Based on a Dodge Omni the GLH offered a 2.2 L Turbo engine mated to a 5 speed manual transmission. The car blew people away at the time and made around 146 HP. The car was only made for 3 years of the Omnis run..from 1984-1986. Shelby GLHS Meno Carroll Shelby asi pozná každý človek, ktorý sa zaujíma o autá. Známe sú najmä jeho upravené Mustangy, ale aj AC Ace, do ktorého dal motor Ford V8 a vznikol tak AC Cobra, neskôr známy aj ako Shelby Cobra. Málokto ale vie, že v 80-tych rokoch upravil aj dosť bežný a nudný hatchback Dodge Omni GLH. Zvýšil výkon jeho štvorvalca 2,2 turbo zo sériových 148 na 175 koní a 270 Nm. Keďže sa jedná o predokolku, museli počítačom znížiť krivku krútiaceho momentu na 237 Nm kvôli životnosti prevodovky, poloosí atď. Prevodovka bola manuálna 5 stupňová a podvozok dostal od firmy Koni. Do interiéru sa nasťahoval športový volant a radiaca páka Momo. Zvonku nebolo auto nijak extravagantné a aj vďaka tomu si rýchlo vyslúžilo prezývku "sleeper". Oficiálne sa predávalo ako Shelby GLHS vo vybraných showroomoch Dodge v USA. Pridané písmeno "S" na konci malo odkazovať na Shelbyho. Fanúšikovia si ale tento názov prekladali po svojom a to takto: GLH mali znamenať "Going Like Hell" (ide pekelne), no a "S" na konci malo znamenať "S'more" (ešte viac). Auto bolo ozaj pekelne rýchle na svoju dobu. Stovku zvládlo za niečo vyše šesť a pol sekundy a maximálna rýchlosť bola 244km/h. 1/4 míle pokorilo za 14,8s. To sú lepšie údaje ako dosahovali vtedajšie domáce športiaky Camaro, Firebird či Mustang... Toto auto sa vyrábalo len od roku 1986 do 1987 a vznikla obmedzená séria 500 kusov.

The entire hot hatch genre of the 80s (it actually started in the 1970s) was much more of a European scene than an American one, and the USA got hardly any of the most iconic entries, no 205 GTis, R5 Turbos, or Uno Turbos. VW’s GTI didn’t arrive stateside until 1983 (Canadians got it from 1979). Once it did arrive, to the tune of “Der Kleine GTI,”, it ushered in many competitors, the most unlikely and extroverted of which was the Dodge Omni GLH. The Omni was the slower selling half of the L-body Omni/Plymouth Horizon duo; designed mainly by Simca/Chrysler Europe but reworked for America and introduced in early 1978. Although it had gotten a big-ish 2.2L engine in 1981 courtesy of its K-car brethren, it was a bare-bones economy car to most observers. Until Carroll Shelby got involved. The year was 1982 and Lee Iacocca, a close colleague and friend of Shelby’s since the “Ford Vs. Ferrari” era, asked Shelby to be a consultant and hot up Mopar’s tidal wave of front-drivers. The Pentastar people set up the Chrysler Shelby Performance Center in Santa Fe Springs, CA., and immediately trained their sights on the L-body, both the 5-door and the Scirocco-aping Omni O24 coupe. In 1984, his first two products were ready: the Shelby Charger (formerly O24), and the GLH; which in Shelby’s own words stood for “Goes like Hell.” The first GLH was visually subtle and only quietly advertised, but it was quick. Shelby’s reworked, high-comp, cammed 2.2 put 110 hp into the 2,100-lb. Omni, evenly matching it with the GTI. Subtle graphics, skirts, a chin spoiler, blackout trim, and fog lights were added, but the interior was stock middle-America Omni. ‘85 and ‘86 were far more exciting, with a turbo option added to the GLH, now packing 146hp and handily outpacing the GTI. The Turbo GLH could be a workout to drive with all that power on the front wheels and bore no relation to older Mopar performance cars, but there was no denying how fun it was. In 1986, Chrysler and Shelby fielded the Shelby-branded, intercooled GLH-S (“Goes like Hell some more”) with 175hp, before the hot Omni faded away in favor of updated Chrysler-Shelby performance products like the Dodge Shadow CSX.
