We had the chance to stop by the @iffottawa to see the featured 1983 movie “The Wars”. 🎥 The Wars is based on the Timothy Findley novel of the same name. Directed by Robin Phillips, the story follows Robert Ross, a young Canadian who enlists in the army during World War I to fight in Europe. Robert seems like the most unlikely candidate to become a soldier, as a sheltered upper-class kid with a negative reaction to violence. The turning point that leads to his enlistment is the death of his beloved sister. Throughout the movie, we follow Robert’s journey and his transformation through all the trials and tribulations he faces while fighting. In totality, the movie is a gritty and realistic look into the horrors of war. The backdrop of World War I only adds to this, as it was a much grittier and brutal form of combat than ever seen before. For its moving performances of the actors and heart-tugging story, we would recommend The Wars to anyone. Twelve Tales, an anthology feature film 📽️ set to be screened at the @mayfairtheatre on April 13, was created by Ben Bergeron and Colin Ziraldo over the course of one year. The two young filmmakers joined forces with a variety of other creatives—including actors, writers, guest directors, and technical crew—to create and collect one short film every month into an anthology. The films range from a variety of tones, genres, and styles, including science fiction, horror, comedy, and coming-of-age. In addition to being filmmakers, Bergeron and Ziraldo run a social enterprise called @hotshoepro, which is a film hub for youth that was started in 2020. Hot Shoe Productions hires youth to cultivate their skills while practicing video production. While they originally started with client work, such as producing event videos, they have moved toward production services, youth film festivals, and providing support for youth to make their own films. We were able to chat with the two filmmakers about their inspiration for Twelve Tales, what they learned from their experience, and what advice they would share with aspiring filmmakers. Meet Sonia! Sonia Bonspille Boileau is a bilingual Kanien’kehá:ka-Quebecois filmmaker who has been working for over fifteen years at bringing Indigenous content to the screen for audiences of all cultural backgrounds. She first started making documentaries to explore her bicultural heritage and understand the impacts of colonialism. On April 18th, Sonia will lead our next Night School lecture about the importance of Indigenous representation in the arts and media, narrative sovereignty and the power of storytelling to educate, share and heal. The lecture will take place at 6PM in the DARC Microcinema. A screening of Sonia's second dramatic feature, Rustic Oracle, will take place in the DARC Microcinema on April 17th for National Canadian Film Day. Shedding light on the lived realities of Indigenous peoples across the country, Rustic Oracle tells the story of an 8-year-old girl who sets about a journey with her mother to find her missing sister. Part(2/3) This was our second location where we shot the bar fight scene. We had our stunt coordinator @actorivanswan_official on set, and witnessing the process unfold as we had to get the choreography right, considering we had limited film stock, was fascinating. The entire crew killed it, especially @mikhail.laxton and @terrifictrilla , who took a beating while safely executing the stunts.
