Melvin Van Peebles (born Melvin Peebles; August 21, 1932 – September 21, 2021) was an American actor, filmmaker, writer, and composer. He worked as an active filmmaker into the 2000s. His feature film debut, The Story of a Three-Day Pass (1967), was based on his own French-language novel La Permission and was shot in France, as it was difficult for a black American director to get work at the time. The film won an award at the San Francisco International Film Festival which gained him the interest of Hollywood studios, leading to his American feature debut Watermelon Man, in 1970. Eschewing further overtures from Hollywood, he used the successes he had so far to bankroll his work as an independent filmmaker. In 1971, he released his best-known work, creating and starring in the film Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song, considered one of the earliest and best-regarded examples of the blaxploitation genre. He followed this up with the musical, Don't Play Us Cheap, based on his own stage play, and continued to make films, write novels and stage plays in English and in French through the next several decades; his final films include the French-language film Le Conte du ventre plein (2000) and the absurdist film Confessionsofa Ex-Doofus-ItchyFooted Mutha (2008). His son, filmmaker, and actor #mariovanpeebles appeared in several of his works and portrayed him in the 2003 biographical film Baadasssss!. Bloodied, Not Bowed Hello, folks. It is with some disappointment that I share the news that our Seed & Spark crowdsourcing campaign for Caleb Grandoit’s Don’t Matter to Us came up short. Woefully so, I must admit. In trying to deconstruct why, I found that it came down to the number of contributors, not the size of the pledges. The average amount per pledge was strikingly similar to our first venture, Gentle Boy, where we raised over $23,000 in four weeks. However, this time ‘round we got less than a fifth the number of people contributing. As per the rules of Seed & Spark, we needed to get to 80% of our goal. We didn’t, and so folks will not be charged the money they pledged. For those of you that did, we are incredibly grateful. Being there for us means everything. Was the subject matter too heavy for some? Perhaps. Was launching it in the middle of tax season poor timing? Dunno. No matter. We are regrouping. To that end, we’ve already found a new crowdsourcing platform where there is no 28-day deadline and whatever amount is pledged can be accessed when the time comes for principal photography to begin again in September. IBRA AKE ~ Multidisciplinary Artist Ibra Ake (@ibraake) is a Nigerian-American creative polymath whose work as a director, writer, artist, and creative director has positioned himself as a leading creative in the entertainment industry. Born in Washington D.C. and raised in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, Ake’s multicultural background shaped his avant-garde artistic perspective. Creatively, Ake began as a fashion and portrait photographer before stepping into film and television. A chance connection with fellow polymath Donald Glover sparked a longstanding collaborative partnership that launched Ake into working on acclaimed projects like the Emmy-winning FX series Atlanta, the film Guava Island, and Glover’s Amazon limited-series, Swarm. In addition to his work with Glover, Ake has made it a point to actively celebrate his Nigerian heritage while pushing creative boundaries, as seen in his 2021 H&M campaign starring John Boyega which features him speaking almost entirely in Yoruba.
