This week’s gorgeous smile belongs to Lucy 🌸 Lucy started her treatment with the orthodontic team in 2022 🦷 She had an increased overjet of 8mm. This is when the upper teeth appear too far in front of the lower teeth. One cause of an ‘overjet’ can be due to a jaw discrepancy when the lower jaw is positioned too far back 🔙 If it is caused by the lower jaw being positioned too far back then a growth modification brace, called a Twinblock can be fitted during the growth spurt. 💪🏼 This is a removable brace and is used to encourage forward growth of the lower jaw and ‘tip’ the top teeth back, resulting in overjet reduction and bite correction🙌🏻🎉👏🏻 After less than a year of excellent Twinblock wear, upper and lower fixed braces were fitted to correct the mild overcrowding🦷 What a fantastic result for such a lovely girl. The next day I tried to eat normal food and it went pretty okay. 😬 The next day I went to the orthodontist and they pulled on the canine again with an elastic thread. Hopefully the canine will come through quickly now! 🦷⛓️💥 Overall recovery went very well. My face wasn’t very swollen, so I could actually enjoy the beautiful weather at the beach Scheveningen. ☀️

Spring is here 🌸🌼🌺 Took a little break from blogging on this account. A lot of things happened and in the midst of chaos I just wanted some peace of mind! 😇 One month ago the orthodontist made a x-ray of my teeth again. Unfortunately there was no process with the canine that is stuck in my canine. I was super disappointed by this horrible news. For an entire they pulled on that teeth and it didn’t come through. I knew in my gut that something was wrong. So lucky me had to go back to the jaw surgeon for the fifth time. And I need to have surgery again. He thinks the canine is stuck in my bone. So they are trying to get it out! 🥲 Hopefully the canine will finally see they light of day! ✨

Mr Phong came through exactly 10 years ago, back in 2014. Complaints were his teeth protruding outward when he smiles. This is due to the increased horizontal angulation at the anterior teeth also known as overjet. As for this case, there was minimal crowding at the anteriors. We often hear people refer to overjet (top teeth sticking out far in front of bottom teeth) as overbite- and that’s OK- but we want to clear up the difference between the two. Overjet is the HORIZONTAL distance between the upper and lower front teeth. AKA “my front teeth stick out”. Ideally, upper teeth protrude no more than 2-3 mm from the lower. Overbite is the VERTICAL distance between the upper and lower teeth. Ideally, the top teeth cover approximately 20% of the lower teeth when biting down all the way. Why do we want to fix overjet? Top teeth that protrude too far out in front of bottom teeth can result in: -Trauma to the front teeth (the further they stick out, the easier it is to chip and break teeth) -Increased risk of periodontal disease -Speech difficulties -Bruxing (clenching and/or grinding) -Discomfort while chewing -TMJ issues -Sub-optimal breathing/lip incompetence -Oral dysfunction -Social/emotional impacts (bullying) How do we fix excess overjet? If we’re lucky enough to see a patient that’s still growing, we can do growth modification with orthodontic appliances such as expanders, braces, Invisalign, myofunctional and functional appliances. If a patient is finished growing (past puberty), treatment can be more difficult.
