Welcome to me being way too excited to show you this to get a proper photo. This work isn't as figurative as a lot of things I do, but still started with the same kind of contextualising continuous line. This was a highly intuitive practice where I've applied materials quickly from a palette and materials I had pre-prepped. Through her energetic gestural marks, she expresses elements of its wildness as well as where nature has been tamed. In this series of works, Boughey has employed her gestural mark making to express her feelings about the intensely personal and emotional experience of witnessing her close friend's death. “When my friend was diagnosed with terminal cancer she accessed the voluntary assisted dying program and asked me, along with three other close friends, to be present with her as she transitioned. It was peaceful and I was honoured to be present as she passed between life and death. The ultimate border. Following a period of inertia, I eventually began painting; trusting in process. I drew the body in repose and then subtly erased, obscured, layered using personal cues and references. For someone who doesn’t like deep water ( literally not a great swimmer! ) I know this feeling so well! Something I’ve had to learn on my art journey… is to push the fear aside, put myself out there, show my work, enter my work into those exhibitions I’ve only ever been a visitor at, tackle designing a website while feeling like I’m drowning in tech terms, learning new skills and trying new things, throwing open my studio doors to visitors… I just wish I had done all this earlier! #kickkickkick #21daysinmyartworld
I know I shouldn’t be playing favourites, but I do have a soft spot for ‘Maua’ ( flower in Swahili ) This collage was such a joy to create! I love the colours in this artwork, the combination of ‘painting’ the background with a silicone wedge, monoprinting on paper, mark making with oil pastels and then the endless play with cut out vase and flower shapes until it landed on this composition. #abstractcollage #sold * see ‘MUSE’ folder in highlights for Zanzibar inspiration *
